The Potential Rationale Behind Irrational's Closure

Rely on Horror: In his closure statement on Irrational's website, Levine stated that his approach to his next project was to follow in the footsteps of those that opted to do independent start-ups. Aware of the risks involved, Levine wrote that one of the things he needed was “a long period of design” - something he did not believe he could accomplish at 2K. Upon presenting his idea to the publisher, they opted to let him do so within their walls. The implications of a move like this are huge.

NEW IPs! As much as I love Bioshock series, wanna see what other new ideas they can execute.

I think we'll definitely see some new IPs. Levine probably felt that managing such a massive team was impeding his creativity. I think this is good news. More and more known developers are moving away from giant companies (see Peter Molyneux, Cliff Bleszinski) to try and pursue something that would express their creativity without a massive, bloated publisher breathing down their neck.

As for the people that lost their job at Irrational, they are sure to receive some type of continuous pay or royalties for a while and I'm sure that they won't be unemployed for long. That talent won't go to waste. In fact there's probably a few small development teams already formed from the remnants of Irrational that we'll soon hear about.

It also doesnt mean that the new project will b made by 15 ppl. If he is taking time to design then its possible that at some point they will ramp up employment once again.

At the moment though, a huge workforce isn't needed. With their experience, they should find employment quickly.

The scary thing for many developers may b the trend.

Long period of time? Didn't infinite get delayed like a 100 times? Good people losing their jobs to fuel his creative ego is bullshit. I loved Bioshock and Levine's storytelling ability but this stinks.

The franchise is being sold, not discontinued.

XXXL4472d ago

Not sure if that's a good thing. Hopefully it will go to someone that respects the material and it doesn't become an annual cash grab.

So what happens to Bioshock for Vita?

Skate-AK4472d ago

Gotta ask 2K. If Borderlands 2 sells well, it would give them more incentive. Anyone that wants to make Bioshock Vita a possibility, should buy BL2.

I like the games Ken makes and I'm glad to hear 2k is letting him take his time to get his next vision out.

Kinda off topic, the article mentioned AAA like 5 times, which got me thinking, what is it that makes a game AAA? Is it quality or budget? Now I've anyways thought it was quality, but if quality is what makes a game AAA, how can a game be AAA before it released? Isn't that's like a movie being promoted as a Oscar winner before it releases, or a album being promoted as number one on billboard before it's even out. On the other hand if its budget that's make a game AAA, I guess it's makes more sense, but just because something costs a lot doesn't automatically make it good
