Why You Should Play Infamous: Second Son on Expert

A superhero is nothing without a proper villain. Imagine if you had the strength of a titan, the speed of a runaway bus, and the gliding prowess of a flying squirrel. The world would be your playground, and the normals who populated the streets would be nothing more than pawns in whatever game you devised.

Nice article. I usually just play on normal difficulty to experience the story but it sounds like the game is funner when playing on hard

BlakHavoc4447d ago

What do you mean experience the story? You can't do that on hard? Or do you just get discouraged if you die a lot through the initial playthrough? An honest question by the way...

yellowgerbil4447d ago

well dying and reloading breaks the immersion, so yeah when I play for story I like it to not die, Tomb Raider was terrible for immersion with all those stupid QTE I kept failing and impaling into trees...
Though Infamous has never really been all that difficult so if it is more rewarding to play on hard probably will do that for first playthrough instead of normal difficulty.

morganfell4447d ago

There is something to be said for playing games on the top levels of difficulty when they are available.

However, there are equally other discussions that support lower difficulties. Ideas of elitism have no place there but rather it is a matter of balance.

Playing HALO on Hard rather than Legendary was always a preference for me because that was the level where damage was most closely aligned with the descriptions in the books.

inFamous is a superhero game. Can you imagine if Superman punched Zod 10 times and nothing happened and then Zod struck him 1 time and he died? I understand exactly what yellowgerbil is saying. Immersion is always key to me on any first playthrough of a game where story matters.

xX-StolenSoul-Xx4447d ago

I beat the game on expert on my first playthrough. It was not very hard, I only had trouble on the last boss battle.

ZodTheRipper4447d ago

Every InFamous was more fun on the hardest difficulty because you have to play more thoughtful and use your whole arsenal. I can only encourage everyone to go with Expert on the second playthrough, it's wayyyy more fun trust me =)

christian hour4447d ago (Edited 4447d ago )

Thats exactly how I found my experience with the last two infamous games, played on medium for my first playthrough (whether it was good or evil) and then for the second playthrough/set of moral choices I'd up the difficulty and it really did make it a lot more enjoyable and tactful.

In fact my strongest memories of the first infamous game was playing on expert difficulty (and of course seeing that amazing plot twist ending for the first time) spotting my targets, choosing an approach and taking careful shots before storming in and disappearing again to rethink the next approach, while they run around in confusion.

Infamous: Second Son was a lot of fun, but as with the second one, personally the story did not have the same lasting impact as the first, but thats the thing about playing new IP's for the first time, it's very hard, maybe even impossible, to recpature that feeling of experiencing something new in later sequels.

I imagine people who's first experience with the series is Second Son will feel the exact same way about Second Son that I do for the first inFamous.

itBourne4446d ago

I always play on the hardest difficulty, games are way to damn easy now. That being said I have no problem if people prefer it on lower difficulties. EXCEPT, the Last of Us, I truly feel that to be fully immersed that game should be played on atleast hard, and listen mode should not be in the game.

jayswolo4446d ago

I'll use Uncharted 3 as an example.

I loved playing through UC3, however, I did not love playing UC3. It was broken, repetitive and generally unexciting. But it was all about getting to that next cool scene/setpiece/story event. The sometimes wonky platform, and the overtly scripted nature of the game sometimes made remember I was playing a game, instead of the "cinematic" experience that ND wanted players to think of.

TL;DR Frustration due gameplay takes away from the enjoyment of every other aspect of a game.

nveenio4446d ago

I play all inFamous games on hardest difficulty with evil karma on the first play through so that I get the hard level trophy out of the way. By playing as evil, it's much easier to beat the game on expert. Now, I can relax and enjoy the good play through on easy.

I play on Easy because I am a wimp :(

TheTowelBoy4447d ago

I only agreed hoping you'd fee better :P no offense. Lol

DragonKnight4447d ago

Don't frown. The difficulty level you play on doesn't matter. All that matters is if you're enjoying yourself playing the game. If playing on anything higher than easy makes you too frustrated and discouraged to enjoy the game, then you shouldn't play on those levels. If Easy is just the right challenge for you, without making the game a cake walk so you get bored, then that's what you should play on.

DeadMansHand4447d ago

No shame in that amigo. Since I am a die hard infamous player I play expert for both good/evil playthroughs. However, God of War? Easy mode. Why? I hate hack n slashing but reeeeally love the GOW story and graphics so I want to just do a super easy playthrough to see everything. To each their own my friend.

AceBlazer134447d ago

I play normal during my good playthrough since i have to be precise and avoid citizens n all that.Exper/Hard during my evil because I can go all out.

ramiuk14447d ago

thats my plan 2,evil it dont matter who i kill

SoulSercher6204447d ago

I'm actually the other way around. Normal when evil. Hard when good. Makes my heroism that much sweeter.

incendy354447d ago

Second Son's story isn't worth experiencing anyway. Damn you Sucker Punch, hire some writers!

CJDUNCAN4447d ago

Yeah I just finished the evil path earlier this morning and it left me feeling like something was missing. If we are honest about this game, the main story is what about 6 hours? Honestly running around taking out DUP influenced distracts is just meh. I stopped with about 5 districts left.

The whole game is essentially chase this person, hey wait I just want your powers. Prank call the same DUP agent, boss battle, and that's it.

I plan on doing the good path for the trophies but IDK this game is just bland and only picks up when towards the end.

SoulSercher6204447d ago

I disagree there. Maybe it wasn't as fleshed out as Infamous 1 or 2 but the story is great as is and is a breath of fresh air for the series. Not only is it about fighting back against oppression from a conduit's point of view, it's about someone embracing their power rather than someone believing he is "cursed" with it. I'd rather stick with this than have another Cole MacGrath.

CJDUNCAN4446d ago

Don't get me wrong Soul, if it was just the story from beginning to end then I like the story of revolting against oppression. But it's watered down with mundane tasks that only fluff the game length.

If you only focused on the main story it's easily a 5-6 hour game.

1.get your powers
2.fetch
3.Super agent
3.eugene
4.betrayal
5.boss

Not to mention a side quest that requires an online profile but the website doesn't actually work. So much fluff in the game.

When I think about rue lengthy games, the main story is easily 20-25 hours, like the Assassin's creed series. You really get bang for your buck in those games.

ISS, is a cool entry into the Infamous series but it's lacking in appeal.

There's so much I find wrong with the game out of personal taste.

Rainstorm814446d ago

Duncan your same complaint can be put on assassins creed.....follow this character, eavesdropping, assassinate rinse repeat every year

It's easy to over simplify anything

I usually, play games on hard to start with, so yeah I started it on Expert, and went for the evil option. When I play it again I'll play it on normal for teh good run through.

DAS6924446d ago

Just get better at the game... I always play games on hard and I never have an issue with "immersion" or enjoyability. It makes you appreciate the game more as well, because in most--if not all--cases it forces you to play with more care than just playing the game and enjoying the "story" which only lasts so long.

rainbow-dash4447d ago

I love playing it on expert because I love a good challenge.

Chaostar4447d ago (Edited 4447d ago )

I'm playing on normal for my 'good' playthrough as it's a litte bit more difficult when you have to worry about hurting civilians.

Then I'm gonna unleash all kinds of hell on expert in my 'bad' playthrough :)

Idba4447d ago

Same :Det looking forward to be able to go crazy on everyone and everything

BlakHavoc4447d ago

Why wouldn't you? I personally play all my games on the hardest difficulty available, I love a challenge in all my games and it keeps me from flying through it effortlessly. I don't understand people who just play on normal or even easy...like you must plan on beating it within 7 days so you can get your money back.

LOGICWINS4447d ago

Playing on normal first gives me something to look forward to later. Im taking my sweet ass time with the game to enjoy everything it has to offer being Good. Afterwards I'll play Evil on Expert. On normal, the bosses offer an okay challenge, but it didnt satisfy me. Thats really my only gripe with the game. Fortunately, it can be fixed by upping the difficulty.

Grave4447d ago

Yep. Normal go as good, Expert go as bad. That way if you start getting frustrated with the difficulty you can take it out on the city and its inhabitants and not feel bad at all about it one bit.

No FanS Land4447d ago (Edited 4447d ago )

I'm currently playing the game on expert as good (already Champion after 2hours of gameplay) and I find the game less hard than the first 2 infamous on hard.
However I believe the better control layout helps a lot in it and also that Delsin has a true dodge move. Cole's dodge was awful.

I really dig the stencil art moments, holding the controller sideways like a can is a nice feature!

PS. Do some of you have any problem with downloading cole's Legacy DLC? ce-329206 error keeps popping.

xX-StolenSoul-Xx4447d ago

I agree, the game is less hard than infamous 1 and 2 on hard. It is still a fun game. Stencil art is amazing, i love how the audio works with the dualshock 3 with the can rattle.

kneon4447d ago (Edited 4447d ago )

I thought that was clever, it does sound like you've got a spray can in your hand. It's certainly not that important, but these little touches add to the immersion.

Now for the next step I want some developer to step up and write a companion app for your phone so that when you use a phone in a game you can use your actual phone. I don't know why watch dogs doesn't do that, it seems an obvious fit for that game.

RollinThunder4447d ago

Agreed on stencil art; it and the audio logs are always my first side missions. =)

Case sensitive code and I know I mistook a G for a 6 my first glance/entry. My code worked fine after I fixed it, though.

No FanS Land4447d ago

I got the code to work but it won't download. I went on the forums for clarification and there was the exact same problem with KZ:SF DLC but no real support from sony.

They really need to

Go off the evil ending off Second Son

Delsin absorbs all those powers

Revealed he’s the real Beast and John in Infamous 2 was just an anomaly created by timelines being messed with by Kessler.

Cole vs the Real Beast

gold_drake676d ago

quite honestly, i dont remember a whole lot about 2 amymore, but i absolutely hated the guy in second son haha.

chicken_in_the_corn676d ago

It would make more sense to go off the evil ending of 2 and the good ending g of SS where Cole is The Beast.

Cacabunga675d ago

Doesnt make any sense calling second son 2 as infamous 3..

OtterX676d ago

Ha, yea Delsin was obnoxious.

I wouldn't mind another new character, but somehow bring Cole into the story.

We can just pretend like Delsin never existed. :)

thejigisup675d ago

Everyone that age is obnoxious. It's been years and is like to think delsin has grown

neutralgamer1992675d ago

Until we wait for a potential new entry it would awesome to have infamous collection for PS5

RaidenBlack676d ago

Umm ... how about this?
First we get the Tushima sequel(coz its most rumored)
Then a new Resistance (need new PS SP FPS)
Then a totally new IP (new IPs are always interesting)
And then a new inFamous?

Pepsi_Man3000675d ago

resistance is insomniac I think

xHeavYx675d ago

Can we also get a complete remaster of InFamous 1 and 2?

fr0sty675d ago

Gimme a new Warhawk and MAG while we're at it.

DivineHand125676d ago

I had a great time with the second son. Never got to play the originals and hope they get remastered one day.

DazaMc675d ago

The graphics were amazing, I got the platinum on that one. Very good.

ChasterMies676d ago (Edited 676d ago )

If I had a choice between another Infamous game and another Spider-Man game, I choose Spider-Man. Sony should spend its resources on its winners.

Tacoboto675d ago (Edited 675d ago )

Infamous was such a winner its studio was given the freedom (after 3 titles + their expansions) to do a new IP with GoT, just like with Sly Cooper before infamous.

I'd welcome a 4th title even more than another Spider-Man, it'd be exciting what they could do with new powers fit for the hardware outside the limits of a licensed superhero game.

jznrpg675d ago

Spider-Man is guaranteed and is made by Insomniac so why not both as Sucker Punch would make Infamous.
