Xbox One Eighty: us vs them

10 months after the reveal of the Xbox One, some still think everyone overreacted and didn’t listen. Well, we did listen – they just didn’t say anything.

I agree with everything he says except the last paragraph.

I feel this topic has been Microsoft's (and a great many company's) dream for a long time. I do feel that the anti consumer policies are a lingering feeling at the top end of Microsoft.

That's why, unlike the author, I cannot justify titanfall as a reason to own their system.

Do us a favor, don't so easily forget that they tried to bone us... make them (and not Respawn/ea) win us back... are we that easy? I won't put out on the first date...Lol..

N2NOther4458d ago

Thanks for for reading. It's not just Titanfall that is making me buy the system. But rather it's the first game that is making me pull the trigger on it. As I said in the article, I do love the Xbox brand and has they not reversed their policies, I would be owning only a PS4 this generation.

So technically, I'm putting out on the second date;)

urwifeminder4459d ago

Was buying regardless nothing would have stopped me.

Fireseed4459d ago

Same here. Even if it required a bone marrow transfusion to activate the allure of KI was too strong.

RollinThunder4459d ago

I applaud your faith, sir. It totally shocked me, I was eating lunch at work, checking the live feeds and almost **** a brick. Glad they reversed it, personally.

Bathyj4459d ago (Edited 4459d ago )

Sorry, wrong post.

Applejack4459d ago

A really detailed and well written article with good points here and there but here are a few points that I would like to bring out at the end of the article.

"they undid years of engineering, planning and dealing in a matter of days. Why? Because of internet “hissy fits?” I guess we will never know exactly why, but if I had to make an educated guess, they saw really poor pre-order numbers after E3 and knew that in order to get things back on track for their needed bottom line, they needed to act fast".

That's what it basically boils down to, their pre-order numbers were horrible and they knew the only way to bring them back up was to get rid of their policies that gamers didn't want any part of. Nothing more, nothing less.

"And here is the best part. We all have options. Digital only folks can go that route and fast swap games to their heart’s content. And folks like myself can buy and sell our used games, just like we should have always been able to".

And that is how it should be, I couldn't be happier that it turned out this way and I'm sure, in someways, Microsoft is also happy because their console is now the faster selling Xbox iteration with over 3.5 million sold so far.

N2NOther4459d ago

Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment!

I like the way you think!

;)

Applejack4458d ago

No problem, I really appreciate that. Just keep writing articles like this and I will no doubt read them.

N2NOther4458d ago

Very cool. Keep your eyes peeled. I am gestating on one regarding the supposed "all-digital" future. Like us on Facebook and you'll get all of our updates!

Corporations need to make money. More money every year, and when a market becomes saturated, they have to think of new ways to make money. Nickel and Diming, decreasing volume at the same or increased price.

I think part of what Microsoft was worried about was with the consoles ps3 and 360, were at the about the same numbers as PS2 owners and original xbox and gamecube. So the total numbers of systems out there had not increased dramatically just more divided and thus the market was saturated. Taking in phone games and whatnot they did not expect to sell as many consoles, not because of failure but because consumers might not be as interested. So they came up with a way to control more and manage more money for the company despite lower total consoles sold.

SpinalRemains1384459d ago (Edited 4459d ago )

They need to make money. Innovate, not ass rape.

That's the difference here.

Let your profits come as the result of your products, not your policies.

creatchee4459d ago

I said it before and I'll say it again - Microsoft never meant to declare war on consumers. They were attempting to kill the second hand market, namely GameStop and the like. To a point, I agreed with that cause - GameStop's used games practices are disgusting in terms of buy values vs trade values and the constant pushing of used vs mew, which does not reimburse publishers and developers for their investment and work.

All that said, gamers felt they would have suffered, fought the changes vocally and got Microsoft to rethink their strategy. But we're still in a problematic time. GameStop operates as usual, so we end up dealing with incomplete games, constant DLC and microtransactions, and yearly releases. I'm not saying it wouldn't happen with the old system, but I almost feel like it happens more BECAUSE we didn't give it a try. Who knows?

DualWielding4459d ago

Actually Microsoft's system would have helped gamestop... gamestop was certainly gonna be the 'authorized retailer" the policy referred to...... they were gonna kill people selling games on their own through ebay, gamestops main competition

Prime1574458d ago (Edited 4458d ago )

I agree wholeheartedly with ferthepoet. It was more of an attack on loaning your games, or getting your money back.

The fact is that gs would still be around, but would have paid ms for the rights to resale. Then, after the contract with Microsoft to resale (and users unable to eBay, loan, or sell directly to friend) they would decrease the amount they offered to the people who sold their games to gamestop in order to keep profits up.

Or, gamestop would decrease from employees, who already make dick there and get Shit on more than consumers know. I feel sorry for the kids trying to get hired there knowing what i know.

As an employee of gamestop for two years, I think they have crappy business practices (just like Microsoft). The Xenoblades exclusive sales taking the preowned price up to $90 while tens of thousands of copies were stored in warehouses... ugh, it angers me to this day. That was a part time job I thought I would enjoy... I made them lots of money. So yes, I know more about them, first-hand, than you do. However, that is for another topic and time.

The "authorized retailers" issue goes deep, and it's a disgrace to us as gamers.

Godmars2904459d ago

While they need to make money year over year, they don't need to make *more*. Not at the cost of consumers, much less workers.

That's the problem with the corporate mindset: the higher up the ladder the less regard is given to those lower.

Prime1574458d ago (Edited 4458d ago )

Thank you, it's impossible to always have exponential growth unless you start "stealing" or, more specifically, dwindling other people's/companies income/profits.

There is only a finite amount of wealth..one person/corporation can only own up to 100%, there no more than that. Recessions/growth is only a transference of that sum of the whole of wealth.

Well said to you.

SpinalRemains1384459d ago (Edited 4459d ago )

Its is never ever OK to give corporations more power over us than they already have. MS disgusting policies had political ramifications and it really is a serious matter. How anyone with a brain could defend those policies, makes me want to puke!

They already own our government here in the US. I would at least enjoy it if they stay the hell out of my videogame machine.

Prime1574458d ago

I agree fully with you. However, I'm adding this disclaimer that I might, MIGHT sound like I'm not, since you don't know me beyond the text and screen and i investment how what saying might contradictory.

It's funny how the money hungry businesses overshadow the good. Where does the point of providing a service or product get taken over by the acquiescence of accumulating money and wealth?

Yes, I think there are great corporations out there, but most, if not all, reach a point where foundation cracks and loses it's original concept. That usually happens when a company gets bought out, imo.

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose21d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE21d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername20d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy21d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde21d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8621d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8621d ago (Edited 21d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300021d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle21d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
