On The Topic Of Difficulty

An opinion piece via EGMR in which the author discusses Dark Souls II's difficulty curve and explains why it's nothing to really celebrate.

Quote: "Do you know what the main difference is? Besides the obvious different settings, developers and approaches to narrative. In Mass Effect 2, I felt proper difficulty. Proper challenge. In Dark Souls II, it just feels like an unnecessary chore. "

Demon Souls hard, Dark Souls semi hard and Dark Souls 2 some what easy. I had not to many problems beating bosses by myself.

i disagree, i think DS2 is way harder than dark souls 1. DS1 was only hard at a handful of moments like the spider chick in blightown and orn and smough. but other than those, not hard.

Dark souls 2 though, its been way harder to get to that point where i breeze through everything like i did after orn and smough in DS1. plus they keep farming down and have the life penalty.

demon souls on the other hand, that game was just hard in every way

Demon's Souls on NG+ was incredible though. Such a challenge

"almost all bosses have the same tactic here in DS 2. Just circle and block and hit."

yes its easy to describe the game as "just circle and block and hit" you can break almost any game down like that lol since thats the basics of the game. watch....

"almost all bosses have the same tactic here in Mass effect. Just take cover, pop out, shoot or ability".

very easy to break a game down to its basics but obviously its much more than that and in most cases, thats only gonna take you so far esp solo. sometimes you need to exploit weaknesses, use co-op, change to different armor/gear, use magic or arrows, parry, or sometimes jsut use brute force.

OmegaShen4445d ago

Then you must not be very good, bosses do pretty much the same moves over and over. I have the bosses by myself, heck the one on the ship you just need to keep close to the pole and he attacks, get on his side and attack.

Or just block/dodge and attacks, no skill needed or higher level.

almost all bosses have the same tactic here in DS 2. Just circle and block and hit.

DoctorJones4445d ago

You could apply that logic in any Souls game. It's not really true though, because there's more to it than that.

Circle and block against the Belfrey Gargoyles? Only going to get you so far.

Circle and block against Old Iron King? Not really an option.

Circle and block against The Royal Rat Vanguard? Good luck with that.

You can prove me wrong if you like.

Circle strafing and blocking and waiting your time for a strike in the meantime and rinse repeat is a successful tactic on those bosses.

I have done this EXACT tactic myself.

Exception would be the Smelter Demon, unless you have the 100% Fire reduction shield. In that one I dodged/rolled past his attacks, (also Iron King, rather then blocked, but those other bosses, that tactic works

The bosses are very disappointing. Except for a select few, they have a very basic attack pattern, especially the bosses on the way to Iron Keep.

Mass Effect 2 had difficulty and challenge? The game was pretty much made to attract another audience, and i didn't feel much challenge after playing ME1. Besides, ME2 had been rushed and they didn't have time for some other features.

While this is someones opinion I won't say its wrong, just that I disagree. Dark Souls 2 (Along with its predecessors) made the game challenging by throwing you into a world you didn't understand and not helping you. The reason I love the series so much is because it teaches you REAL EXPERIENCE. If you do not learn how to play you do not progress. That coupled with the amazing set pieces and exploration make every one of these games a great ride start to finish.

That's like, your opinion man.

An opinion I don't agree with.

This feels like the epitome of a 'tepid take'. Dark Souls has always worn its gothic horror influences on its sleeve, it isn't exactly subtle.

DarXyde209d ago

Dark fantasy, I'd say.

Horror is a bit much. Bloodborne is closer to horror.

gold_drake209d ago

mh ur right actually.

dark souls plays around with horror themes without being a straight "horror" game.

bloodborn definitely starts out as that haha.
