Resistance 2 Multiplayer Pushes the Limit

Insomniac decided to up the ante once again by bolstering the multiplayer mode for Resistance 2, pushing the limit to 60 players. While this may seem like complete overkill, Tom's Games had a chance to experience Resistance 2's multiplayer mode in action during Sony's Pre-E3 Gamer's Day last Friday, and the results were impressive. "We refused to believe that eight on eight is the perfect multiplayer game," said Colin Munson, Insomniac's lead designer for Resistance 2.

60 players is "the limit" for the PS3?

On Xbox original, there was a 40 player multiplayer game.
On Xbox 360's exclusive Frontlines: Fuel of War, you can play 50 player multiplayer **right now**.
On the upcoming Huxley, the MMOFPS will have servers with up to 10,000 player at the same time, and deploy battles that range from 1vs1 missions to 60 vs 60 (120 total!) missions.

Resistence's 60 players is nothing unique or special.

Tmac6570d ago

Really Huxley you say? You mean the game that hasn't had any news on it since 2007?

You give Xbox fanatics a bad name.

Varsarus6570d ago

60 players isn't the limit for the PS3....

Frontlines had 50 players, ONLY on one map.

Huxley 60 vs 60 or w.e was only announced on the PC version, haven't heard anything about the 360 version, and I seriously doubt it can handle that many players...

kevoncox6570d ago

I think Resistance's multiplayer will be good but poorly executed. There is no way you will be able to find a group of 60 players to play the game as it's meant. Here are my reasons....

#1) No OE mics. Still an issue when i go online with my friends ps3. over 2/3rds of the rooms have no mic. In a game that is objective driven..this will cause me to pull my hair out.

2) D*cks...There will be people online who will rather run around in a circle than do the objectives. It's almost imporssible to get 16 players to play as they should online. Imagine 60.

Fishy Fingers6570d ago (Edited 6570d ago )

Kev, maybe you should read before you speak.

R2 will have dynamic maps, ie the more players the larger the map gets, scaled to accommodate the amount of players to always keep the action tight.

The game is broken into clans of up to 8 players, this means you can play with just your friends even in a 60 player match, that means your mic problems sorted, and well the only "D*cks" would be your friends if they're in your team.

Tmac6570d ago

Kevon? Reading comprehension is not your forte huh? -1.

thewhoopimen6570d ago

Every example you've given so far has shown how badly implemented 40+ vs 40+ games have been. Frontlines blew. Huxley will blow (I don't even believe the designers even had real experience with FPS genre). The big win for this gen isn't necessarily how many people are able to play together at the same time, rather it is how well a 60+ vs. 60+ match can be implemented without breaking down into chaos, that and managing lag. My bet is on Insomniac's implementation.

shazam6570d ago

"The graphics overall were no better or worse than what Insomniac delivered with the first title, and given that the title is scheduled to ship this fall, I don't expect the visuals to be upgraded vastly from what I saw last week."

This guy is beyond blind. He has like wooden eyeballs or something.

Panthers6570d ago

Lets get something straight, its not going to be 30v30

ITs going to be in squads. Probably 5 squads of 8

gamesR4fun6570d ago

lol rfom owned any console fps online. rfom2 is gonna set the bar even higher...

thewhoopimen6570d ago

Unfortunately, Shazam that part is true. According to Insomniac, they haven't implemented RFOM2 graphical assets yet into their demo... so you literally are looking at RFOM1 polygon/textures. But obviously that will change.

Timesplitter146570d ago

Hey look! It's one of those rare wow4u comments that actually weren't deleted!

clintos596570d ago

I can say the same for the almighty gears of war u praise so much. Is 10 the most u can do with gears? The ps2 was able to do more then that. So whats the problem?

TheIneffableBob6570d ago

Tribes supports up to 128 players, and that game released in 1998.

juuken6570d ago

So apparently, you have played the game. You've been through multiplayer so you know a little something about the game.
Excuse me...but don't you people ever read before you talk?

Meresin6570d ago

I'm getting extremely irritated by all the previews saying that the multiplayer doesn't look that great for that very reason. They've been told by Insomniac that the models aren't in yet, yet they continue to spew crap like that. It's very frustrating.

I can't help wondering if these smaller sites aren't getting second- and third-hand information without ever seeing the game, because *I* know that the new models aren't in yet, and I didn't get a hands-on preview. Maybe these people should listen to The Full Moon Show. :P

micro_invader6570d ago

That's true but there will be instances when every squad from each team will be assigned to a single objective in the map, can you imagine that?

EPIC CHAOS!

SlyGuy6570d ago

Warhawk does an EXCELLENT job at "managed chaos", i.e. managing large battles.

I can easily see Warhawk 2 doing >60 online multiplayer.

shazam6569d ago

you do realize that rfom1 didnt have any texture streaming at all dont you? and r&cf:tod is the same engine and DOES have texture streaming.

what im saying is that rfom2 has at least the graphical features of r&cf:tod and probably more.

so tell me why do you think they would downgrade their engine?

unfortunately you are wrong.

have a great day and i love you very much but not really.

Sunny_D6569d ago

i think the psn is more powerful than xbl by servers and data they can handle. while xbl has the features.

Oh so no one minds Tom Games reviewing Resistance then huh? Funny.

Anyway, If like me you love FPS, and you love playing as a team/clan, Resistance 2 is one must have game.

Wildarmsjecht6570d ago

Im like you, and hope to see you there, either on my team, or against, i'll be sure to lob a friendly grenade.

thewhoopimen6570d ago

Rob Wright is undoubtedly a dyed-in-the-wool 360/PC fan.

Look at his one-off on Resistance, "While Resistance featured the same kind of generic shooter mechanics and human vs. aliens"

The guy clearly never played the game long enough to realize that one of the biggest things about RFOM was the incredible weapons array available. The game clearly had major creativity in this regard.

Not to mention his comparison of Killzone2, where he equates the quality to COD4... laughable really.

Wildarmsjecht6570d ago

Seriously, some of you guys posting here with nonsense like Frontline this, Huxley that really..REALLY need to get some rest. And medication.

As for you Kev, I have yet to get into any match whether it be COD4, GTA4, Warhawk, MGO beta(when it was active), or UT3 without having alot of people talking. When I played COD religiously I had to turn my mic off sometimes to let it charge on my laptop. And I wasn't the only one. That idea that no one has a mic on the ps3, is based off an ignorant assumption, sorry to say.

Video Game Franchises in Danger of Being Forgotten

The gaming industry moves at such a pace that it’s not surprising we’ve seen countless franchises fall into obscurity over the years.

Im surprised that a game with a heritage of Medal of Honor is in this list.

cthulhucultist553d ago

There is a rumour that Driver 1 & 2 remasters will be released for Switch and presumably for other systems as well.

https://www.gamingbible.com...

Not sure however whether this results into new games in the near future.

HellspawnPR1981553d ago

Ninja Gaiden? Splinter Cell? Tenchu? Virtua Fighter? Killer Instinct? Killzone?

DefenderOfDoom2553d ago

I would very much enjoy
a new dedicated single player Killzone campaign. With a fun multi-player.

cthulhucultist553d ago

Tenchu and Killer Instict would be great indeed!

Unfortunately new Killzone game does not seem to be in the works

Virtua Fighter is going to receive a new entry!

https://www.dualshockers.co...

Splinter Cell is likely to be one of the remasters launching next year (not sure whether this has to do anything with the remake previously announced)

https://toronto.ubisoft.com...

HellspawnPR1981553d ago

Yeah, read the news about a new Virtua Fighter and I am so ready for it. Splinter Cell at this point I don't believe anything Ubisoft says plus I don't think modern day Ubisoft can make a decent stealth game. They will likely fuck it up.

Inverno553d ago

Basically everything at this point as companies have no concern with preservation.

Ranking the Resistance Games From Worst To Best

While it's been on ice for as long as it was around, the Resistance franchise has no shortage of quality.

My take:

Single player
3, 2, 1

Multiplayer
3, 1, 2

Overall
3, 2, 1

I beat the lengthy single player in 1 multiple times and spent hours in the online too. Plus 1 featured my home town! Special mention to the audio design in 1: playing that with surround headphones blew me away.

Note: I have the platinum for Resistance 2.

Eidolon1475d ago

Resistance 1 MP will always be my favorite. Call it nostalgia or whatever, but that was my jam, felt more balance, natural.

Miraak82 1474d ago

i have the platinium too , 10k kills in online ranked matches was no joke . Took me 3-4 months straight grinding but it was fun . To put it in perspective you only got like 25 kills per match if you were 1st place every match that's at Least 400 matches in 1st

Sciurus_vulgaris1476d ago

I only played the 3 main Resistance titles. My ranking would be;
1. Resistance 3
2. Resistance: Fall of Man
3. Resistance 2

GoodGuy091476d ago

Man I loved 3's campaign. Another gem stuck on the ps3 and who knows if insomniac will go back to the franchise.

fr0sty1475d ago

Resistance, Warhawk, MAG, Motorstorm, there's so many first party gems on PS3 that Sony has just left to die...

P_Bomb1475d ago

Never played Burning Skies but I still have Retribution.

monkey6021475d ago

Burning Skies was about 3 hours long and rather inconsequential. You haven't missed anything

porkChop1475d ago

Honestly, Burning Skies was shit. There's no two ways about it. At first I thought it looked terrible, then I second guessed myself. Big mistake.

darthv721474d ago

Retribution has this really cool feature where you could use a PS3 to link a controller to it and play. So if you had a 2000 or 3000 hooked to a tv, you can use a real controller. All of this predates the PSP Go's ability to sync a sixaxis to it via bluetooth.

Yui_Suzumiya1475d ago

Resistance 3 was shocking and brilliant. Loved it.

Why Resistance Was So Incredible

While the studio is best known for Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet, and Clank, and Spider-Man back on the PS3 the studio broke from creating platformers and made one of the highest regarded science-fiction first-person shooters of all time. This was Resistance and it remains one of Sony's most acclaimed and dormant franchises.

Really wish Insomniac would bring back Resistance!

darthv721831d ago

Agreed. Until they do a new entry, I'd love to get the two portable games remade into console versions. Maybe in a nice compilation with the mainline titles.

monkey6021831d ago

Burning Skies wasn't a great game.
It was only a couple of hours long and there was nothing memorable about it.

I'd love a new entry

darthv721830d ago

^monkey, hence why it should be remade into a better version.

SullysCigar1832d ago

Resistance 3's campaign was gorgeous for the time - and an awesome game to boot.

monkey6021831d ago

I remember being put off by it because McHale wasn't the MC but it turned out to be my favourite campaign

CBaoth1831d ago

by and large though the Resistance IP featured many protagonists (4 altogether I think if you include the portables). One of the reasons I enjoyed it was not being shackled to individual story arcs. Very rare for a major franchise.

Army_of_Darkness1830d ago

My favorite resistance game as well! It seriously had creepy, scary a$$ moments bro! It made me want an action horror game from insomniac!

Mr_cheese1830d ago

Remember playing this through online co op with the move controller and gun attachment! What a game!

BlackIceJoe1831d ago

I've said in the past I'd like to see this series return and have it take place years later, like in the present.

I'll give you an example if I'm not mistaken the last game ended in the 50s, so if it was to take place some time in the 2020s you'd have an opportunity to see how the world changed after the fall of Chimera and all the new technology that came out of that war.

Just like in our universe we all know WW2 happened, but we never experienced it, so if the next Resistance game takes place years later so too would people in that universe know a war look place against the Chimera, they just wouldn't know what it really was like.

So getting to see how that universe would respond to the Chimera reemerging would be interesting.

Imagine a little kid talking with his grandfather about the war and the kid just thinks it was just a made up bed time horror story and what was said was worse than what really took place, but now that the Chimera come back the kid will find out why years later the old timer adults were still waiting for the Chimera to return.

I think there is great potential for this series still and I really believe the best way forward for Resistance is make it have a time jump too.

So hopefully this series will return.

Dragonopolis1830d ago

Great Idea. I'd play that version.

Resistance was a great game and of all the remasters.... I would play a great remastered version of resistance series as well

waverider1831d ago

I was blown away when i played for the first time Resistance on the PS3. Great Game. Also liked very much an played for hundred of hours the Co-op of R2. The SP campaign of R3 is also excelent. I really hope that Sony and Insomniac annouced the Remaster of the Series and a new chapter. They got story to do that.

Jambola121831d ago

Resistance 2 was one of the first few games i played on ps3 and I loved it, would definitely finish that again :D

Chevalier1831d ago

I loved all the Resistance games. But part 2 online was amazing. The Marksmen for the Spec Ops type class when it was fully upgraded was such an amazing weapon. Oh man I wish they release all the games again and let us play part 2 online again.
