Ideas That Sony Abandoned And Why Its VR Headset Will Probably Fail

"Sony has a tendency to bring innovative and exciting new experiences with their products and their main environment for this is, of course, the Playstation platform. So no wonder that they took on Oculus Rift with their own VR headset, Project Morpheus. Most people, and make no mistake, myself included, were pretty excited upon hearing this. You’ve got to admit, virtual reality headsets are pretty science-fiction and most of us only dreamt about them in our younger years. To put a thing on your head and your eyes and to project yourself into the game’s own world – cool stuff! But this reminds me of something. Actually, it reminds me of a couple of things that did the same thing in the past: excited us before their release, entertained us on their release, but got old very quickly short after their release. And they were all orchestrated by Sony."

However this finally plays out, a good argument for a headset of some kind, is it obviates having a giant TV set you can't take with you. I think just like the rise of phones and tablets that are small compared to big PCs, a small and comfy headset could offer a superior entertainment experience with movies and games that doesn't require the massive wall space or power constraints.

I think everybody wants this grail, but nobody has figured it out yet.

I think Sony is going to push the morpheus to the max. I also think that they'll introduce it as a VR & affordable personal viewer.

Honestly I do not think ANY VR venture will succeed whether it is sonys or Rift. I do not think you can create a 10-20 hour experience where a gamer will want something strapped to there face. Also at 250+ dollars on top of expensive system and game costs, I just do not see it being widely adopted.

The most damning thing was Ubisoft was not sold. Usually they are sold on just about everything.

I get what you're saying, I doubt it will be mainstream but whats wrong with a new optional product that provides a new experience, I just have ADHD so I hate doing the same thing even if I love it the same way all the time, hell even if I only touched VR for an hour a week, then go back to my controller for 30 hrs, that's fine.

I would buy it for a good racing game in a heartbeat if it allowed me to see what I can see from a regular car. I spent $200 on my racing wheel. I don't expect this thing to be like the VR that we see on TV where you stand in some circular device and somehow move around freely with a complete 360 degree view at all times. At most it will provide more immersion for the player, and possibly quicker response time to games through head movements instead of right stick camera turning(a great thing for racing or FPS games).

It's a starting point. It is very likely this thing won't be widely adopted, and it's still a year or two off from release. But everything has to start somewhere. If it becomes more accepted, then there is nothing from stopping it from growing into something bigger and better.

The biggest barrier to this device in the realm of VR for consumers is that it's meant to be a home level product. The reality is, is that there is only so much "movement' that people can do in their homes and still be safe.

VR is obviously the future, just at what point in the future is unclear. I don't know when it will be picked up by the population.

Dudebro904454d ago (Edited 4454d ago )

Strapping a device to your face is not the future

RoboticusRex4454d ago

Come back in ten years and say that. If VR grows into an amazing and engaging experience, people will wear it.

SteamPowered4454d ago

All technology starts somewhere. The first cell phone you had to strap to your back.

Nodoze4454d ago

Agree. People were bitching about wearing 3d glasses. This thing is destined for the dust bin!

Thehyph4454d ago

A poor choice of words I think. Even if VR didn't work out, smart devices will probably see maximum efficacy on your face, a la Google glass.

frostypants4454d ago

Dudebro, what other alternative is there for achieving full immersion? Sorry buddy, you'll be playing some games with something strapped to your noggin within a few years, and you'll like it.

creatchee4454d ago

Something like the Star Trek Holodeck is the future. Head-mounted VR failed with Virtual Boy and those giant VR dinosaur hunter games at malls and Dave & Busters. At best, this redux be a niche market, whether you talk about Sony, Microsoft, or Oculus. It's cool in theory, and will appeal to the extremely hardcore set, but price and support will ultimately push this to fringe adoption.

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2148d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
