Memory Cache: The Lion King

Good Game: "It may not sound super hardcore, but when I was 9 years old, The Lion King movie tie-in game on Sega Mega Drive was awesome."

1994? Man.... That makes me feel so old LOL

Great video!

Everybody loves that game. So much fun.

The 16bit Disney games were usually some of the best games you could find at that time. I was always more of an Aladdin lad but I remember having my tiny mind blown by the stampede level, thinking games could never get any more technically advanced or closer to the experience of playing the movie.

10 Super NES Games You’ll Probably Never Beat

If you’re a gamer “of a certain age”, you may vaguely remember the moment when games went from a grueling gauntlet requiring all your skill and concentration to tackle to a casual, checkpoint-containing, cruise control-encouraging walk in the park.

I beat Jurassic Park multiple times!

Jurassic Park had no save system, so I would leave the console running while I went to school, took breaks. It's not that it's hard, it's just tedious. But I was a Jurassic Park obsessed kid (around 13 when this hit), so I would obsessively scower ever inch of the maps (both 2D and 3D) until I had them memorized.

The Star Wars trilogy, I only beat w the cheat codes.

Longie_long1241d ago

Sounds just like me. I mapped out the indoor areas on paper, leaving the SNES on for days at a time. But I never finished the game. I collected all the raptor eggs except one. So close !

Neonridr1241d ago

oh god, I remember beating JP on SNES and like you said, it was all in one shot.

I dunno about this list though, I beat all the Star Wars games and while some levels were tough, it was easy to get powerups and extra lives and stuff. Maybe set to the hardest settings it was tough. I also beat Contra 3, loved that game to death.

with the exception of Jurassic Park and Prince of Persia, I've beaten every other one of those. It just takes practice and time. Something I had way more of when I was younger.

The Lion King is still devastatingly hard, even as an adult

I’ve played the first three levels of The Lion King on Super Nintendo hundreds of times. And that’s not an exaggeration.

I picked up the two-pack of Aladdin and Lion King and just beat Lion King! I used the rewind probably 300 times. But what I thought was really cool was that once I got a level beaten, the next time I played it, it went more smoothly. It gets easier and easier, and now I can beat the first 3 levels almost without issue (the dang hippo tail collision detection notwithstanding).

It's a great little game, and it nails the entire presentation, music, graphics, sound effects. The gameplay is the weakest part (which is kind of a big deal), but it gets better once you play it enough that you basically enact Stockholm Syndrome on yourself.

I consider myself not a very good gamer, never was. But when i was kid i played this game and beat it anytime i want to. It wasn't a hard game i recall.

sagapo2311d ago

I agree, played it on megadrive at the time, don’t remember being that hard, finished it rather quickly. Great game tho!

Tross2311d ago

I never did own this as a kid (and only played it once on a family friend's PC up to the stampede). I look forward to finally playing through it and the frustration that will entail (since I have no intention of using either the skip or rewind functions). I'm stoked...for now.

I did however own the Genesis version of Aladdin and look forward to finding out just how terrible I now am. I used to be able to beat the game no sweat, and I'll definitely have to beat it legit again too (though I doubt I'll be doing no-apples runs where I don't use apples).

My copy of this can't arrive soon enough.

nowitzki20042311d ago

Back then it seemed like the devs had a challenge to make a game you couldn't beat, There is so many games that I love that I have never beat including Lion King, Contra, Megaman games, etc.. Souls type games, Cuphead, and very few others really manage to do this nowadays without feeling broken on the hardest difficulty.

Strange that they didn't offer both the SNES / Genesis cartridges for both games. I mean I am happy they are using the Genesis Aladdin because it's definitely the better game, just a little odd I guess.

retroheadz2318d ago

True, maybe its licensing. Aladdin on the SNES was done by Capcom whereas the Genesis version was done by Sega and Disney.

Neonridr2318d ago

true. But they didn't offer the Lion King on Genesis, which I think was done by the same studio. Perhaps they felt that the Sega version of Aladdin and the SNES version of the Lion King were the definitive versions of each.

Tross2317d ago

Licensing is why we can't have nice things...but it's also why we can have nice things to begin with. It's a necessary evil that has its pros and cons.

Neat. Part of me wishes I still had my Genesis, as that Aladdin cart looks amazing. I'd have to have it, even though I'd still have my original cart. Alas, I parted ways with my Genesis and all my games when I got my PS1 as my mom said I should get rid of old things when I get something new. Fast forward decades later and it seems hoarding things would have been the right way to go in retrospect. At least I can look forward to the re-release of these games on modern systems.

For the price I expected a steelbook and a few other goodies
