Why Japan Was Surpassed By Western Devs

This article collects comments from numerous Japanese developers that have gone on record to say that Japan has fallen behind Western developers recently. The author asserts that because Japanese gamers don't like guns, they never embraced FPS games. And since FPS games pushed graphics technology, the Japanese missed out on the graphical revolution of the mid nineties for cultural reasons. Now as more and more PC devs are switching to consoles, Japanese devs, who have little experience with PC gaming, struggle to compete.

The article cites several Japanese developers' criticisms of Japanese trends in game design, but ends on a positive note by showing how Hideo Kojima's latest game, Metal Gear Solid 4 will incorporate many of the technologies that have made Western games successful, offering a ray of hope for fans of Japanese game design.

Kojima is probably only Japanese developer that respect and admires western ways when it comes to games. This is why MGS4 is getting so much attention here in west. I talked to many gamers and i know at least 10 people that never played old MGS games because of horrid camera angles but now they are going to play MGS4. 3 of them will buy PS3 because of it (and resistance 2 lol).

theKiller6576d ago

first look at the popular western games, then see the cash-caw games then see there level at graphics, i respect the western devs because they keep on developing new engines and new games while japs dev dont spend enough money on their games, just name me any jap game for this new gen that is pushing the hardware of any of the consoles ps3/360?? they r somehow very closed minded and mostly making games for jap's people and dont care about the world, i love JRPG but nothing till now on ps3 and just 1 or 2 on 360 which been 3 years in the market, they are keeping making ps2 level games, square enix realizing that but still didnt take an action yet, FF13 is still a long way to come! the jap devs nowadays is at the level of ps2 and nintendo style of games!!

mikeslemonade6576d ago (Edited 6576d ago )

Why western games has seemed to be better lately is inherent to the 360 launching a year earlier. 360 is a western platform, and the Wii and PS3 are eastern at its core. Therefore 360 launching earlier means the western games had to finish earlier.

Many of the most anticipated western games have already been released where as the eastern games have just gotten started. For example Halo 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Resistance, Uncharted, Gears of War all have been released. The eastern games have barely gotten here with Gran Turismo being the only highly anticipated next gen games to make an introduction. All this only creates an illusion that western has surpassed eastern developers.

And the writers must have forgotten about the PSP and DS which are the true leading sellers in the gameing industry. And in the last few years i can argue that western gaming has seen no growth with the 360 just doing barely better than the original xbox and the PC sales have fallen greatly where as DS, PSP, PS2, and Wii have all done better than expected.

Both have ups and downs. Westerners all have idiot proof un individual controls and camera schemes. Yea i love how easy and intuitive COD4 is but i dont want all my games feeling the same.

I havent even played a next gen Eastern game yet...are there even that many out?? seems like most of them are in the works at the moment.

Japan is still king of the story line in my eyes.

Because Itagaki gives bad example to all asain developers

Asurastrike6577d ago

Itagaki really needs to update his game style. Save points, and no continues are so 90's.

CRIMS0N_W0LF6577d ago

its not his game style.

Let him do useless boob games but the problem is

HIS ATTITUDE

socomnick6577d ago

I actually like his attitude. His attitude differentiates him from other Japanese developers. It also works for Western developers look at cliffy b .

Kleptic6576d ago (Edited 6576d ago )

^^what?...Cliffy B. is nothing like him...cliff just gets drunk all the time and takes playmates for 'rides' in his lambo...Itgaki is yet another japanese dev that says how 'the japanese are very modest' (Kojima is occasionally guilty of doing the same thing) then turning around and claiming no game is even in the same league as his own...

sorry...NG,NGB, and NG sigma were great...NG 2 will be great...but Dead or Alive and all the other sexual sports games that spun out of that franchise are next to worthless...when he criticizes other action games (namely Heavenly Sword for having God of War inspired mini-games) all he could say was how much better NG was...and yeah, his stuff doesn't show any modern action innovation...its just a fighting game where you fight random enemies in full environments rather than in an arena...thats not a bad thing...but the save system...the inventory...and everything else was out-dated 2 generations ago...

I have a lot of respect for Kojima. Not only cause of how great MGS is, but how much effort he takes into making his games. He has a very open mind. He is not an orthodox-Japanese game developer. He understands and accepts the good parts of the Japanese as well as the western tradition.

MGS series is probably the only Japanese game series I like...

ruibing6576d ago

Yeah, I think Japanese developers are simply more humble.

OoLegendoO6577d ago

Just wait until FF 13 comes out = )

devilhunterx6577d ago

Not all western developers are great either. Majority of the shovelware are made by western developers. Barbie Horse adventure anyone?

Konami Delists Some Metal Gear Games From Digital Stores Without Warning

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD have been delisted from digital stores without warning.

cloganart93d ago

I mean, it makes sense. With Vol.2 coming and all that

Commentby93d ago

Stupid headline. Should state that they are being updated or discontinued. This makes the crazy people that only read headlines think it some kind of conspiracy to take away peoples already purchased games.

jjb198193d ago

If you want to all of a sudden own them now and haven't played them yet because a remastered is coming out, shame on you. I can't believe people are complaining about this 15 years later when it was bound to happen anyway. "A new remaster is out, quick, I'd better buy the original from the shop."

gigoran892d ago

Gamers: "Physical? who needs physical? everyone knows that digital online games are the future. stop living in the past. we don't need no stinking disc drive"

Same gamers: "How dare the delist a digital game that I own!!!!"

computeSci92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

And? What is your point?

Same gamers: "How dare the retailers to delist (quit selling) a physical game that I own!!!!"

I think you just read the headline and don't know how dilisting works with Sony. It's common knowledge that:

"Players who already bought the games will still have them in their library and can download and play them as usual."

So again, what is your point?

Playing it right now looks amazing! :D
so much fun, i hope they make a vr mod for crysis 2 / 3 too!

DivineHand125482d ago

This is amazing. This is the direction VR should go in to boost adoption. Since I have beaten every Crysis except 1, this is now a good excuse to correct that problem.

Crytek Wanted Crysis To Be "Future-Proof"

According to Crytek CEO Cervat Yerli, "I want[ed] to make sure Crysis does not age, that [it] is future proofed, meaning that if I played it three years from now, it should look better than today." Yerli and the team designed Crysis' highest graphical settings for the PC hardware of 2010 and beyond.

While Crytek has officially announced Crysis 4 is in development, nothing new has surfaced. For now, gamers' only way to scratch that itch is to play the Crysis Remastered Trilogy available on PC and consoles.

OG 2007 Crysis (not the remastered weirdo), is & will forever be a legend amongst the PC community.

PrinceOfAnger487d ago

This video will always be impressive to me, even for years to come. Some things here are better than games we have today, OG crysis is the best version!

RaidenBlack487d ago

OG Crysis physics, man ... amazing! Thanks for the reminder!

PrinceOfAnger486d ago (Edited 486d ago )

Looks really nice with VR mod too

FinalFantasyFanatic487d ago

I'm still shocked that it looks as good as it does today, puts some modern games to shame.

Profchaos486d ago

I thought the remaster was fine tbh some rough edges at launch but after some patches it's decent

isarai487d ago

I mean the lighting and physics still hold up extremely well. I still revisit it from time to time.

RedDeadLB487d ago

That CPU performance thing is preventing it.

isarai486d ago

Yeah unfortunately Crystek's decision to bet on the linear progression of clock speed in CPUs was derailed by the unforseen shift towards multicore CPUs. It just wasn't built with that in mind because that wasn't even in the conversation at the moment

DivineHand125487d ago

I remember when I tried to play Crysis with my Intel Pentium Dual core E2200 @2.2GHz , 4GB ram and GeForce 9400gt. I was a kid back then and that was the best I could do. I would get about 15 to 20 fps. When I over clocked the CPU to 2.8GHz I would get about 40fps. The experience wasn't good at all and it was the only PC game I could not run back then unless and put the settings on low. At that point the game went from cutting edge graphics to PS2 graphics. To this day I haven't completed the OG Crysis. I was able to complete Crysis 2 and 3 after building a new PC when I got my first job.

HyperMoused486d ago

Never played it, worth a try you think?

Profchaos486d ago (Edited 486d ago )

Worth a try just because it's the only game that lets you pick up a turtle on the beach and throw it at enemy soldiers that should have been a back of the box feature.

But nah seriously unless you're nostalgic for it I'm not sure if it will hold up
