Edge: inFamous Second Son Review

As an open-world game, Second Son feels emaciated. There’s little to do in the way of side missions, and what is here becomes repetitive, unlikely to sustain interest beyond a single playthrough. Approach it as an action game that just happens to be set in a nonlinear environment and it makes more sense, but its not-inconsiderable achievements take effort to uncover. By the time you’ve gained the full suite of powers, though, it’s easy to forget its shaky first steps and impossible not to share Rowe’s vocal enthusiasm each time he does something spectacular. And Sucker Punch provides plenty of opportunities to do so.

"There’s little to do in the way of side missions,"

I'd just like to point out that the day 1 patch for this games adds 19 new missions and around an extra 5 hours of gameplay.

I really think Sucker Punch should have released that *before* people reviewed it. Some of these lower scores have said that there isn't enough to do outside of the main story. If only they had the day one patch prior to their review. Oh well.

xHeavYx4466d ago

Well, people knew that there was a day 1 patch. But the sooner people get the reviews out the more clicks they'll get

Alan_Shore4466d ago

Most games dont get reviewed with the patch. Whole point is reviewing something how it is packaged and before general public can get there hand's on it so they have something to reference towards.

Although alot of site's have been changing score's after release as of late.

Volkama4466d ago

It's a review for the 4 people in a nuclear submarine that didn't take Don Mattrick's advice on which console to buy.

Neonridr4466d ago

didn't stop Battlefield 4 from getting good scores across the board even though the Multiplayer was fubar'd beyond belief upon launch.

Your point being?

Reviewer says there's not enough side missions.

Day one patch brings 19 new ones and around 5 hours of additional gameplay.

If that patch was available to this reviewer before he reviewed it, it may have improved his score. But oh well, what is done is done.

My pre order still says "pre ordered"...hurry up and dispatch it, Amazon!

Neonridr4466d ago (Edited 4466d ago )

fair enough. But if we are using the mentality that we should be reviewing games after patches, then where does it stop? I mean even a 6/10 game could become an 8/10 game if the right sort of patches are applied in the first month.

I think it's fair to review a game based on what is included in the package, not what you get updated down the road (even if it's a day one patch).

"But if we are using the mentality that we should be reviewing games after patches"

I never said games should be reviewed post patch, read my comments again. I said SP should have included before reviews were made...maybe then the reviews would have been higher. I agree with you completely that a game should be reviewed as it is when the reviewer receives it.

At the very least i think reviewers who knocked off points for lack of content outside of the main story should add a note at the bottom of their reviews stating that the day one patch adds more missions. One of the main criticisms i see is lack of side missions...that is rectified with the day one patch and would most likely affect some of the lower scores.

Neonridr4466d ago

@Lukas - yep, it definitely helps.

But regardless, the game is still getting great scores, so I'm sure I will be having a blast with it.

Thats a ton of content in a patch.

O.O

ArchangelMike4466d ago

I know that both IGN and Gametrailers have updated their reviews of various games in the past (I'm boycotting reviews so don't know if they've taken the patch into consideration with their review scores).

But yeah, if this is a review of an 'incomplete' version of the game, I think reviewers have a duty to inform their readers. They basically reviewed a different version of the game than the one we get to play 0.o

it's getting mediocre scores.. uh oh it's a horrible game i'm not going to buy it. /sarcasm

LethalButterfly4466d ago

As i said in another thread...I'am P.C game so dont comment on console exclusives but can see the xbone fans loving this. seeing as this was the titanfall beater to the ps4 fanboys... let the games begin

SteamPowered4466d ago

As a pc gamer, you should know to hold yourself to a higher standard than the console wars.
I'm a neutral party. Just a witness.

infectedaztec4466d ago

I'm an xb1 owner and haven't bought Titanfall yet. I will also say that Infamous looks like the best exclusive to hit the PS4 yet.

I hold alot of faith in Edge reviews, but after a quick look didn't find their Titanfall review. Anybody know what it got?

BTW this isnt a competition between them. Both games look worth buying if you're into their genre.

incendy354466d ago

I am still getting it, but definitely disappointing considering the hype.

They really need to

Go off the evil ending off Second Son

Delsin absorbs all those powers

Revealed he’s the real Beast and John in Infamous 2 was just an anomaly created by timelines being messed with by Kessler.

Cole vs the Real Beast

gold_drake693d ago

quite honestly, i dont remember a whole lot about 2 amymore, but i absolutely hated the guy in second son haha.

chicken_in_the_corn692d ago

It would make more sense to go off the evil ending of 2 and the good ending g of SS where Cole is The Beast.

Cacabunga691d ago

Doesnt make any sense calling second son 2 as infamous 3..

OtterX692d ago

Ha, yea Delsin was obnoxious.

I wouldn't mind another new character, but somehow bring Cole into the story.

We can just pretend like Delsin never existed. :)

thejigisup691d ago

Everyone that age is obnoxious. It's been years and is like to think delsin has grown

neutralgamer1992692d ago

Until we wait for a potential new entry it would awesome to have infamous collection for PS5

RaidenBlack692d ago

Umm ... how about this?
First we get the Tushima sequel(coz its most rumored)
Then a new Resistance (need new PS SP FPS)
Then a totally new IP (new IPs are always interesting)
And then a new inFamous?

Pepsi_Man3000692d ago

resistance is insomniac I think

xHeavYx692d ago

Can we also get a complete remaster of InFamous 1 and 2?

fr0sty691d ago

Gimme a new Warhawk and MAG while we're at it.

DivineHand125692d ago

I had a great time with the second son. Never got to play the originals and hope they get remastered one day.

DazaMc691d ago

The graphics were amazing, I got the platinum on that one. Very good.

ChasterMies692d ago (Edited 692d ago )

If I had a choice between another Infamous game and another Spider-Man game, I choose Spider-Man. Sony should spend its resources on its winners.

Tacoboto691d ago (Edited 691d ago )

Infamous was such a winner its studio was given the freedom (after 3 titles + their expansions) to do a new IP with GoT, just like with Sly Cooper before infamous.

I'd welcome a 4th title even more than another Spider-Man, it'd be exciting what they could do with new powers fit for the hardware outside the limits of a licensed superhero game.

jznrpg691d ago

Spider-Man is guaranteed and is made by Insomniac so why not both as Sucker Punch would make Infamous.
