Next-Gen Face-Off: Thief

Digital foundry :

"If you've just bought a next-gen console, this Thief reboot is likely not your best choice for showing off its strengths. Visually, the PS4 should be the front-runner given its 1080p presentation, but through the virtues of effective anti-aliasing, the 900p frame-buffer used on Xbox One holds its own in practice. However, the PS4's weaker texture filtering does factor into the comparison more visibly, with assets appearing blurrier than they should at a distance, and asset pop-in proving slightly more evident. Given that all other settings are a match between next-gen platforms, the Xbox One release - surprisingly - stacks up favourable against a maxed-out PC playthrough.

Performance on PS4 and Xbox One counts as a bigger concern, and neither deserves any sort of recommendation here."

PS4 at 1080p lowest fps was 21fps
Xbox one at 900p lowest fps was 22fps
Frame rates are terrible on both consoles

Poor optimization most likely

Tempest3174454d ago

Agreed, but I feel better knowing that I can correctly interpret the framerates im seeing...commented the other day on a review claiming fps dropling to near single digits and was in the teens a lot...I stated it was running in the low to mid 20s, never dropping anywhere near that low. Ive been stoked for this article so I could see if I was right!

Blaze9294454d ago

the amount of excuses and reasons I see here are hilarious. Yet if PS4 won this time, comments would be very different.

But interesting comparison nonetheless. Seems PS4 taking the cake everytime is not as promised as everyone seems to think. Will be a very interesting generation.

dantesparda4450d ago

Hmm, so everyone is being sensible and reasonable and boom here comes you with the fanboy crap. What people are saying here is very legit. And you just wanna rub it in fanboy faces. This isnt a clear win for X1 and you know it. Its very arguable which version is really better and according to fanboys i thought the PS4 version had a worst framerate than the X1 because of its higher res? How'd that turn out?

Hard8times4454d ago

This dude really copied and paste my comment from the actual video LMAO

So PS4:
- Full 1080p
- Trilinear filtering
- Steadier framerate (>24 FPS)

Xbox One:
- 900p
- 16x anisotropic filtering
- drops to 20's

Yet the Xbox One > PS4, huh?
And lets be honest both next gen versions hardly look better then the current gen, something went wrong here

GarrusVakarian4454d ago (Edited 4454d ago )

They both suck. There are some things the X1 has that the PS4 does not and there are some things the PS4 has that the X1 does not.

http://abload.de/img/the_ga...

Parallax occlusion mapping on the cobbles on the road on the PS4, while X1 version has flat texture.

PS4 holds better framerate in the fight/gameplay scenes, X1 holds better framerate in cutscenes.

PS4 runs at a higher resolution, X1 has better texture streaming.

As i said, both versions suck. I would hate to be Eidos Montreal right now, this game is getting slaughtered in reviews and and exposed in analysis.

imt5584454d ago (Edited 4454d ago )

Nope, zeronhero. That's a texture streaming issue on PS4. PS4 has sharper textures despite streaming issue. Btw, PS4 version has some sort of tessellation, XBONE NOT!

Kayant4454d ago (Edited 4454d ago )

Not really. The same textures still appear after like two seconds. It doesn't have better textures. The only thing that is better on the XB1 is when looking at textures at a distance because of the better texture filtering.

Both of framerate drops in cut scenes
PS4 has a steadier framerate in gameplay especially the more demanding sections.
PS4 is @1080p

Both are not great. Hopefully they patch they game to fix these issues.

@zeronhero

Look here so what happen in the XB1 version --> http://abload.de/img/the_ga...

Anonagrog4454d ago (Edited 4454d ago )

@imt558,

The consoles don't use any tessellation in 'Thief' - it's only the pc version that does. Even if they did, as far as I'm aware the game only supports tessellation for smoothing, rather than for displacement mapping, so you wouldn't see the 3d effect on those cobbles. In this case it'll be parallax occlusion mapping (POM) you're observing.

imt5584454d ago

Well, dogdirt, KZ : SF has tessellation. Most noticeable in last chapter on walls.

Anonagrog4454d ago (Edited 4454d ago )

@imt558,

KZ:SF isn't Thief though, is it? Why bring up the technology used in another game?

As you've brought it up though, I have seen no mention of Guerrilla using tessellation of any variety in KZ:SF; not in their tech presentations, nor online anywhere. I very much doubt they went with displacement mapping instead of POM, especially when you consider how much they are doing in their rendering pipeline (see their tech presentation).

Find the mesh edge and see if the complex brick geometry you're referring to in the wall still looks like it's protruding at grazing angles. If they're using standard POM that's the best way of telling between the two.

POM:- http://www.hardware.fr/medi...

Displacement Mapping:- http://www.hardware.fr/medi...

Anonagrog4454d ago (Edited 4454d ago )

@imt558,

Well, from the little I can see in that first shot with all that DoF, it looks like a pretty standard use case for POM. Tessellating that would be unnecessary, especially as the grazing angle-edge issue with POM is avoided through the way the wall has been created.

The other two pics are the same (?) and the only thing in focus are the steps, so I'm not sure what you want me to look at. The stairs are just standard geometry that require minimal complexity. The small pebbles and stones on the ground could use POM. It's another ideal use case for it where tessellation wouldn't be beneficial, and all positive aspects of POM would be well suited with little chance of the negatives.

Anonagrog4454d ago (Edited 4454d ago )

I just wanted to add that by talking "tessellation" I am still referring to it's use for displacement mapping, not just tessellation on it's own.

Also, my use of "beneficial"! :P Of course displacement mapping is beneficial when it comes to image quality, I am just yet to see it used in any next-gen (current-gen) game for these sorts of scenes. Comparing the performance between the two methods isn't a clear-cut thing, but currently I would expect Parallax mapping/POM to be more common on the consoles right now. Hopefully that will change in the not-too-distant future.

You ignored some differences.

PS4:
1080p +
More texture and shadow pop-in. -
Trilinear filtering. -

XB1:
Better texture filtering (16x) +
Less pop-in. +
900p -

They stated that the resolution difference in this particular game isn't very noticeable. They also said the framerate is very juddery on both of them due to uneven frame pacing and this has by far the biggest affect on the perception of smoothness.

Also, the next gen versions look WAY better than the last gen versions.

Much higher resolution textures.
Better texture filtering.
Higher quality alpha effects like fog.
More alpha effects in general.
High quality depth of field (which is missing on last gen versions).
Real-time light shafts (missing on last gen versions).
Much higher quality shadows.
Higher resolutions.
Parallax occlusion mapping (missing on last gen versions).
Tessellation (also missing on last gen)

The PS4 and XB1 versions are head and shoulders above the last gen versions. All in all the PS4 and XB1 versions are pretty close and I'm sure it's a great game on either of them.

akaFullMetal4454d ago (Edited 4454d ago )

To bad they both have issues, I thought with this generation we wouldn't be having issues like these anymore. Especially going from 512mbs to 8 gigs on both consoles and having upgraded video cards, guess it still shows some developers are pressured in releasing subpar products. This needed to be delayed on both systems.

Yui_Suzumiya4454d ago

It'd been in development for so long that they were forced to slap together next gen versions without proper optimization.

Axios24454d ago

ROFL

If Digital Foundry gave the win to PS4 we would be inundated with comments like "Flawless Victory"

But because Digital Foundry gave X1 the nod, we are inudated with excuses.

GarrusVakarian4454d ago (Edited 4454d ago )

When facts are used as excuses, they are still facts. It doesn't make them any less true or any less credible.

Would you prefer people just ignore the facts and bury their heads in the sand? No thanks.

"If Digital Foundry gave the win to PS4 we would be inundated with comments like "Flawless Victory" "

Pure speculation. You can't say what people would say about this games victory based on comments of past games. I for one would still be saying "why the hell does the PS4 version run below 30fps at all, why does it not have decent AF"...regardless if it would have won or not.

Ju4454d ago (Edited 4454d ago )

If the written word doesn't really match the video, yeah, then I do have a little bit of an issue with their "analysis".

Thief - Taken From Us Too Soon

The Thief game series has had many ups-and-downs, and 2014's reboot showed a great deal of promise nearly a decade ago.

Notellin1017d ago

This would be such a great franchise to reboot. A darker game than Dishonored, but focused around stealth and large scale heists from an oppressive monarchy.

That's probably my dream game. I love immersive sims and stealth!

Noskypeno1017d ago

People say they hate forced stealth sections in games. But a game focused on stealth with good mechanics and level design feels refreshing from the guns blazing games which I also enjoy. I really enjoyed playing Splinter cell, a game that not many try to mimic today. Not too many games let you shoot lights out, or throw cans or bottles to distract guards. Sure there are games with stealth options like the new Wolfenstein but it doesn't feel necessary to play it that way. Hitman might be the only game that has that feeling, except for that Korean game that may or may not ever come out.

isarai1017d ago

You should try the Sniper Elite games, so good, especially with coop

Notellin1016d ago

Same here. I'm glad there are some other people who enjoy these types of games!

@isarai I tried Sniper Elite 5 and ended up really enjoying that one. Went back and played 4 as well!.

ModsDoBetter1017d ago (Edited 1017d ago )

The last one was a trainwreck and has been in the bargain bin since just after launch. If they bring it back, they need a massive change in direction.

Inverno1017d ago

only direction they should take is putting it in reverse and going back to what the originals did. I couldn't finish this game, and I made a choice to never play it again. I watched a video about the og Thief and Deus Ex games and the current AAA standard will forever hold back these games. These 2 games alone had already solved so many problems with modern gaming that I don't think they'll get a chance at something great unless they're made by a dev that actually give a damn.

monkey6021017d ago

Jesus the last installment sells at about 2 euro and even that is over paying for it. Absolutely diabolical game

SimpleSlave1017d ago

Ups and Down? More like Up, UP, Pot Hole, Free Fall into the Abyss...

Rutaprkl1017d ago

Thief Deadly Shadows remaster would be awesome.
