Microsoft Needs to 'Diskinect'

FRONTBURNR Writes: "The Kinect has been forcefully pushed on gamers for a few years now. In 2010, the Kinect released to widespread critical uncertainty. Thoughts of endless possibilities of complete body motion and voice control had consumers catching a glimpse of the future of gaming. That was, until you got your hands on one."

""The Kinect has been forcefully pushed on gamers for a few years now." correction...it is only the XB1 that comes standard with a kinect unit. 360 units are available by choice. The very nature of that opening line is purely out of context.

Its okay, we get it that there are many who dislike the move of Ms to include a kinect in every xb1 box. but that is their choice just as it is the consumers choice not to buy.

To proclaim something has been forced upon you is just sad. You are free to buy what you like and in doing so there are consequences after the fact, but prior to buying you are still presented with.....choice.

The logic (or lack of) is simply staggering these days more than any other. Maybe this writer should follow up this post with one titled "Sony needs to turn the lights out" in relation to always on light bar on the DS4.

Just so this author is being fair towards criticizing the efforts of both parties.

What I love hearing is people claiming "get rid of Kinect and get the price the same as the PS4 and then it will sell".

So get rid of one of the major differentiation of the two systems, reduce your price to the same as the PS4 which by all accounts when comparing just memory and GPU is a notch above... and that move is what will get you to buy an Xbox One over a PS4? That is probably the worst move they could make.

MS just needs to focus on knocking the price as is down...whether its by permanently including a AAA game, and maybe a 2nd digital arcade one too in the box. So when at the register the price tag on check out is roughly the same. Then MS can make an argument that for the same price you are getting 'more' for your dollar with inclusion of Kinect which the PS4 doesn't offer in the box and by all accounts the PS4 eye is inferior.

They have been doing a better job. They now have Titanfall and Forza 5 bundles. I am not completely against removing the Kinect completely. It just seems as if they are not using it for the games just yet. For me, I just cannot get the voice controls to work well enough to ditch a controller. Not yet anyway.

Bernlock4430d ago

My god ive been screaming that point forever. Why would they take it out! The whole console is built around it and for it. Its what seperates it and the ps4! Worst mistake ever would be to get rid of it

curtis924430d ago (Edited 4430d ago )

I think they're saying to focus on the games and not force a gimmicky camera in the box that adds cost. Majority of the people buying an xb1 because of Kinect are not the ones supporting the gaming industry. People want games and a system that focuses on games. Proof: PS4 sales.

Price drop = good. Kinect being an OPTION = good. Games = good.

Some of you all will just buy whatever they throw in the box at whatever price they tack on.

bleedsoe9mm4430d ago (Edited 4430d ago )

a kinectless xb1 is just similar yet less powerful system than the ps4 , it would need to be significantly cheaper price for it to be competitive . i think its much more likely you'll see a kinect included bundled with games closer to the ps4 price even if MS has to eat the cost until hardware prices equals the price drop .

Fireseed4430d ago

They have gone on record to say dropping the Kinect would be more like a 175$ drop, not 100 like most people believe.

Allsystemgamer4430d ago

I would choose one over ps4 bit losing kinect would secure an eventual sale for me.

IAmSovereign4430d ago

Major differentiation that isn't wanted. Titanfall doesn't use kinect in anyway. You mean to tell me it is one of their most valuable features when their supposed killer app doesn't utilize it at all?

They cannot knock the price down as it stands. Even if they got rid of the Kinect they still have a more expensive API than PS4. Plain and simple even without the Kinect there isn't much wiggle room. The Xbox One is a perfect example of making poor choices early in development. Slow DDR3 ram. Clunky and expensive API that amounts to more memory consumption than PS4.

Also, for all you can say about the PS4 eye, at least they don't force it on the consumer, and try to hail it as the next step in gaming.

Aside from the 360's UI being designed more with the Kinect in mind. The lengths MS went to introduce it to the public. Now with the XB1 MS has gone so far as to design the console around it.

And don't forget, if not for raised complaints Kinect would indeed be required to just to use the XB1. For anything.

Even though such policies were reversed there effects are going to easily forgotten.

Rchillis4430d ago

My apologies if it seems as though I am being biased towards any specific platform or company. I have no allegiances to any manufacturer. I love things about the Xbox One, PS4 and even the Wii U. One thing that bugs me about the PS4 is the inferior UI to Xbox One, and the lack of "must have" exclusive launch titles. At this point, Microsoft has the best "console" on the market, as their are better games and a Titanfall release incoming soon.

As for the forced comment, it is absolutely forced. For anyone that wants to play Titanfall, or Halo, or Ryse or any other Microsoft exclusive, they must buy a Kinect. Sure, you have the option to NOT purchase the machine, but you have to weigh the pros and cons of making that decision. Do you spend the extra money the Kinect conceivably costs and play the games you want, or do you skip the whole experience and go with something else that might not have the exact games you want to play. I am not implying that everyone has to "deal with it" and that MS will physically make you purchase a Kinect, I was simply stating that if you want to play Xbox One games, you will be buying a Kinect.

darthv724430d ago

You forget that you also have the option to unplug the kinect if you dont want to use it.

If the game requires the use of the kinect are you again going to impose the belief that you are "forced" to use it?

As it is, usually when something is required you are well aware of that requirement and have taken the steps needed in order to play it.

Nobody goes out and buys a move 'only' or kinect 'only' game and not have the appropriate piece of hardware to play it. That would be sad on their part.

Kinect with each XB1 implies the total package as opposed to add-ons that usually get support after the fact or sometimes not at all.

Part of me really believes that sony had every intention to include their PS4 eye with each PS4 simply on the basis of how they did their initial presentation (socially focused showing the camera) as well as the inclusion of the move inspired light bar on the standard packin controller.

MightyNoX4430d ago

@darthv72: A little early for my daily dosage of Sony Too!(tm) spew but eh...I'll take it.

darthv724430d ago (Edited 4430d ago )

@mighty, would there have been anything wrong if sony did it too?

mochachino4430d ago

PS4 already has more and better exclusives than xone imo

Don't forget indie games.

And several of the best games last gen were Playstation exclusives. All MS does is market their games a lot better so maybe there's more excitement around games like Halo and Gears but bigger marketing budget doesn't mean the games are better.

beebap4430d ago

UI is inferior on ps4 is simply not true it a matter of preferance. Like all ui it down to what the user is used to and ease of use. Also dont like advertising on my dashboard so that makes me not want to use xbox. But most importantly there is no lack of must have games for ps4 I havent stopped playing the ps4 since launch but that all my opinion. But dont be hypocritical were are the MUST HAVE exclusive games for kinect then justify having to pay for if you want xbox games

"Part of me really believes that sony had every intention to include their PS4 eye with each PS4"

More than likely, but then they managed to tell where the wind was blowing and make it an option which seems to be paying off for them.

Unlike their competition, who had the reaction to rumors and still didn't make any changes until almost immediately after they had made official commitment.

@Rchillis:
In what way do you need Kinect for Titanfall?

darthv724430d ago

i just hate to see a good idea in a peripheral go unappreciated.

Rchillis4430d ago

I was talking more along the lines of using the Twitch integration with Titanfall. Twitch could do the Kinect a world of good.

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ4430d ago

I agree, At first I did not like the Kinect Idea and could not stand it for 360, but Now that I use it all the time, I want nothing more then MS to invest more into it as long as they dont focus on Full on kinect games!

3-4-54430d ago (Edited 4430d ago )

Spark uses Kinect in the way it was meant to be used. It's really the only game though.

I don't think Microsoft REALIZES this yet though.

Why? Kinect has the most potential for innovation in games out of Sony and Nintendo and Microsoft

The games can have different gameplay experiences and not just more of the same once they play around with the tech more and get more creative

Rchillis4430d ago

I completely agree. But where are these games! Make me want to use the Kinect. Pushing out Sports and Dance games is not going to cut it forever, and never will for the hardcore, non casual market.

curtis924430d ago

different gameplay experiences DO NOT equal better gameplay experiences. There's a reason we still have 4 tires and a steering wheel on our cars. Because it effing works the best.

GreenRanger4430d ago

I sold my Kinect to Hulk Hogan.

Bernlock4430d ago

I'm really opening people using project spark can show us what the kinnect can really do. Should be interesting for sure!
