Without Microsoft On Board Virtual Reality Could Be A Bust

Over the last few months you may have heard a rising number of people talking about virtual reality in games. On the PC, if you’re looking into virtual reality, you are looking at the Oculus Rift – and before yesterday that was the only option. Announced by Sony, virtual reality will soon also come to the console in the form of the PlayStation project “Morpheus.” Without Microsoft bringing their own VR headset into the mix, all of the work toward virtual reality gaming could come to a screeching halt.

without microsoft on board virtual reality should take off

JoGam4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

Cmon man get it together. On front page of N4G there's a article with the title...Microsoft: We’re willing to “see how the VR space evolves”.

And now there's this article which says Without MS on Board VR could be a bust. Which one is it? Are they going to sit back and wait and see how serious this VR becomes or do we need MS to make it happen? Maybe it should be a opinion piece. smh

JoeIsMad4435d ago

That's the point exactly. Microsoft might sit by and watch the VR market die but if they supported it, the tech is pretty universal and potentially very successful. You could have answered your own questions by reading the article :(

JoGam4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

Again, Maybe it should be a "OPINION" piece.

When you say things like "IF" MS supported it....

That's not fact, just opinion.

JoeIsMad4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

The reason why this article wasn't submitted as an opinion piece is because it was supported by historical information and current industry movement. Reading within, you can see that Ubisoft isn't getting on board until over 1 million VR headsets have sold. With the help of MS, Sony and Oculus could make this happen.

It's not as if I said, "This is impossible without Microsoft." There is a way out into the sun without MS, but it's way easier with them.

BitbyDeath4435d ago

Same as previously seen with Blu-ray isn't it?
MS backed HD-DVD and Blu-ray still came through with the win.

AceBlazer134435d ago

Or we move on without microsoft. They were against blu ray yet look at them now.You ppl give microsoft more than they deserve

scott1824435d ago

I think VR will be big, Sony is smart to show a product.

PoSTedUP4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

i disagree with this article. i think it should be: Without RockStarr, Treyarch and IW, VR could be a bust. but a bunch of good devs are already on board. GT7 with VR will be big amongst its fans. if theyll go out of their way to buy a nice wheel, they deff go out of the way to be in the car, as well. im honestly not too worried, i think a lot of people have been wanting VR their whole lives, and only now is it going to be cheap and convenient enough for people to get their hands on it. by the time it releases i think the ps4 will be $350-300, and to get a next gen system with good VR for the price of a new PS3, i think ppl will jump on top of it. plus Sony is going to market this thing well, for sure. so picture how decent the OR is in popularity amongst PC owners with nothing but word of mouth... now picture a cheaper VR on a cheaper but powerful platform for the masses at an affordable price PLUS a good marketing campaign from sony on TV.

I think MS are foolish not to see this, imo.

morganfell4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

Microsoft should stay on the sidelines. They damage everything they touch.

Whether it is music players, gaming, tablets, or phones they enter an industry with no true grasp of the spirit of that field. They throw around a lot of money, try to buy out and undercut competitors and they think they are successful.

But they are not.

Their policies end up harming areas in which they conduct an endeavor more than they help. They have no respect for the microcosm, the ecosystem of a field when they come into it. They are the Sheriff JW Pepper of gaming and VR will be some much better off without them around.

PSN-JeRzYzFyNeSt4435d ago

Microsoft will not be able to handle making Games for VR, they barely make any Xbox games now imagine with VR it would be dryer then a grandmas pussy

Godmars2904435d ago

MS supported HD-DVD. Supported it to spite Blu-ray.

How did that turn out?

johndoe112114435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

I agree with this article, if microsoft doesn't do a vr product where else would we get a vr headset that needs internet access and a live gold account to work? Imagine all the vr features in games that will be available on the xbox one a month before any other system.

All the additional special cables and adapters you would have to buy to get it to work. And God forbid if any company decides to implement any vr feature on another system if the microsoft headset can't do it.

And best of all, think of the ton of EA exclusives the xbone will get because EA will suddenly think that vr is a "BRILLIANT" idea. Yep, I think we all should be excited about microsoft getting into the VR arena. Great times ahead......................... .............................. . .............................. . .............................. wait...what????

Edit: @morganfell
Its not so much that they damage everything they touch, it's more like they completely destroy it by implementing draconian policies, removing customer rights, overcharging for the products, moneyhatting everyone they can possibly think of and then convincing the public that it was in their best interest and they did us a favor. And i'm not just referencing the xbone here, these practices started with their operating systems.

DragonKnight4435d ago

JoeIsMad: An opinion supported by history is still an opinion. What you stated isn't fact, thus it's opinion. You even say "could" be a bust indicating probability. And since you're not an omniscient being, you have no way of knowing one way or the other, so this entire article is based strictly on what YOU believe, hence an opinion.

Anyway, virtual reality is an idea bigger than all the companies currently involving themselves in the technology to bring it out. With or without Microsoft, VR will happen. Microsoft's inclusion isn't necessary for VR's success.

fr0sty4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

MS needs to sit this one out. XB1 is struggling to render images above 720p at 60fps in many games, so in order to handle VR at high res, they are going to need new hardware or to dumb down the visuals of the game significantly. You have to keep in mind, there are 2 eyes, which means it has to calculate the perspective of each eye, then render each one taking up half of the total visor's frame, at 60fps. So, you only get half resolution per eye. If Xbox One can only handle 720p at 60fps, you'll get half 720p VR out of it... and that isn't even taking into account the extra overhead needed to render the other eye's frame from another perspective. If you go below 60fps, the latency can make you dizzy, so 60fps or higher is the sweet spot.

SilentNegotiator4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

I doubt that VR needs them to survive.

its_JEFF4435d ago

@JoelsMad That's kind of been the issue with MS lately... they've been late to the table with things, I'm not talking about videogames. Zune, late to the party. Surface/tables, late to the party. Both failed, come on MS... jump in! VR can become a big thing if everybody is on board!

lolCHILLbro4435d ago

Well it cant hurt VR with another major platform holder on board like Microsoft, maybe he meant without all of gaming on board with VR it might bust, right now its only on PC and PS4 and to be honest it might be best on PC as its an open platform and anyone can do anything with the tech, it should be good for all platforms though i hope

guitarded774435d ago

Come on guys... there's a simple solution to all this mess... Just wait and see what Pachter says, then the opposite will happen. Simple as that.

UltraNova4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

All Sony needs to do is to make a deal with Rockstar to make the next GTA VR enabled (it should be no problem squeezing VR in their 5 year development cycle). That will be money well spent and a massive advantage over the Xbox version of the game.

Plus throw in GT7, Uncharted 4, that NASA stuff and some more documentary style VR experiences (from their film studios), all VR enabled from the get go and you will have instant VR penetration with Ubi, Activision and EA begging to get a piece of the pie.

rainslacker4434d ago

While MS is no slouch in creating or pushing new tech in the development arena, the fact remains that before they ever come around to mainstream consumer adoption, they always wait and see how things are going. Every consumer level product they make(Zune, Windows phone OS, Surface, consoles, and now VR), they wait and see. Then when they come to market, they are mostly fighting an uphill battle against those that have pushed the market forward by providing consumer level products.

MS doesn't need to be on board for VR tech, but they currently are. They have their own solution to VR. However, what we don't need in this arena is competing tech that all does the same thing. Unfortunately, competition doesn't mean that the best always wins out, it just means whoever puts the most marketing behind it wins.

They are most likely experimenting, but not official. Microsoft is olaying smart not dumping so much r&d time and money on it. Just how they did with handhelds. I love my vita but its paying a slow and painful death. The VR is only gonna put the last nail to psvitas coffin. I love sony, but they try and put there fingers where it just wont work. Ans sony doesnt have much money to push the vr so im sure it'll only be relevent for a couple years before it dies off. There just isnt such a big of market for it

Eddie201014435d ago

rodiabloalmeida4435d ago

On consoles, maybe. PC have Oculus Rift, so we lead the convoy.

VR is awesome and checking out Occulus Rift at PAX last year was amazing but, I don't think this will take off as much as we all would like. VR goggles have been trying to get into the market since Virtual Boy back in the day, granted we are leaps and bounds away from that as far as tech goes, the principal is still there, and i don't think there will be enough demand at the end of the day. Microsoft may be in the right mindframe to sit this one out.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio12d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing12d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit12d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing12d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn215d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn214d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown14d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay14d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay14d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac14d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger14d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300014d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde14d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde14d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_13d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
