Tech Analysis: Titanfall beta on Xbox One and PC

Digital Foundry: "In our earlier exchange with Titanfall developer Respawn, the words "frame-rate is king" rang loud as its mission statement. Perhaps it's not too surprising, then, that visually the game is a composite of striking and bland elements - a vibrant effects-fest in motion, but with a clinical simplicity elsewhere that can be hard to overlook. We've seen these cutbacks before, of course, and if there's one thing that can get you off the hook for taking this approach, it's a low-latency 60fps golden standard. In the case of the Titanfall beta, however, the results aren't entirely as expected.

However, it all changes once you buckle into a Titan, and in this build we see lengthy passages of play (particularly by the end of a mission) falling within the 35-45fps range. Neither one of the levels on show is especially worse than the other in this regard, and it's clearly the barrage of alpha effects that ends up pressing the hardware too far."

Its a shame that a low end PC can run the game better than 500$ console.

final game will have these issues

what was they thinking??? $500 for this

792p 35fps when in a titan????

I don't feel sorry for the fanboys who are claiming this to be the second coming, I feel sorry for the genuine customers who will buy in to the hype and marketing

Bigpappy4468d ago

PlayStation fanboy at its best. Do you get to get to wear a badge and a hat?

They used an i7 3770K @4.3Ghz. Thats more than twice as fast clockwise and a GPU on par with a PS4 GPU. Is it any surprise the pc runs better.

They need to test is with a similar cpu/gpu spec to the XB1 to get a fair analysis. It would be interesting if a comparable APU from AMD can run the game similar or better than the XB1 version.

kevnb4468d ago

Why? Nobody is going to put a crappy system together like an xbox one.

darksky4468d ago

I would like to see someone do a comparison using an AMD APU but add a 7850 , 7790, etc to determine the difference the different GPU makes to the game. This would clearly show the difference between the XB1 and PS4 GPU's.

Once the PC reviews are in, I guess we will see the gap between a high end pc and the consoles.

@darksky

no you see the difference between the weaker xbone and a high end pc!

Compare bf4 ps4 and bf4 pc while yes the pc versions is better but it also cost 3 times the price of a ps4 and will need upgrades over the next 10 years while I am using the same console with the same parts!

Pc gaming is better but it is also a hell of alot more expensive it takes up more room than a console and if you cant get a game to run be prepared to try everything you can for hours on end and have a chance to not even get to play it!

kevnb4468d ago

You really don't need to spend 3 times as much unless you want to, and you really don't need to upgrade, but it's nice that you can. With xbox one you are stuck with the same hardware and no way of upgrading. Just look at the new games in 360, a lot of them run like dirt now.

darksky4468d ago

Interesting link with some very interesting benchmark results.

The tests were done before Tombraider was released for the consoles so it is interesting that they got around 30fps on Ultra for the simulated PS4 but we know from tombraider devs that the PS4 version runs at 60fps with dips to 40fps.

That means the PS4 gpu is in effect about the same as an 7870XT because they downclocked an 7870XT to 600MHz in the test to get 30fps.

Used correctly the 7870XT is a powerful card that is on par with a 7950 when overclocked. 1080P should be fairly standard for PS4 games in the future.

kevnb4468d ago

Just get it for pc or 360, don't bother with an xbox one for this.

thrust4468d ago

It's great on my xbox one, well made up I got the Xbox one and not the ps4 first

djplonker4468d ago

Well done you paid more for less... SLOW CLAP!

Although the late 2000s Turok wasn't my favorite, I would love a new entry. Open world survival with shotguns and dinosaurs. Not sure how we'd get the fusion cannon, but that would be pretty sweet too.

MadLad1341d ago

Lol

All of these games are pretty much universally praised. Outside of Timeshift I literally own all of these.

Venoxn4g1341d ago (Edited 1341d ago )

XIII, The Darkness 2, Far Cry: Blood Dragon, Timesplitters: future perfect, Bulletstorm are awesome games

I played them all, they are all good in their own way
I used to be obsessed with FPS games

An ode to Titanfall: The last twitch shooter I'll probably ever enjoy

Windows Central: "Titanfall 1 is being sunset, taken off storefronts by EA. While the servers remain live for now, one has to wonder just how much time it has left. I look back and pay tribute to the last "twitch"-styled shooter I ever truly loved."
