The New PC Gaming

There have been a startling number of "PC Gaming is Dying!" sort of statements coming out lately, the latest of which coming from Cliff Bleszinski of Unreal Tournament fame. This statement no doubt related to the poor sales numbers of Epic's own Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War PC. I suppose it's worth noting that Gears of War PC was released almost a year after its 360 version and its relatively high system requirements may or may not be a contributing factor in its sales numbers.

Its all about the PS3 now. Witness the ps3 takeover

Yet if you truly want "Best of the best" in the graphical department, PC is your home. And I still argue that M+KB combination is superior to pad controls.

Bolts6584d ago

The flexibility of the KB+Mouse is endless, it is probably the best gaming device ever. Without it there would be no FPS and RTS genre.

The PC is THE place to play games... if you have the money. Fortunately I do. But I can see where consoles offer the lower expendable income people a decent experience for their money.

But anyone who has gamed on a PC for more than an hour knows it is a better platform.

I think its not really that, there's more to it. Surely consoles have the advantage that they are cheaper. Mom can buy little Joe a console for a much more affordable price than an high-end PC that would require further expense down the road. But its not just that. Many people buy consoles because they simply prefer it. Their friends have consoles, they are small and look perfect under your nice HDTV set, they are also multimedia machines for movies, etc. They are a well rounded entertainment hub.

I say this because I've been a PC player for the last 18 years and I'm moving more and more into the console world and its not for lack of money. I spent 2300 euros last year on a gaming PC. But I find that I start to largely prefer to play on consoles. I'm tired of upgrading, I'm tired of driver's problems, windows problems, etc. I also find playing in the confort of the sofa with a 46'' TV much more rewarding and imersive than on my 20'' PC screen sitting on a chair. I could certainly plug my pc to an HDTV, but I don't want a PC on the living room and put my KB&M on a table.

Also, its a different experience. If I show Bioshock on PC to someone they will say "wow thats really cool", but if I show it on the living room on the 46'' TV they will say "WOW, MAN, AMAZING!!!". The big screen just has that effect, combined with the confort of the controler ad sofa chair. The immersion is just bigger, the "amazement effect" just pops out much more.

Really, its a matter of preference, but as gaming becomes more and more mainstream, people will more and more shift to consoles, not PCs. PCs will have its own strong points in MMOs and RTSs and some more casual Stuff like the Sims, but they will not see a rebirth as the leading platform for FPS, action-advanture, etc.

Also don't forget that HDTVs are not an added cost to console play, which is an argument used against consoles beying cheaper than PC gaming. HDTVs are the future for everyone, not just gamers. Its almost impossible to find an SDTV in stores today. More and more people will be forced to buy HDTVs no matter if its for gaming or watching football. Its not an added cost, its something that everyone will have no matter what.

It got too expensive for me. I bought an xbox360 for a couple hundie and added a gamefly subscription for $20 / month. Low investment, minimal ongoing costs, but lots of killer gaming.

This is the natural ebb and flow of technology. At the start of every generation, console hardware is always very competitive with PC hardware. However, as time goes on, it starts to show its age, since it cannot be upgraded in the same way that a PC's hardware can be.

Either way, we all owe PC gaming a debt of gratitude. Those graphics chips we all love in our PS3s and 360s wouldn't have been possible without the constant competition in the PC gaming industry. Let's all hope that rampant piracy doesn't completely kill PC gaming off, or we'll start to see much slower development on the graphics side of gaming.

As long as PCs exist, PC games will exist.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing24d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit24d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing24d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9223d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
