PS4 GDDR5 RAM Allows Massive Animations At Higher Frames, Gives Room To Increase Immersion

GamingBolt recently had an opportunity to speak the CEO of Origo Games, Adam McClard. The company on currently working on over-the-top 2D fighter The Chainsaw Incident. We asked Adam what kind of development benefits the unified memory architecture and GDDR5 RAM of the PS4 brought to the game.

Sounds like the devs that helped sony decide what to do with the PS4 hardware steered them the right way, I really look forward to the future of PS4 games and what crazy things will be able to be done with such a powerful console :)

otherZinc4435d ago

They should've used this "Massive Animations" power in Infamous Second Son.

kingAjabs4434d ago

They should've used "ANIMATIONS" on Titan Fall. Then it might've sold 1 million like Infamous.

Kavorklestein4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

I guess this 2d fighter REALLY needed all that ram.... doubtful. I can see how the ram is a very great thing to have, but this little game has very little relevancy to being worthy mentioning anything to do with the need for such a large pool of ram.
These guys can praise the PS4 if they want of course, but they surely don't appreciate it as much as Sucker Punch does.
This game could run with the exact same fidelity on last gen, or Wii U. Let's not fool ourselves here. Plus, I can't remember when ANYBODY felt immersed into a 2d fighter. I like them, and love them, but I have never felt immersed lol

zeuanimals4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

They're talking about development in general.

It's pretty common knowledge that GDDR5 has higher bandwidth and one of the uses of RAM is for animations. Higher bandwidth equals more information for things such as animations. Since this is pretty common knowledge, I'm pretty sure even a novice programmer would know this. Whether or not they're working on a 2D game or the most complex game ever doesn't matter.

Kavorklestein4435d ago

Of course they are talking about it in general.
But this article should be attached/linked to a more deserving game.. That's what I mean, and you KNOW that's what I mean.

zeuanimals4435d ago

I know that's what you meant, but they interviewed this particular guy and this is what he had to say. Are they just not going to publish an interview because the game isn't "deserving"?

The guy they interviewed said they're using a lot more frames than most games use, most games have their animations set to 30 or 60 frames.

If you're playing a fighting game on PC and it's running at 120+ FPS, it wouldn't look too different from the game simply running at 60 FPS because most fighting games are animated for 60 FPS. Take Skullgirls on Steam as an example, it's a 2D fighter but all of the animations are created for 60 FPS. It looks fluid but what they're doing in The Chainsaw Incident looks even smoother.

People with high-end PCs always say they don't care about new generations because their machines are better, but they should care because new generations mean devs don't have to program for the lowest common denominator. Expect to see more post-60 FPS animated games from now on. I expect fighters with 3D models or simply 3D fighters to be running at post-60 FPS as well on PS4, PC, and maybe X1.

Volkama4435d ago

It's Gamingbolt, they fish for quotes on GDDR5 in every interview with leading questions.

The chap gets an opportunity for some publicity, and the question that comes his way is something like "Can you tell us how you are taking advantage of the amazing 8gb GDDR5 RAM?".

abzdine4435d ago

it's one of the reasons why i bought a PS4.
i bought PS3 for the massive exclusives and how the CELL processor made them look.
exciting times

Agent_hitman4435d ago

I guess Sony have made a great decision to use GDDR5 for PS4 to be able to achieve their vision in bringing the best games.

With 8GB 5500mhz GDDR5 speed, developers will have more rooms for effects, textures, animations and also texture streaming without relying too much on the bluray..

Skate-AK4435d ago

Not going to lie, this title is super flamebait. In the article he says nothing about PS4. In fact, he says, "I think both platforms and even PC are more similar than most people let on I feel confident that the experience we will offer will be the same on any platform we bring the game to.”

The Chainsaw Incident To Run At 1080p/60fps On PS4, Dev Explains Why It Is Not Coming To Xbox One

I think its great that you will be able to self publish on each platform...that being said, there should be requirements for putting it out on a platform...isnt the marketplace already flooded with crapware? If one more indie dev complains of you have to have a plan when you release on consoles..then get a publisher to do so. Thats what being independent means...do it yourself..follow the rules.

maniacmayhem4443d ago

I agree, self publishing is great but there has to be some kind of rules in place. Look at the iPhone and Android, it's flooded with absolute crap making it very hard to find the gems or good games it offers.

Studio-YaMi4443d ago (Edited 4443d ago )

I guess you haven't checked all the "absolute crap" that was published on XBL on the 360.

Watch some "Rage Quit" videos and the picture will be more clear.

Microsoft are just Anti-indie,that much is already known.

maniacmayhem4443d ago

@Studio
I guess you haven't checked out the "absolute crap" that's on Xbox's indie channel where people can self publish.

That is just one example of a place that is over run with whatever anyone can make with no content control.

MS is not anti indie, as I have pointed out before they have provided an outlet, with the lowest cost on their console plus XNA tools to help anyone that wants to make a game.

I know a lot of folks like to parrot each other on this site but it would help if one had just a tad bit more true info.

Prime1574443d ago (Edited 4443d ago )

Get off your high horse. You parrot a different OPINION.

Edit: I usually agree with you, so I find some of what your saying uncharacteristic of you.

Giul_Xainx4437d ago

All of these arguments over what makes a good indie game need to stop.

"Look at all the crapware."

Look at all the elitists....

I'm not defending the crapware. Get this one straight. But just like the ESRB that no one ever pays attention to, the same can be said about purchasing indie games. DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BUY AN INDIE GAME.

The PS4 has a feature that everyone has become lazy about actually utilizing it. The share button. I am very sure there is at least 1 game play vid of each indie game available. Watch the playthrough and see if it is something you like. You seriously can not be so lazy as to look at just the title of an indie game to determine quality.

This is what happens when too much greatness graces the masses.

They forget too easily.

"Microsoft has so many requirements to self-publish on the platform, including minimum marketing requirements"

...sooo why is it not coming to the Xbox One again? The guy said nothing. What requirements are there stopping you? And mimimum marketing requirements sound like you must market your own game to some degree - not all on Microsoft.

I don't know why people are complaining here. If you don't have these requirements then the indie section on Xbox One will be just like the Xbox 360 section - filled with over 3,000 useless crap titles growing daily.

nerdman674443d ago

Never heard of this game. Doesnt seem like something I want to buy.
I wish more games would be coming out soon.
Everything is spread so far.

SuperBlur4443d ago

the game will be free to play ...

nerdman674443d ago

I dont like fighting games. Free or not.
Never liked them, I dont know why

Prime1574443d ago

I don't like them either, but it's spoiled of me to be daft enough to not recognize that other people might take enjoyment from this.

Volkama4443d ago

I don't like free games, fighting or not.
Never liked them, but I have my reasons!

jhoward5854443d ago (Edited 4443d ago )

The graphics looks wonderful but I'm so over the south park animnation for the Chainsaw Incident.

This happens when one uses cut and paste animation squences. I epect that for a gamning console(ps3/360) that doesn't have enough RAM.
But that isn't the case with PS4.

webeblazing4443d ago

I wonder how many titles with 1080p we re going to have on n4g by the end of the year.

t-hall7854443d ago

lmao it cracks me up. every side scrolling indie game or 2d sprite based game brags about it like its not possible on the x1

pinkie-pie4443d ago (Edited 4443d ago )

"every side scrolling indie game or 2d sprite based game brags about it" sorry but that's not physically possible.

Prime1574443d ago

How do you know it's not just the media site clinging to those words because of his?

In fact, I'd gander that many devs only say that because asked by the media more than hoping this train for hits.

aerisbueller4443d ago

@t-hall785 wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't possible on x1

@pinkie-pie since when have you ever cared what's physically possible?

Baka-akaB4443d ago (Edited 4443d ago )

PS fanboys should realize how it "dillute" the effect when you gotta announce every indie 2d or not seemingly hardware consuming indie as a 1080p title .

It's great , but not worth parading around with . Below 60 fps fighting games are a rare sight

TheTwelve4443d ago

No problem diluting gaming with high performance. Once that becomes the norm, games will only get better. There's an expectation from gamers that needs to be met, and its ok to talk about if one is meeting it, especially when there are those claiming that secondary performance is ok.

Baka-akaB4443d ago (Edited 4443d ago )

Sure , but it's a tad ridiculous when its about flaunting games that would run high anyway . You gotta admit that you'll smile the next time someone brag about running Tetris at 1080p@60 ...
Those things werent even mentioned , until indie publishers and devs realised how easy it was to use it for PR .

At some point those things should just be standards for smaller titles , hell they often already were , even if it isnt yet for all retail products

TheTwelve4443d ago

Agreed. You might say "becoming standard" is "diluting the effect".

So, I say dilute away.

mrmarx4443d ago

we did have a 792p article

Flutterby4443d ago

Well don't worry , it will pretty much only be when an article is about the ps4 , if you want lower and varied rez read about the xbone games , they range from 720p to the very very rare 1080p. Hope that helps :)

webeblazing4443d ago (Edited 4443d ago )

People seem to missed the point. We are the point where people post about res and frame rate to get hits. And why would I want to read about them both consoles are struggling to get to 1080p @60fps at a high gfx setting. And people want to argue and put this on every article title. When we going to hear something new about game play or anything new besides this. This game isn't even coming to xbone so whats the point and put that in the title. Y'all keep getting manipulated by theses companies and these site.

New age gamers are the worst imma find a new site this site is the scum of the gaming community.
