Multiple Sony studios have been hit by layoffs this morning, SCEE has confirmed to VideoGamer.com.

Man, now I getting worried. I know it's not unusual for studios to close, or people to be laid-off. But recently it seems to all be happening at the same time for Sony devs.

NewMonday4456d ago

someone at Sony is going postal on 1st party studios

Ninjatogo4456d ago

Maybe it's part of their company wide restructuring effort?

abzdine4456d ago (Edited 4456d ago )

i think they better restructure their company to get most out of it.
Let's see the outcome of it but PlayStation division is aware that they have good products they have to focus on.

Maybe also that PS4 developing times are way shorter that all the extra ressources from the PS2/PS3 aren't needed anymore.
cutting ressources will optimize costs and also optimise the development times cause i know that the fewer and competent the better to control the project.

GarrusVakarian4456d ago (Edited 4456d ago )

We all know Sony are having financial issues, this is called restructuring, companies do this all the time when things aren't going as well as they wish financially. Better to do it now at the start of the gen rather than wait until projects are well under way or things are in motion. If they didn't bother doing any of this then things would only get worse, they have to "trim the fat".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Sucks for all those people who have been laid off, i hope they find new work quickly.

Edit: Don't mistake my comment for damage controlling, Sony DO have financial problems, there's no denying that. But this *is* common practice for businesses and companies that are having financial issues.

abzdine4456d ago (Edited 4456d ago )

@Lukas_Japonicus:
not only for businesses with financial issues but mostly for all businesses who want to optimize output. It seems like Sony is doing it for cutting fat as you call it as well but the main reason is optimize and better control their projects.

the reason why i say this is that PS financial situation has been at its lowest a few years ago when PS3 underperformed but they still kept the extra fat cause development times were way longer than they claim they are now with PS4

Dark114456d ago

Like i said in the past something is going on with sony first party studios .. but fanboys here vote down me for trolling

I wonder who is next ND?

Evilsnuggle4456d ago (Edited 4456d ago )

abzdine
I agree with you 100% but most gamers don't understand the business. 15 year ago Apple was on the verge of bankruptcies. They did the same thing that Sony is doing now. Apple Did a major restructuring Closing office stop losing money on unsuccessful products and services to help put money for better use just like Sony. First thing Apple did is kill the Newton a product that that apple spent 100 million dollars on in 1993. Company sometime make difficult decision to get back on track. Buy cut costly projects you can invest in better product. They Apple released the iMac it becomes a huge success. The PS4 is also a huge success for Sony like the iMac was for Apple. Sony is taking saving from restructuring and invest it in profitable profitable Products like PS4 , Xperia phones and Sony movie pictures.
Apple was almost bankrupt now it the most profitable Company in the USA.

Death
I never agree with Death but this time he is a 100% right. Sony is a 72 billion Corporation No were near Bankruptcy . They are restructuring to Make greater profits and avoid bankruptcy the same with Nintendo . I read That Nintendo don't need to make a profit until 2025 before they are in danger of bankruptcies.

GameNameFame4456d ago

This doesn't tell us much... Sony is in financial problem.

But this really don't tell you much about what Sony's doing with first party. There were steady report of hiring. GE tends to do this "trim the fat" where they lay people off so they have room to hire more qualified.

DOMination-4456d ago

Also rumours of Corrine Yu leaving ND a few days ago after only a month or two there. Something big is going down at Sony.

Sony are just cutting down the fat and trying to save money at all cost..It's messed up that people have to lose their jobs in the whole process though.

Bennibop4456d ago

Perhaps PS4 development is not as labour intensive as PS3 development??

Concertoine4456d ago

@bennibop
They said before its about the same as ps3. Which is a both a testimony to how laborious it was to develop on ps3 and how easy it is to develop on ps4.

abzdine4456d ago (Edited 4456d ago )

@Concertoine: source?
cause i've heard the exact opposite

IRetrouk4456d ago

@ con

cerney already stated that development time is back down to ps1 dev times.

Well sony as a whole is in a state of consolidation and are getting rid of unnecessary spending and bloat. Simple economics really. That's why top bosses and certain top guys at sony are gone because they can be replaced with people that cost less for sony to pay.

marloc_x4456d ago Show
lelo4456d ago (Edited 4456d ago )

It's not looking good. Why the hell did Sony purchase so many first party studios, just so they lay off so many workers afterwords.

If I worked for Sony at this moment, I would be apprehensive about losing my job. Best of luck for those without a job.

andibandit4456d ago

So people could rave on about how many studios they have here on N4G

arkard4456d ago

We don't know how many workers, so don't act like 50% off the work force is now gone.

hollabox4456d ago

I thought Sony said the PlayStation division wouldn't be affected by layoffs? Maybe that billion dollar lost is hurting Sony more than they led on. Or Sony simply hired too many people to launch the PS4 in over 50 markets in just couple of months.

Death4456d ago

These are sacrificial layoffs in anticipation of the investor meeting next week. Sony's fiscal year ends this week and they are projected to lose over a billion dollars. It's the 5th loss in the past 6 years for Sony. Last year they sold their HQ's to show a small profit to investors. Their movie division is seeing layoffs and closures this week also.

Sony isn't going bankrupt. They are restructuring/downsizing so they do not go bankrupt. It's Kazuo Hirai's second full year as President and CEO of Sony. He has a lot of explaining to do to the board and most likely we will see more cuts in the coming months. It will be good for the long term health of Sony, but the short term will suffer.

As gamers the best thing to do to help Sony is to go buy more new software.

Edsword4456d ago

Restructering is a necessary evil. Will this affect current projects? Maybe, but who knows, they could have been over staffed. It could have been admin people.

TruthInsider 4456d ago

Why are they wasting money on VR insead of just adding Oculus Rift support when they are having to lay people off?

Now any benefits to making games quicker are gone if the workforce is shrinking.

kenshiro1004456d ago (Edited 4456d ago )

I hope these people are able to find jobs. These are hard times we're living in.

I suspect this is part of Sony's restructuring process. Doesn't mean that they're 'doomed' and people need to freak out.

Ausbo4456d ago

This is so unfortunate. Hope these guys find jobs. This is all suprising

Patrick_pk444456d ago

I find that the restructuring and the lay offs are a magnificent decision. Sony has been overspending on development and employees, while smaller studios can pull of the same amount of effort and work. Smaller studio = less money spent and more focus on the video game being developed.

gameon19854456d ago

So people losing their jobs is magnificent to you? That's sad that you are happy to see people lose their income because it will help a billion dollar company.Their is jack shit magnificent about this. call it what it is which is fucked up. I normally call people brain washed jokingly, but given your comment I really believe Sony has you brain washed. How the hell would you fill if you told someone your are losing your job because of restructuring, and thier responds is oh that's a magnificent decision; they can just hire someone else and pay them less then they were paying you?

kenshiro1004456d ago (Edited 4456d ago )

gameon, not ONCE did he imply that people losing jobs is a good thing. He said that Sony has been overspending as of late so its a good thing they're looking into spending LESS money so that they can be profitable in the future when it comes to developing games.

No need to spend money you don't have.

You need to read between the lines next time.

ramiuk14456d ago

i just hope that the games in development dont get cancelled and there talented devs etc get work on sony or multiplat studios.
Crazy thing with it being UK studios is im sure goverment is just about to announce tax relief for games industry development.

gameon19854456d ago

some game have all ready been cancelled like the new santa monica ip.

medman4456d ago

It's called trimming the fat. It's unfortunate, but every industry and every type of business must change with the times, or risk being left behind. Sony is restructuring, it's nothing that unusual, it is very unfortunate for the people and their families though.

dale_denton4456d ago

i wouldn't be worried.. just a restructure for profiting. but i'd be worried if the studio closed down.

Uh oh, Sony are doooooooooooooomed

I wouldn't worry about it, they probably sacked the guy who made the tea

Companies lay people off all the time, i've been on the recieving end of company cut-backs, I was lazy though

Bundi4456d ago (Edited 4456d ago )

You are trying too hard to make it seem like this is okay. 20 bucks says the tea guy is still there.

edit: how many times do I have to say it Mike?! I said coffee!! Jeez I really hope you are fired next...or me, get me out my misery!

Yup im still here now remind me do you take two sugars or one with your tea :)

MasterCornholio4456d ago

@Mike

Would you kindly make me an Irish coffee?

(BioShock reference)

Kribwalker4456d ago

This probably is also relevant in the production of consoles as well. I bet they don't shave factories running overtime building PS4s due to funding and rising cost when they run overtime. With their credit rating being reduced to junk, they probably pay high interest rate so instead of borrowing money they wait to sell through their current systems then build new ones

http://www.bloomberg.com/ne...

I know this article says nothing about my theory, it's just proof of the credit rating downgraded to junk

Hicken4456d ago

Your theory is irrelevant, anyway. Junk status assignment by companies that have been questioned by numerous governments around the world doesn't hold much weight.

But of course, that runs counter to the gloom and doom you want to spread. Might as well be a link to misterxmedia's blog, for all the credibility Moody's has right now.

bleedsoe9mm4456d ago

@Hicken its pretty obvious we are seeing a shift happening at sony , its also obvious its bad for the people losing there jobs and disrupting their lives , whether it will be good for the games sony makes isn't something there is a answer , or is it a sign of bigger problems at sony . if the latter is true its not only a problem at sony but will eventually be industry wide.

iceman064456d ago

@bleedsoe9mm....we are just now SEEING the shift that Sony had already stated would be a necessary evil in trying to return to profitability...restructuring. They hit all of their "bloated" divisions and cut some completely. Now, they are attacking the one that probably hurts the most...the games division. Now, what this should signify is that it's much harder to survive in the business today than it was 10 or 20 years ago. ALL companies will have to adjust, even those with untold fortunes, because they can't just bleed money and hope for things to turn around. We've seen major studios close that have been pretty successful. That SHOULD serve as a warning that things ARE changing. IMO, this is about the growing pains of a relatively young industry and how companies and studios manage to survive the bumps and bruises along the way.

No_Limit4456d ago

Sad news indeed. Hopefully those newly layoff employees will find work as quickly as possible. We can joke and troll on forums and it is all fun and game but when it comes to layoffs, it is a serious matter and we should be prying for those folks and their families.

MONOLITHICIDE4456d ago

Heres a tissue. You clearly need it with that sob comment.

marloc_x4456d ago (Edited 4456d ago )

Nintendo is hiring, there is always hope :)

Imonaboat14456d ago (Edited 4456d ago )

That just sucks ... No one would ever work at a company who fire people left and right.

BadlyPackedKeebab4456d ago

Indeed. We have lots of ex-game devs come into the "normal" software world because of the pay, working conditions etc.

I remember back when I graduated and they print all the awards in the paper. There were 3 times as many students graduating computer games development as there were computer science. Now given the size of the respective industries (games vs every other software including line of business etc) its no surprise the pay is low and they are worked hard.

mark3214uk4456d ago

get ready for the x1 fanboy threads that sony are going bankrupt

PrinceOfAllSaiyans4456d ago (Edited 4456d ago )

And they love to say "I hope MS hires them to to work on Gears 4." And they wanted Jack Tretton.

OT: This is sad. We really got to lower our expectations for Sonys E3 now. No wonder they Ade so quiet about games. What's next Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch ? And watch Guerrilla's and SCE Londons new games be cancelled.

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Athlon10140d ago (Edited 40d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit39d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg39d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10139d ago (Edited 39d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14939d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle52d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker53d ago (Edited 53d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit52d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog53d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_53d ago (Edited 53d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog53d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad53d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_53d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage53d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.

Everyone's Talking About DriveClub Again, PS4's Underappreciated Racer

In this day and age, it’s rare we experience a warm fuzzy feeling when we boot up X (formerly known as Twitter, of course).

But the past few days have been lovely: our feed is full of people talking about DriveClub again.

The discussion started when someone posted a clip of the game and its infamous rain effects. The caption reads: “Still can’t believe this is a 12 year old game.”

This was one I was hoping would have some kind of boost from the PS5. The devs locked that sucker so tight...

I play the PSVR one even though it doesn't look as good, because that one is 60fps.

fr0sty62d ago

To this day, there still hasn't been a game to pull off better rain effects.

Evolution Studios.. another waste of talent

fr0sty62d ago

I interviewed them twice back in my gaming journalist days... Once at E3 2006 and again on a podcast about a year later. Really nice folks.

fr0sty61d ago (Edited 61d ago )

The guy we interviewed both times' name was Simon, I can't remember his last name, it was 20 years ago, but he was a really nice guy, and was very passionate about his job. It broke my heart when I saw Sony shuttered Evolution. I do hope they bring some of those folks back, but I remember another studio ended up hiring most of them back in those days, and they've been releasing new games since under that studio... Codemasters, maybe? I forgot which....

But the amount of talent that Sony has shut down over the years, it's disturbing. Psygnosis, Evolution, Zipper... just those three studios produced some of the most innovative games that PlayStation has ever seen... and those games need to be brought back.

Agent7561d ago

Driveclub VR was graphically tragic.

maximusprime_63d ago

If they were to release that game on the PlayStation 5, there would be absolutely no need for a remaster or a remake. The whole appeal of the original game was that it consistently exceeded people's expectations.

fr0sty62d ago

Higher rendering res and textures, higher framerate, maybe toss in some global illumination/ray tracing, but other than that, they could keep every polygon the same and it would still look absolutely incredible as a current gen title.

Reaper22_62d ago

That game has good graphics but bad AI, though.

Agent7561d ago

The AI was what I'd call aggressive, but superb to play.

Jin_Sakai63d ago

Sony should reassemble the team and make Driveclub 2. Driveclub was so ahead of its time it’s crazy.

lodossrage63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

This is what I hate about gamers sometimes

There is a segment of gaming communities that always want an old game to come back. But when the game(s) were in their prime, nobody supported them or not enough people supported them. Driveclub, Killzone, Resistance, etc all fit that profile.

I want Driveclub, Killzone, Resistence, and etc all back too. But I say that as someone that bought into, played, and own those games.

Too many people like to talk but not put up the money to support when it's needed. I even lump two of my own personal friends into that. I remember how one of them constantly said "I always wanted to play the Resistance games", yet never made an effort to buy any of them. No way that's an isolated event.

IanTH61d ago (Edited 61d ago )

There are certainly games that fit that description, but I'm not sure these are a good fit:

- Driveclub infamously launched in a truly terrible state. It had a central focus on online & social features, and those were broken for about 6+ months before people could reliably play it as intended. It was so bad that the PS Plus Edition was delayed, along with its companion app. It also released less than a year after the PS4 launch, so it had to deal with a smaller total of launch PS4 owners to sell to, and Driveclub's rough launch certainly did it no favors.
- Resistance got 3 main console entries, and one handheld title for the PSP and PS Vita. Killzone got 5 main console entries across 3 generations, and one handheld title for PSP and PS Vita. This was also the era of millions of shooters, especially of the First Person variety, & genre fatigue was getting heavier by the year. So I feel these did pretty good at 5 and 7 titles respectively, pointing to enough people showing up for at least a while.

I'm not saying people don't exist who fit that criteria for these games, but I also don't think they were the primary issue. I think after a solid break from the IPs, as well as a lessening of shooter oversaturation, these titles could find healthy audiences if they came out with new entries at this point.

Agent7561d ago

Killzone on the PS4 had the graphics, but the gameplay was tragic, I only rated Killzone 3, although the first game on the PS2 was decent. The Getaway was another game Sony canned, the sequel was so bad. Plenty of games need a sequel, the likes of Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Project Gotham, Wave Race and F-Zero have been retired. The racing genre these days, I'm sick of Turismo and Forza due to the same tracks and any other clones.

robtion62d ago

I think the original Motorstorm was the game that convinced me to buy a ps3. Way ahead of its time.

Storm2362d ago

I played the sh*t out of MotorStorm 1 and 2. Incredible games.

darthv7262d ago

Pacific Rift was the best of the bunch for me.

badz14961d ago

Pacific Rift for me is still the best off-road racer ever made

Agent7561d ago

Surprised Sony didn't release a collectio, but all they seem to do these days is release God of War and Uncharted collections. It kills me that I no longer have a PS3, so a collection would be awesome.
