Opinion:How I dumped Windows for Linux - Day 1

Simon Pickstock reports:

''Linux has been getting a lot of press over the past six months, particularly populist distributions such as Ubuntu. Dell has installed Ubuntu onto its Linux PCs and laptops, and let's not forget the phenomenally successful Eee PC from Asus, which runs the Xandros distro.

The open source OS is also starting to make some headway on mobile phones in the form of the Google-backed Android and rival LiMo. It all shows how accessible Linux has become.''

So, N4G has finally hit rock bottom. Trolling the internet for all the anti-MS product stories. Great.

gEnKiE6622d ago

Well what do you expect? Vista is horrible and their dropping XP soon. Plus, do you remember when the PS3 was released? You can't tell me that N4G was a pro Sony site then....

Bolts6622d ago

You have to "troll" to find anti MS product stories?

ruibing6622d ago

Hmm, my response to this article would have just been: "Jeez join the club, you're the millionth member we are out of T-Shirts".

Personally I don't see how we can get around opinionated articles that are against nothing. N4G would become pretty boring if every article is always neutral and never reaches any conclusion about anything.

im one of the few that actually likes vista. as long as you have a large amount of ram, imo its a good OS. ive been considering giving linux a whirl on a partitioned drive but i dont want to deal with problems. i didnt know you could run it from your cd/dvd drive as stated in the article. maybe i will try it out... sometime

riksweeney6622d ago

But you shouldn't need a huge amount of RAM just to run an OS.

xplosneer6622d ago

If I wasn't so swamped this week I was planning to do the same thing. But not now.

gEnKiE6622d ago

I actually did today believe it or not. I downloaded Ubuntu from their site, burned a copy, then ran it off the CD to see how it performed. I loved it. The only thing stopping me from doing a full install is finding out how to get WoW to work through Linux. I know it can be done though, so soon I will be away from Windows...

Step by step, just copy and paste the correct command, mostly likely version 8.04 if you recently installed. It is more involved than simple install it with Windows, but still possible.

XP with SP3 if far better for gaming.

Since this is News For Gamers....I guess gaming performance is most relevant.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing62d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9262d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit62d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing62d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9262d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
