Rumored PS4 VR Headset Needs to be Treated Like Console, Not Peripheral

A PlayStation 4 virtual reality headset, created by Sony, has been rumored to appear at just about every major trade show in the past year.

Vague reports circulate that it will be shown to the public for the first time at [NAME OF NEXT EVENT], but it somehow always fails to materialize. The latest stories claim that we’ll see it during the Game Developers Conference in March.

It’s an exciting idea, made more so in the wake of known virtual reality hardware such as the Oculus Rift and the STEM system. 2014 is going to be filled with headsets, controllers and equipment that is both functional and relatively affordable, at least in comparison to the historical prices of such equipment. The most challenging aspect of this business may not be hardware, however.

It’s games.

If Sony wants to get into the nascent world of retail virtual reality it has to treat any possible product as a console launch, not a peripheral.

Could this end up being just another Playstation Move, where games are compatible, but not built around it? I hope not because it's things like that which killed the move.

Derekvinyard134476d ago

This is why I don't buy things like this, there's only a few games that will really support what this technology does. Sure it may be excellent tech but when only 5-10 games support it, I can't justify buying it

If they are smart, the VR headset will be both PS4 and PC compatible. As for being compatible with games but not having games built around it, I don't see the problem with that.

Every FPS, every driving game, every game where you are placed in first person view is going to feel amazing (to those of us who enjoy this experience) and those who don't want to buy a $500 piece of hardware can still enjoy the game. I hope Driveclub will be one of the first titles demonstrated with PS4's VR.

I really don't think games need to be designed around VR exclusively.

I do not see this being treated like a console since there isn't a need for it to be handled in that manner. As usual Polygon is off the mark on all things Sony. No surprise there.

As long as Sony codes the proper software right into the dev kits then it would be something similar to implementing remote play as regards the fact it would not be all consuming for developers to accomplish. That was part of the issue with Move, and I do not see the VR headset in the same light.

No, there are quite a few reasons why games need to be made for VR, especially on a headset driven by a console.

It won't work to simply throw games at it that only run at 30fps on the PS4. VR needs low latency, low blurring, and higher temporal resolution which is why you need 60fps as a minimum.

morganfell4475d ago

I am not saying games do not need to be made directly for VR. I am saying if that is all that support the device then the device will fail as not enough people will purchase those titles for it to be worthwhile.

It also needs titles that the common user can game WITHOUT the VR device as well. And example would be Battlefield 5 should support the device, and it shouldn't be a nutroll for developers to get it to work but rather a part of the workflow in the devkit software.

Move isn't dead yet....I hope :/

Only reason I still have it is for Media Molecule's new game.

I gotta say, I'm not too excited about this VR Headset. I want to be excited about it, but I'm not. I see this simply being an add-on to pre-existing games.

At first I didn't agree with you (but didn't vote because, "meh") and I continued reading until I hit thunderbear who said, "If they are smart, the VR headset will be both PS4 and PC compatible."

Then I got to thinking about proprietary "extension" devices... Like non-hacked Kinects, the move, flash guns, track pads, guitars and dance pads specific to certain systems... Then I went, "omg, that makes perfect sense!"

WeAreLegion4476d ago

Microsoft managed to convince consumers that the Kinect and Xbox 360 were two different devices. I wish I were kidding, but I worked retail for seven years. Marketing can make or break a product.

Prime1574476d ago (Edited 4476d ago )

I understand and agree with you. I also don't care for that type of marketing, that's why my disagreeing-with-ms gets me lumped in with Sony fanboys... And conversely why I support Sony over ms.

Interesting read. I know vr is going to need software just likely any platform. Seem weird because that's like a no brainer when it comes to Sony. The thing thats weird about the article is that they quote a lot of devs and OR devs stating about the best experience for vr is going to be game the made from the ground up for them, but say hardware doesn't really matter. They didn't post none of what OR devs and 3rd party gfx engineers that state you need high powered hardware and a quality headset to play games with high gfx in vr. Unless vr games for ps4 is not gonna have gfx like regular next gen games I Dont see how this is going to happen. I'm pretty sure OR devs are thinking if gamers PC can't handle it max they're just going to turn the settings down.

Hope they prove me wrong

This is exciting, a new way to fully immerse yourself in the interaction.

A Sony VR headset would be cool but I really need more info before I can make another comment.

That's fine. GT7 would overshadow it anyway at it has open wheel and regular cars.

Should have been spending their time updating Squadrons with better resolution, frame rate, haptics, etc as there isn't a game like that on PS VR 2 yet.

But it's EA. They don't think.

Babadook71110d ago

I agree. It would sell better on PSVR2 right now.

Knushwood Butt1111d ago (Edited 1111d ago )

A wasted opportunity, but I don't buy EA / Codemasters stuff anyway. Grid Legends just came out on Plus and I haven't touched it. Why would I when I have GT7 and PSVR2?

Abnor_Mal1111d ago

Not into F1 racing, but still a missed opportunity.

ApocalypseShadow1111d ago

That's where opportunity presents itself that they could offer something else that other developers haven't offered yet. Yeah. There's No Man's Sky. But a space game with a story would be great. Like the old days with Colony Wars.

Abnor_Mal1111d ago

Exactly, they could have possibly lured more players just from the inclusion of a vr mode.

I miss Colony wars and G-Police, Low-Fi I hope will scratch that itch when it releases. We also need a vr War/Starhawk game.

Knushwood Butt1111d ago

Just watched the trailer of Low-Fi. Most definitely on my radar.
