Nintendo 3DS Celebrates Third Birthday Today

The best-selling video game system of 2013 wasn’t a home console from either this generation or last-generation.

Beating out everything from the Xbox 360 to the PS4 was Nintendo’s handheld superstar, the 3DS.

Today, the little system turns three-years-old.

In those three years, it’s amassed an impressive catalog of must-have titles, from the new Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, to the marvelous strategy game Fire Emblem: Awakening, not to mention Pokemon, Mario, Animal Crossing and the 3D remake of Donkey Kong Country Returns.

Loving my new 3DS XL

Geekman4450d ago

With a 40 million install base you'd think people would care more.

jcnba284450d ago

That's probably because this site is mainly occupied by sony fans.

rambi804450d ago (Edited 4450d ago )

With PSN and steam aggressively pricing software, i find myself caring less tbh.

I haven't bought a game for my 3ds in a long time. Its very hard to shell out $40 for the games that i care about on that system. i wish Nintendo well, but i think i'm out.

Geekman4450d ago

There are plenty of quality 3DS games though. Perhaps you should sell it. You don't seem interested.

rambi804450d ago (Edited 4450d ago )

No argument about quality, my friend. Just about relative value. i still enjoy the games that i do own, so i think i'll hang on to it for a while

my point is that the market has changed considerably since launch.

3DS is doing really good and only continuing to remain awesome.

* Mario Golf & Super Smash Brothers still on the way.

Year 3 is usually when a lot of games start making an appearance on a system/console, so we should be seeing a good amount of games for 3DS in 2014 and into 2015 for sure.

Honestly 3DS has the best library of games out of all the new systems. As Reggie said if you don't have a 3DS "what's wrong with you"?

danny8184450d ago

still need to pick u[p a 3ds for that pokemon man

PrinceOfAllSaiyans4450d ago

I'm gonna get a 3DS XL probably in May for my birthday or a Wii U. I can't decide. Wii U has Super Mario 3D World, Zelda Wind Waker HD, and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. And some amazing upcoming games like Mario Kart 8 (Which releases 6 days after my B-day), Super Smash Bros 4, and Bayonetta 2. But the 3DS has a big library of games. I will probably get both but idk which to get first. And what games should I get for my 3DS XL (automatically gonna get Pokemon X, Zelda A Link Between Worlds, Zelda Ocorina of Time 3D, and probably Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance.

RosweeSon4450d ago

I'd probably go with the 3DS XL first due to being cheaper and having a literally massive library of fantastic games to go on, but understand mario kart and possibly smash bros due soon so wii u is defo one to watch but if you can't wait get a 3DS first as not likely to lower any further in price and shop around on the wii u in a month or 2 let's face it there's bound to be a wii u bundle with either mario kart or smash bros in the new few months ;) if not a little price cut, not much tho I wouldn't have thought ;) both great consoles tho had both since launch and never once was worried even with all the bad hype around the 3DS launch look at the beast of a console nowadays ;)

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS59d ago (Edited 59d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure83d ago (Edited 83d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer85d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot84d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box84d ago (Edited 84d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno84d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay84d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno83d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK83d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
