Microsoft Just Declared War on GameStop

Fool: Earlier this week, Microsoft announced that it would begin experimenting with digital game discounts. If you own Microsoft's latest console, the Xbox One, for a limited time this month you'll be able to buy a digital version of Ryse: Son of Rome directly from Microsoft's online marketplace for just $40.

This is such a tremendous blow to GameStop's business model that it's difficult for me to overstate the matter.

Meanwhile... In the real world..
Digital and Retail will continue to co exist

Kayant4453d ago

And where people will continue to understand that this is nothing more than a sell on a single game not some so called *War* where DD prices are permanently reduced and lower than retail.

darthv724453d ago

The ironic part is both sony and Ms are wanting to promote digital sales vs retail. Its their way of limiting the 2nd hand market that denies developers and publishers a piece of that lucrative market.

Every copy of a game that gets downloaded via PS+ or the live gold program as part of the paid membership is a retail sale lost. Now granted it might not be a big thing on XBL because the content is much older but you take the more recent offerings that + has (Like Bioshock Infinite for ex) and we are left wondering why a company like irrational Games is closing down. I mean we are buying their games....arent we?

There are pro and cons to going digital vs retail. for me its about the collectable nature of the physical product but i wont pass up a deal on a digital version if its something substantial. there are quite a few PSP digital games i purchased because they were dirt cheap, even when compared to the used market from Gamestop.

So the sensationalist title really doesnt fit when you factor in Steam as well as PSN are into selling digital versions of retail games for less as well. This is a good thing because many have been saying that digital versions SHOULD BE CHEAPER and now that this experiment is happening people want to say its a bad thing????

Oh I forgot, its only bad because it's MS that is doing it...smh.

"This is a good thing because many have been saying that digital versions SHOULD BE CHEAPER and now that this experiment is happening people want to say its a bad thing????

Oh I forgot, its only bad because it's MS that is doing it...smh." - How is it in any way an experiment and just not a regular discount? I fail to see it because looking at major nelson's website you can see that 3 titles in total now including Ryse have had this weekly Gold discount offer. Lococycle and Crimson Dragon and now Ryse have had this weekly gold discount offer. So where does them *experiment* with DD prices come from? Please show me because I clearly can't see it. And no am not just attacking MS. Did I say the discount was bad? No all I said was that it's not an experiment and it's more a part of a weekly gold offer MS does.

Rainstorm814452d ago

I agree darthv...got Lego Marvel in a PS4 flash sale for 30$ this weekend

Digital deals like these is what MS and Sony NEED to continue to do, digital games just shouldn't be the same price as physical copies

But this certainly isn't a war on retail....MGSV GZ is wageing it own war as well then its 40 retail and 30 digital

TripC504453d ago

Discs will die just like the vinyl record. Still Collectable, but dead. Also, self driving cars are coming, in 20 years they will be the norm. Also, Halo happens. We eventually find a Halo ring and everything that happened in the Halo series actually happens (Spartan program is already in the works)...I'm from the future this is how I know this...Also Star Wars happens in a galaxy far far away but not a long time ago.. its the future.

To end an already long story.. Digital-only is, and should be, the way to go for future consoles.

Muffins12234453d ago

Nope...maybe we will have different format in future but i will and many other people will always rather have a physical copy than a digital.

jhoward5854453d ago (Edited 4453d ago )

I get the feelin if MS and Sony get their way...its going to stir up some drama with our ISP.

I can imagine if your PS4/X1 hard drive crashes or game data gets corrupts you have to download it again and again.

By Keeping things the same way(buying disc/download digital) gives balance.

doolin_dalton4453d ago (Edited 4453d ago )

Gamestop can still sell used discs for less than the digital price, considering how much they pay for them. I don't see a problem here.

Besides, digital copies SHOULD be lower in price. After all, there's no manufacturing, packaging, or shipping expenses involved. If console manufacturers want an all digital future, it will happen only when prices are appropriate. People just aren't going to spend the same for a digital copy when they can own a disc that will always retain some resale value.

jhoward5854453d ago

Right now both digital games and physical disc are priced the same.

If Sony/MS drops the price down on games then I'm all for it.

Gamer Tries to Sell PS4 Pro to GameStop, Ends Up Being Asked to Pay the Store

A gamer tried to sell his PS4 Pro to GameStop USA and found out that he would actually have to pay the store.

Lionsguard414d ago

Gamestop: And I'm taking a huge risk here.

1Victor414d ago (Edited 414d ago )

Well there’s no stop like GameStop I’m surprised they didn’t go deeper into the hole with their USED cables and controllers prices.
Edit:
For those that don’t know if you go to trade a console you need it to be ready to go with all the controllers and cables if you don’t have them they ask you to buy them and deduct the price from the monetary appraised for the console

Gamingsince1981414d ago

That makes perfect sense really, why would you be selling your console without all the things it came with and needs to actually be used.

jznrpg414d ago (Edited 414d ago )

eBay.. not having anything for it makes it seems stolen though

Profchaos414d ago

Not always I've seen plenty of refurbished units go cheap because people have picked them up broken then repaired and onsold with no controller or cable. When they are this old many people just want to replace the main unit

jznrpg414d ago

I doubt those people are selling at GameStop

BeHunted414d ago (Edited 414d ago )

In the UK, eBay has removed selling fees, letting you list and sell any item for free.

andy85413d ago

Correct. This is why day one games cost me practically nothing now

Eonjay413d ago

They are gonna take that same console and sell it for $300.

Inverno414d ago

GameStop era ended in the teens. Let it die bruh.

S2Killinit414d ago

I love gamestop. I still shop there. I prefer buying a game from a game store than a department store.

Inverno414d ago

I preferred goin to Circuit City but that died out. Years back I'd go to Best Buy cause of Gamer Club, now Best Buy barely sells games and doesn't sell Blu-rays and looks dead most of the time. Same with GameStop, these stores look like a barren wasteland of Funko Pops and anime figures. These retail stores don't seem to care about pulling in customers. Those figurines are neat, I collect them too but they ain't pulling me into a GS. Rather than attracting gamers they've pay walled everything behind a subscription. As if they weren't already cheapskates back then with their trade ins.

FinalFantasyFanatic414d ago

I still go in there and browse, but never buy anything, the video game section is getting smaller and smaller, even the PS5/Series X/Switch game selection is getting tiny.

tiron8413d ago

I miss Best Buy's Gamer Club, I used to get pre-orders for like 20% off often with other discounts then get points I could trade into discount rebates. It was so good, getting day 1 games for like $30.

When they shut that down I stopped buying games day 1 almost completely.

raWfodog414d ago (Edited 414d ago )

I stopped going to GameStop when they no longer let me use my monthly $5 rewards points towards PS network cards.

Knightofelemia414d ago

Weird I live in Canada and the Gamestop near me says you need the console, controller, controller cord, and an HDMI cord before they will take a console on trade. And if the console shows signs of being opened they still won't take the machine. And if you upgrade the PS4 HDD from 500 gig to a 1TB they will count that machine as modified and label it as a 500 gig model. Better to just sell it on Facebook Marketplace.

clevernickname414d ago

I also live in Canada. I had a similar experience trading in an Xbox One S. Gamestop would give me a pittance for it, so I sold it on Marketplace for almost as much as the original selling price.

GameStop plans widespread store shutdowns after closing 300 locations last year

GameStop has announced plans to shut down stores across the country after closing 300 locations just last year.

Also giving you about $5.00 off for buying a used game is just bullshit. For example: https://www.gamestop.com/vi... New is $59.99, if your going to sell it for a used price it needs to be at least $10-$20 less. I hope GameStop just goes away.

OtterX501d ago

Same nonsense they were doing 20 years ago. 🙄

Time to take old yeller out behind the shed...

Grilla501d ago (Edited 501d ago )

One of the reasons I went digital. I used to trade games in back in the day when money was tighter. Trading a game in for 10-15$ isn’t worth the trouble. Especially when they turn around and sell it for almost full price.

RhinoGamer88501d ago

Not surprising, but sad. WooT is killing it with their game discounts...on new games.

raWfodog501d ago

This is just market forces adjusting for GameStop’s long-time practices of nickel and diming the consumer. I feel bad for the workers though. It’s not good that they have to lose their jobs over this.

P_Bomb501d ago

Unfortunate for the staff, but not unexpected.

46player501d ago

Not too surprising. Lots of people buying digital.

And GameStops trade in and resale pricing strategy is awful for customers. I will miss them when they are gone though.

Most I will miss being able to trade in a console, get a couple hundred towards the new model like PS5 to PS5 Pro.

SonyStyled501d ago

I’ll miss the midnight launch parties. Standing in line with strangers sharing our excitement about a video game. Digital took that from us. I wish younger audiences could experience how joyful it was

Kombatologist501d ago

I often think about times like that and how good we had it, before social media and smart phones gave way to a generation that expects instant gratification.
