Downloadable Content: Ye or Ne?

Scrawl: "Alright, so you've just purchased this awesome game you've been waiting for, for quite a long time. You're playing it, and you're having the time of your life (or it seems like). After a while, you decide to take a break. You go check out what's new on the PLAYSTATION Store, and you see something that strikes you a bit "weird". There's already Downloadable Content for the game that just that you were recently enjoying. Now, one can't help but wonder, why would there be Downloadable Content for a game that just came out?"

1) worthwile
- something that enhances the gameplay, or adds a new perspective

2) make an effort
- it has to definitely have creativity and show it wasn't a quick cash in. shivering isles? good. new story in lost odyssey? fine. shirt? it better look freaking amazing.

3) priced fairly
- EA....i'm looking at you.

4) don't make us pay for stuff already on the disc
- again, a good giveaway that it was already on the disc is it takes a few seconds to download from the store even though its supposedly 5MB plus. case in point, ace combat 6.

5) Please give a certain time frame to release DLC
- DLC one to two months after retail is fair. DLC a week after retail is suspicious. DLC a day after release is just plain wrong.

Cough Cough*** Ace Combat 6 Cough Cough

Seriously though, there were new planes available for purchase when I bought the game on release. That's just sickening.

Imallvol76584d ago

I have NEVER bought any DLC except for rock band tracks and I have a PS3 and 360. I believe that every developer should make a game under the impression that DLC doesn't exist. Only after it is released should they think about DLC. And stuff like shirts and armor should be free. I'm also fine with the pay now or wait and get free later method.

But I'm looking at you MS. Pay money for THEMES? and GAMERPICS? GIVE ME A BREAK. I get to use all my free pics and free themes and backgrounds on PS3.

v1c1ous6584d ago

the thing is, since xbox live came before PSN, and the first few themes/pics had some price to it, every company got the idea "hey, i guess charging is the norm"

the fact that its free on PSN is an afterthought on sony's part trying to one-up XBL.

Imallvol76584d ago

ok then . . . . does that make paying for themes and pics any more relevant or acceptable? I hate how people just accept things. Vote with your wallet and your voice. It doesn't matter if your a PS3, Wii, or 360 fan. Being cheated on any console screws with all gamers.

Seraphim6584d ago

indeed, themes and gamerpics should not be priced imo. I'm already using a product and advertising it across XBL and PSN. Even something simple like if you own the game you can access the gamer pics for free. Say a code that comes with the game so you can plug it in and get the gamer pics for that game for free. That way people renting it wouldn't be able to access the pics for free... Themes on the 360 I'm unimpressed with while on the PS3 the themes come w/ custom icons, nice. With the 360 I actually prefer the default theme w/ carbon/black blades. The one up the 360 does have in paying for gamer pics is the quality, and amount of pics to choose from. Playstation offers a slim number of gamer pics and they aren't nearly as sharp or nice as what's offered on the 360. Though a relatively small price I haven't broken down and bought any gamer pics and I doubt I will.

As others have pointed out...

Charging for content already on a disc is A big no-no.

Releasing DLC a day to a week w/in release is a big no-no.

Also price is a huge factor.

I'm not a fan of trivial content such as extra vehicles, costumes, and whatever else garbage they throw out there. Those goodies in my mind should be tossed to gamers for free. Perhaps as a token for their support. Map packs, tracks, extra story content is all fine by me. But again price is a huge factor. What am I getting for my extra $5-10? Also, releasing DLC TOO long after a games release is surely something I'll pass up. But I'm also the type of person who'll sit down and beat a game w/in 2 days to 2 weeks and be done with it. Normally 2-7 days. Occasionally going back and playing it again either right away or 1-2 years down the road if it's that good, and I have the spare time between new releases...

reason being I cant see no good that will come from downloading content since there is Blu-ray on a disk for the playstation users. How can you justify telling someone to pay $ 60 dollars of your hard earned money and then turn around and say surprise here is some DLC for you it's just 1.99 for each track (Motor storm) I thought that was unfair but I am looking at a user perspective. The only way I would consider download content is if it's free Lets look at a developer perspective "I want interest for this development" if the game cost 20 million and you are reaching your mark then you should release the dlc for free or do what Halo 2 did and charge for x amount of months then allow it to be free which seems fair to me.

SKUD6584d ago (Edited 6584d ago )

Is just another way of nickel and diming the gamer. Paying 60+ bucks just isnt enough anymore.

dktxx26584d ago

DLC is the worst thing to happen to gaming ever. If im gonna pay 60 bucks for a game, it better have blood, sweat, and tears from every single person who worked on it. and If they do make dlc, it better not be out the day after release. If its halfassed, hell if its 1/4assed, im not a happey gamer.
