Jason Dietz: "We reveal the past year's best and worst video game publishers (based on their 2025 releases) in the 16th edition of our annual Game Publisher Rankings."
But... but... the garbage-mongers always tell us that Square Enix is in trouble! 😂

Square Enix announced its financial results for the first nine months of the fiscal year, related to the period between April and December 2025.

3D Investment Partners, a major shareholder of Square Enix, issued a 112-page presentation criticizing the company's 'sluggish' revenue and profit margins.
Waaah waaah our profits aren't big enough! I mean, they're still growing and all, but we want it faster and NOW! Waaaah!
Seems about right for X-2. This was Toriyama's first real game in the role of director, and as we have seen with every game he touches, it lacks the depth of a true Final Fantasy game.
Toriyama is a weird one. On one hand he claims he doesn't want the player having much control over the story/world of a game, kind of like how shooters do a story, because he wants the story to be told in some kind of pure form.
On the other hand, his stories are either the most shallow tripe imaginable, throwing all kinds of OCD tasks at people to make up for the fact that the story is lacking real substance. Or, they are so convoluted and poorly told that you have to actually spend in-game time reading the story that's supposed to be unfolding right before you.
He isn't good at his job. He doesn't have the talent that Sakaguchi does for telling a story, nor has he the talent of Kitase or Nomura to direct a game. He's responsible for X-2 and the entire XIII trilogy and that's why it's not surprising that all 4 of those games are the most poorly received Final Fantasy games to date.
Newsflash Toriyama, Charlie's Angels and Dressup mechanics get boring really fast. You'd have been better off bringing the job system back to console Final Fantasy titles rather than try to recreate them in your ill-conceived image.
It's really bad when this video is better received than the entire FFXIII trilogy...

And I'm sure if there were an equivalent for FFX-2, it would be more positively embraced than that game. Though, funny enough, FFX-2 is better than the entire FFXIII trilogy by virtue of its connection to a superior game in FFX alone.
I couldn't even finish this garbage. This isn't what FF is supposed to be. Give us FFXII in HD instead.
Bleh. I personally never really cared for FFX (even though I'll probably be picking up the remake) and I thought I'd dislike FF X~2...But I didn't I actually kind of enjoyed it back in the day.
The story was pretty shallow, there was no character growth and you couldn't take anything seriously. But I did enjoy the combat and job system immensely.
But you know what....The game was still better than FFX13.
FF XIII was a weird one... it took about 50 hours to actually get going, but once it opened up it was surprisingly satisfying.
