During an interview on Left 4 Dead (actually, this is part 2), Valve's Doug Lombardi talks about the source engine and Direct X10.
PCGH: Is DX10 the way to go and therefore the way of future graphics.
Doug Lombardi: Well I mean there is always that tradeoff between taking the time to adopt the engine to a new API, right. And for us we feel like there still things in DX9 that we can achieve without having to go through the pains of moving to DX 10. (...) So for us as a company and our game designs, we've looked at the tradeoff of the work to move to DX 10 and we have always kind of felt that there is not really enough there for us to delay whatever game we are working on by six to eight month just to say we've a DX10 game. (...)

Following Left 4 Dead's undying legacy, the developer of the game shares that a new likewise project is in the works.
L4D had potential to be so much more. The issue was that the release of the second game just one year after the first added a decent amount of content which was much needed, then there was nothing except for a few small content updates spread far between.
This is one of the only games I can think of that benefits from a yearly release, or at least a yearly DLC so it doesn't split the player base.
The games just got too samey and lack content.. it's a shame they didn't keep up the pace, I know you can download new maps but it doesn't change the overall game or add new enemies etc.

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."
Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.
2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

Times are changing, and these games would have never been made in today's climate.
Every single time someone uses this phrase whether it's music, movies, books, comics, video games, etc it's always the same claim.
The ubiquitous "they" won't allow it to be made. And every decade these claims are made the claimant completely ignores all the "offensive" material that is published when the claim is made.
In ten years, you can write a new article about how you can't make games like Helldivers 2, Resident Evil VIII, Mortal Kombat I, Dragon's Dogma 2, Alan Wake 2 etc etc etc any more.
Dead Island: "The early PC version of the zombie game swapped the playable character Purna’s Gender Wars skill with a prototype name, which shouldn’t be mentioned directly. The skill name made fun of both Purna as a character and feminists."
"Feminist Whore" lmao
ill add one more to the list.
drakengard 1.
its ridiculous tho, especially since they'd still be able to find their place in alot of places in the world. except america of course ha. and maybe Australia.
ppl are so sensitive these days. ha. but it is what it is.
They're not offensive.
And we need another Fat Princess. Fantastic little game!
Some people just have no sense of humour if this sort of thing offends them. They need to lighten up and stop taking themselves so seriously.
This game looks Stupid. It looks like a 1992 PC game. I would rather play Duke NukeM instead of this crap. Xbutts are excited about this?
Xbox reached its limits so its going back in time to find pc games to rehash. Its pathetic.
we all played this game 1000 of times since 1990. I thought ut3 would be the last of them but damn.
Valve can finnaly go to hell on this one. They are so lazy. They need crutches for everything and it shows in their dated games.
"And for us we feel like there still things in DX9 that we can achieve without having to go through the pains of moving to DX 10."
Valve needs to be silenced. Laziest developers i ever seen!
I think this game looks pretty good. The Source Engine graphics seem to hold up fine. Sure it's not Crysis but it probably runs a hell of a lot better on most PCs. Plus it will probably look and play great on the 360 as well. DX10 so far has been more hype then anything.
Of course they arent going to push back their games -- and limit their market because only about 17% of people have DX10 capable video cards.
BUT, you can bet that their *NEW* Projects will adopt DX10 as the market matures.
So few people have the HARDWARE to take advantage of DX10, why would they limit their target market?
DX9 is still a good market, but for not much longer frankly. Maybe for the next 12 months... but after that, anything not on DX10 and DX10-capable hardware are going to look dated.
Valve made 2 of my 5 favorite games last year(Portal, Half-Life 2 episode 2). So They have a lot of credibility with me, if they say it's not needed right now I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
DX8 to 9 was a massive next-gen leap with pixel shading. DX10 has nothing "new" in that regard. it's not worth it.
