Strider Review -TechRaptor

Long ago, back in 1989, Capcom released a much beloved action arcade game known as Strider. It quickly gathered popularity and critcal acclaim and still remains talked about today, which brings us to today; Double Fine Studios has reworked the original Strider into the form of a Metroidvania game and while it is an absolute blast to play, it is sadly lacking elsewhere.

Ouch
I expect a 8/10 at least

orionone4458d ago

He gave the gameplay a 95. If you value gameplay over story in some instances and just want some old school fun, you won't be disappointed.

Dannycr4458d ago

Most action games back then didn't have a good story. The gameplay in this remake is excellent. Same with the exploration. Everytime you get a power up you feel like you can traverse faster and better through all the areas.

The boss fights are kinda easy though (i'm playing it on Hard mode)

I beat this game twice already. Going on my third play through to collect the remaining 28% of the trophies so I can Platinum. Once I do that I'm coming for this one guys #1 Completion time spot for I am sadly #23. This game is awesome and a deep story for this type of game is pointless. I just wish there were more bosses.

This game is an 8 or higher.. Just beat it & while its not perfect, its still awesome..

"Double Fine Studios" lol?! I think they meant Double Helix Games...

The one ninja forgotten

In the past two years, Ninja games seem to have made a comeback. ININ, Sega, Dotemu, and others have all thrown their names into the arena. Thus far, the quality of each company’s aforementioned games has been high from what we’ve been shown. And in the case of ININ and Dotemu, can literally play their offering as of the writing of this article. Right now, no matter which retro revival ninja franchise you favor, you’re guaranteed a quality game.

We're definitely long overdue for another Strider game.

lodossrage265d ago

The timing would have been perfect had a new Strider game came out now.

FACTUAL evidence265d ago

The only real ninja missing from today's gaming landscape is Rikimaru

Redgrave265d ago

The Tenchu crew must sneak again, Onikage's plans must again be foiled

lodossrage265d ago

Does Activision still have publishing rights to that?

telgou265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

You know who should get a remaster ( graphical recreation not remake, the gameplay is perfect) ? Goh the crow from Shinobido.
Shinobido is the metal gear solid of ninja games...

Some of us gamers still enjoy 2D games. The likes of UN Squadron, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Final Fight, Strider are all due sequels in 2D. Most of these games would probably run off the same engine. Go back to the 8 bit and 16 bit days and you could pull out a ton of 2D games due a sequel.

lodossrage265d ago

well UN Squadron would probably be the least likely to get a sequel since that's actually based on the old anime Area 88. The name was just changed to UN Squadron when it came west.

But then again, I could be wrong. Cobra is getting a new game

Dante's inferno... an excellent GoW inspired game. So sad the sequels will never be.

LoveSpuds1297d ago (Edited 1297d ago )

I recall enjoying it well enough at the time, but it wasn't a patch on God of War 3 which came out around the same time I think.

I own it and fired it up on my PS3 about 6 months ago and time hadn't been particularly kind to it although it still very much nailed the atmosphere and it is a cool as he'll setting and universe.

Inverno1297d ago

Dante's Inferno needs the GOW treatment. No cut camera, with a real hellish depiction of the 9 circles and a story as dark and as serious would be amazing.

Yui_Suzumiya1296d ago

Still pretty amazing there was a PSP version that was actually pretty good. I remember playing it 10 years ago. I had the PS3 version when it first came out and loved it.

Ahh the memories of playing Heavenly Sword
Such a amazing experience

LoveSpuds1296d ago

Yup, I remember being blown away with Heavenly Sword. I remember holding out hope that they would go back and add trophy support as a incentive to go back and replay the game, but I don't think they ever did?

Yui_Suzumiya1296d ago

I couldn't beat the final boss though! Spent several days trying but eventually gave up, lol. Still enjoyed it though.

refocusedman1296d ago

heavenly sword was such a short, but amazing game. that game should be prime material to be made into a download only remaster.

YoungKingDoran1296d ago

I really enjoyed Castlevania, but struggled to get into it again reattempting it a few years back. I still think it does another of things well; story, presentation, level varietily and art style at least. Gameplay maybe has not stood test of time unfortunately which makes it a chore to get through.
