We’re Losing the War on Microtransactions

Hardcore Gamer: We all know that microtransactions are becoming more and more integral to their respective games, convoluting competition and damaging publishing rights, but we’ve still been able to (begrudgingly and reluctantly) coexist with them. Final Fantasy: All the Bravest was a downright travesty, one of the most manipulative and dishonest releases to come from any franchise. When you have to either wait three minutes to revive a party member or pay real money to speed it up, that’s putting up a paywall that literally prevents you from continuing. You’re forced to just…wait. All the Bravest was widely panned for this issue alone, earning a number of dubious honors, including places on many gamers’ and publications’ “worst of 2013” lists. But as much of a wreck All the Bravest is, it’s not the worst use of microtransactions. That’s very hard to believe, but something has gone lower. A game has made microtransactions even worse than All the Bravest did.

But we're also winning the war on getting games for free.

-Foxtrot4523d ago (Edited 4523d ago )

If you take all the stuff thats offered by MT in a game, you'll find that you'd be paying more if you bought every MT to have a full game then you would if you bought a game at full price with everything included like we do now

It's a rip off at the end of the day, people see "FREE to Play" and think "Oooooo free well this is going to be good" when really it's not

We lost against DLC last gen and look what happened the majority of devs took the p*** and we all suffered because of it

Seriously it's like most people don't learn from the past

worldwidegaming4523d ago

totally agree. It seems most people should read some business and economic books.
Nothing (not even air) is free!
once they added in DLC the layoffs began!

CYCLEGAMER4523d ago

Lets play devils advocate for a second. My take on it is this, everyone wants to complain about MT but no one really talks about WHY they exist.

Now I am not all for MT but I do understand why a team would put them in. Us as consumers have essentially put a cap on how much a developer or publisher can charge us for a game at $60. So no matter how much your game cost to make, no matter how much time and production you put into a game, $60 is the MAX that you could make a retail for a game.

NOW....us as gamers are always pushing for, BETTER GRAPHICS, BIGGER/BETTER STORIES, MORE FPS, BETTER ACTING, ETC...but we aren't willing to pay the cost. In most cases at least we have the option of enjoying the games without having to puchase anything.

I would rather have the option of purchasing a MT or playing the game through and earning the items, rather than being forced to pay $80-$90 for a game.

"NOW....us as gamers are always pushing for, BETTER GRAPHICS, BIGGER/BETTER STORIES, MORE FPS, BETTER ACTING, ETC...but we aren't willing to pay the cost. In most cases at least we have the option of enjoying the games without having to puchase anything. "

This is something of a fallacy. Some people claim that everyone wants better graphics, yet Minecraft and Hotline Miami were both successful. In fact, there are a lot of games (mostly indie) that found a fair amount of success going back to 8 / 16 bit styles. Even big games like 3D Dot Game Heroes found success by using the classic styles.

The same is actually true for all these things. People praise the Souls games, yet the story is hidden (at least in demon) and there is almost no acting. A lot of games also have bad acting, though I rarely see that called out in a review beyond a game that is centered around it.

There are plenty of examples where a game might have 1 thing, but fails at 5 other things, but is still considered great or successful. If anything, a lot of companies think they need to check off every box, add multiplayer, expand on everything, which increases their budget without increasing their user base.

"Now I am not all for MT but I do understand why a team would put them in. Us as consumers have essentially put a cap on how much a developer or publisher can charge us for a game at $60. So no matter how much your game cost to make, no matter how much time and production you put into a game, $60 is the MAX that you could make a retail for a game."

Anyway, a big problem with MT is that a lot of "cheap" games have these absurd costs. Games like Candy Crush Saga aren't huge games that need vast amounts of money. Heck, I would consider paying $10 for CCS as too much, yet they make a fortune from MT. Sure there are good examples, but there are also a lot of cheap low budget games that try to make a fortune by doing very little.

FamilyGuy4523d ago (Edited 4523d ago )

Why would anyone EVER buy every piece of DLC or every MT in a F2P game?

What you're suggesting is idiotic and grasping at straws to correlate a comparison that works in your favor.

Point blank: Free to play games generally aren't built the same as full priced retail titles. Regardless of that truth here's another: The amount of content in a game differs with every single title. There is no standard of game length and amount of content, the only thing close to standard are retail pricing.
For example: We have 50 hour RPGs and 300 hour RPGs both selling for $60. We have FPSs that have 5 hour single player campaigns with online multiplayer and we have FPSs with 12 hour single player campaigns with online multiplayer both selling for $60 retail.

In both models you have developers making games to make a profit. There are full blown $60 titles that feel like they are worth less than the $15 you decided to spend on your favor F2P game. Some games are just garbage, regardless of price or sales model.

While games like minecraft and a few others have their place, I am sure many other gamers would lose their sh@t if most of our games where made in this style. I personally want games that push the hardware of the system that I spent $400-$500 for. Also IMO games like that should not cost $60 to begin with.

Do you not hear and see all of this talk about graphics, 1080p, 60fps, storylines etc??? Gamers care about this stuff.

My point is games since the 80's have cost around $60, the difference today is that they cost almost quadrouple to make now than they did back then, however they can only charge us $60

* There used to be tons of single player offline games that came with tons of content and replay value.

Always some kind of creation tool or skirmish mode to allow us to play forever.

Then the Greed started.

kazuma9994523d ago

Thats why you dont pay to win like a noob lol. You can get most of the sheet from just playing.

admiralvic4523d ago

"Thats why you dont pay to win like a noob lol. "

A lot of games are designed all around this concept to a point where you're either paying to actually beat the game in a timely manner or waiting minutes and hours to do something you could do in 3 minutes if they didn't charge for micro transactions. Too many people forget that there are good examples (Dead Space 3, which was pointless) and terrible examples.

JohnApocalypse4523d ago

I don't think its was going to stay with core games. Remember when EA said that they were going to put Microtransactions in all future games right around DS3 came around? Fuse doesn't' have them, Battlefield 4 doesn't have them and the upcoming Titanfall won't have them

HarryMasonHerpderp4523d ago

I just can't get my head around those microtransactions where you can pay to skip through the game and unlock everything.
Whats the point in even buying a game if you don't even want to play it. I get that some people just want everything from the start but you just spent £40/$60 on a game. Try getting your moneys worth. I hate microtransactions so much, one of the worst things to hit the industry in a long time. Whatever happened to unlocks and cheats. Ya know the fun stuff?
Now it's all buy this costume/skin, buy this item, buy this new car etc etc.

worldwidegaming4523d ago (Edited 4523d ago )

Time is money! normally you would not need to grind hour after hour so they make grinding extra long and give you boosts if you pay 99 cents! free to play games suck big time. Id honestly rather watch ads than be forced to pay to win but that's just me.

kazuma9994523d ago

Yup, what ever happened to the good old days where you grind for hours for an items. That has more of a satisfaction than just buying it.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio54d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing54d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9254d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit54d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing54d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9254d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
