PS4 Exclusive Deep Down's Microtransactions and Stance on DLC Explained by Capcom

Capcom's upcoming PS4 exclusive Deep Down will be a free to play game, and many have wondered what kind of content they can expect to have to pay for in order to fund the game's business model. Today Producer Yoshinori Ono game a further glimpse on that in an interview for investors published by Capcom.

I expect the worst when it comes to Capcom and their Free to play titles. Pay to win greedy SOB's

infectedaztec4484d ago

People can vote with their wallet. Capcom owe you nothing. If you don't like the service they provide then don't buy it.

At least with F2P models you can try out the game. I sucks buying a game that turns out to be crap

Godmars2904484d ago

"People can vote with their wallet."

Unless they make the mistake of "buying in" to the F2P title and Capcom has designed it so the only way you can actually play it is to buy something. Its otherwise a frustrating experience.

While most will walk away from such a game, if only a few buy in and somehow manage to show the tactic profitable, it will be done again and again. Until it becomes a common practice in the market.

It is fact has become a common thing.

AaronMK4484d ago

"If you don't like the service they provide then don't buy it."

You misunderstand. There are many of us who would like to buy it, instead of being micro-transactioned with no end in sight.

"At least with F2P models you can try out the game."

A demo will let you try out a game.

Then you can decide to buy a game that can be designed around great game play, rather than pay again and again for one where the game play is compromised because they have to drive you to buy stuff at every step along the way.

MetaReapre4484d ago

I play many f2p games and would like to give a couple pointers so that you can decide whether to "pay into" a f2p game.

1. If a free to play game makes you pay to access common areas and the only "free" area is the first one, ditch the game, its not worth it.
2. If you can access only few items in the game and have to pay to obtain the rest, ditch the game.

Most f2p's are good to play. However, if you follow those to points you shouldn't get yourself into a bad f2p that just wants all of your money. F2p games should be just that, free to play, so don't get fooled into paying for access to the game in parts and you'll be just fine.

If you need a good example of free to play games to compare to, take a look at games like league of legends or warframe.

sinspirit4483d ago

But here is an example. If this game is more like Demons Souls than Dark Souls like how in Demons Souls the worlds have the stones to enter them then you could have some worlds unlocked but pay to unlock the others, which isn't unreasonable. But if you have a pay to win type of system to get better equipment and stats then just no.

Patrick_pk444484d ago

Remember this, Deep Down is free-to-play, so you aren't dishing out $60 for the game But, I can easily pay $60 for micro-transactions and unlock everything I need, basically it is like buying a new game.

theDivision4483d ago

If I have to pay 60$ to access a full game and get around 100 hours of gameplay then I will be pleased. The game warframe is an example of how a f2p game really worked out. You could unlock almost everything in the game (cosmetics cost money) but it may take a lot of time to get some of the items so a lot of people resorted to purchasing an item or two they really wanted. It never really was a p2w game and because everything could be unlocked through play it ended up being very fun.

What I don't want is being able to access 10% and the other 90% costing money each time I try to access it.

Kurisu4484d ago

In the end you'll have half an hour or free time a day but if you want to play any longer you'll have to pay extra lol. Looking forward to giving this a bash when I get a PS4 but rather it was a retail release.

iceman13464484d ago

i think you're talking about mobile free to play games

Abriael4484d ago

That is *extremely* unlikely. What Ono is describing is a business model similar to F2P MMORPGs, which have no such limitation.

DeadlyFire4484d ago

some do set limits on free players with a subscription beside it for paying players.

MonChiChi4484d ago

If game is good and the micro's/ DLC are actually worth the price, I have no problem supporting, but give me crap for high price and I am not touching this with a 10 ft pole.

T24484d ago

yes, I do see the dangers of microT in games, look at some of these shit games on mobile devices, build a crappy little town and then pay up to 20, 40, 70 dollars for "gems" or "crystals" or some other garbage... wtf is this sht?
However IF and I do mean IF Capcom can make a F2P game where lets say you wanna buy some cool armor for 3.99 (not horse armor lol)or a flaming bastard sword for 4.99 and you can do everything you would normally want to do for 50 dollars or LESS, then sure I may bite on this...
But if it's a regular F2P where the people who paid 200$ kick your butt everytime then Capcom can F off.

pompombrum4484d ago

"The important is not viewing DLC as a form of added value, but as a system that we’re supposed to have."

Lol! This is something all fans of Capcom games have been made painfully aware of over the last few years.

porkChop4484d ago

What... that's the exact opposite of how they're supposed to see it.

desertpunk864484d ago

i wonder if spending $60 on this game will get me through the first level?

Abriael4484d ago

You can pretty much assume that you won't need to spend anything to get through the first level. Or at least most levels.

Volkama4484d ago

Most likely wont need to pay anything to get through your levels. But you'll have the 'option' to get through those levels twice as quickly so long as you top up the meter (2x xp potions and what not).

I thought this looked fun. I hope they do something with it eventually.

Rangerman12081713d ago

From what I have read, they wanted to delay the game to make the graphics "realistic". Imo, the game already looked good as it is. My guess is that perhaps they shifted their focus for a ps5 release but only time will tell.

Michiel19891712d ago

considering it looked basically better than any other game in that trailer, they were probably too ambitious. They also wanted to have endless dungeons, have several historic periods that they wanted to realize, infinite randomly generated loot. its not being made for ps5, it went in the dumpster, no way capcom would let them work on it from then on until now. it was like 9 years ago or something that trailer came out?

Ashunderfire861712d ago

I remember seeing demo footage of this game on the PS4! It already look like one of the best looking games on the PS4, like a prenext gen game before PS5.

Shinox1712d ago (Edited 1712d ago )

This was never meant to be a game and it was more like a showcase for their engine "Panta Rhei" that they never used in any game ( which probably named RE Engine now ) , yes this project was meant to be a low budget free to play game for the PS4 and planned to release in Japan but all of that was canceled in a matter of few months , this whole project has been silently canceled long long time ago and people does not know Capcom well when it comes to sideswiping projects

Giraiga131711d ago

@Shinox if what you said is true then that's a big shame really. I was really looking forward for the game, and it had some cool ideas and mechanics that caught my attention (though making it a F2P title was somewhat worrisome).

darthv721713d ago

I always thought it was because of this games questionable development that they were able to do the deal for SFV in its place.

SyntheticForm1712d ago

As far as I'm aware not a single game was developed with the Panta Rhei engine. Some aspects of the engine may have been folded into Capcom's current engines, but who knows, really?

I thought it looked really good at the time it was shown.

Giraiga131712d ago

Agreed. The game had a lot of promise, jankiness aside. Plus, I sorta loved the survival horror aspects of the game in certain areas.

ManInRed1713d ago

Still sucks we haven't heard much from it. Really liked the concept behind it, and I feel like I was one of the very few who liked the game's music. A shame it's in hiatus as of now.

Sciurus_vulgaris1713d ago

I think Platinum has been overextending itself for a good while now. Scalebound was canceled after missing deadlines and Bayonetta 3 has shown nothing since its announcement in 2017.

Sciurus_vulgaris1713d ago

Posted my comment on the wrong article..,

Rangerman12081712d ago (Edited 1712d ago )

Like Darkborn said, you still have a good point, even if it's not related to this newspiece.

Sciurus_vulgaris1712d ago (Edited 1712d ago )

@Darkborn and Rangerman1208

I think Deepdown's disappearance is simply due to Capcom focusing resources on their already established IPs ( Resident Evil, Monster Hunter and too a lesser extent Devil May Cry). Despite the vaporware nature of Deepdown, Capcom has been doing quit well for the past 4 years or so.

TheExecutioner1713d ago

even capcom doesnt know .. no one knows what happened

Rangerman12081713d ago

Honestly, I want to believe the game will happen but after what happened with Wild, who's to say Capcom won't consider on pulling the plug on the game?

A shame cause the game looked very interesting.

Barneyco1712d ago

Excuse my ignorance but was Wild cancelled or delayed? I didn't hear news about that.

Barneyco1712d ago

I looked Wild up. I had no idea it was cancelled last year. I was looking forward to it.

spicelicka1712d ago

It's quite deep down this game

hulk_bash19871712d ago

Deep down seemed like Vaporware from the start. There was never anything shown beyond the initial reveal trailer.

Yppupdam1712d ago (Edited 1712d ago )

There is always games like this that look cool and excites everybody...and then it disappears. Look at "8 days", everything about that game looked as cool as hell, The Story, Ving Rhames as one of the characters and pretty cool game mechanics (of what video leaked out of them) That game still stings to me, I really wanted to play it.

Giraiga131712d ago

Same thing with The Getaway for the PS3. I always wanted to try out English GTA from Sony, but it sadly never came to be.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 1712d ago
DVAcme1712d ago

While the game never came out, I don't think it was time wasted. If you look well at how the camera follows the character and how it moves around during "gameplay", you'll notice it's spot-on identical to the camera in Resident Evil 2 Remake. Deep Down might have been cancelled, but it most likely became a proof of concept for Capcom in development of the REngine.

Magic_Spatula1712d ago

I always thought it was a tech demo never intended to become an actual game. Pretty sure it's just them showing off what would eventually become their proprietary engine Reach For The Moon Engine or "RE Engine" as most people call it.

danglyparts1712d ago

capcom calls it the RE Engine, because thats what its called

Giraiga131711d ago

To quote from the other guy, it's definitely likely that Phanta Rei probably transformed into the RE engine. Still, it sucks the game might not see the light of day, especially considering how ambitious Capcom was with it.

Street Fighter V Executive Producer Yoshinori Ono Leaving Capcom

Few among Capcom’s developers are as well known as Yoshinori Ono, who has basically been the face of the Street Fighter series since IV. Now, he's leaving the company ad the brand.

Fluttershy772104d ago

Not sure if good or bad. SFIV was amazing, Capcom had a winner there they should have supported it. SFV is Ok. Fighting games are a niche thing, so they try to incorporate as much people as they can, but when the game is so basic and easy to execute, it becomes boring after a while. A good fighting game is a hardcore game.
What I want from Capcom for the future is another Alpha, with the same amazing art style and animation (that's key) but Hardcore don't make it accessible... if you want to be good, learn it.

Abriael2104d ago (Edited 2104d ago )

Losing a developer as experienced as Ono-san is never good. He may have made mistakes, like everyone, but the experience he brings to the table (of good and bad things) is doubtlessly valuable.

Sonic-and-Crash2104d ago (Edited 2104d ago )

@FLutter... i agree with Flutter....i wouldnt call that a loss for Capcom , Yoshinori along with other new generation developers were responsible for wasting/destroying a lot of legendary Capcom franchises ....just remember RE 5-6-7 (and probably 8) , under the supervising of Jun Takeuchi , or DmC and UVM3 ...

These younger generation developers were underdogs previously on big games but not directors or high ranked developers and that s why dont know how to properly make great games or reboot them ...Capcom made a lot of mistakes the past 10-15 years putting these guys in director /producer positions

jznrpg2104d ago

@Sonic you aren’t blaming management at all which makes little sense . Corporate had the ability to green light projects , not the devs themselves . Sure devs can make bad games but the past mistakes of Capcom and even Street Fighter are definitely part of managements fault . I don’t have direct knowledge but I do know when you fail at a company it always starts at the top .

Sonic-and-Crash2104d ago (Edited 2104d ago )

@jznrpg.....yes iagree ...the problems are mainly management s fault by just greenlighting the funding of one project and dont having quality standards to be at least comparable /similar in assets with previous games of the IP ....

Capcom for some stupid reason does this a lot as they seem to care more to grab the quick money from hype/expectations rather than creating an artistic product that will leave a legacy behind it....Some say in purpose are changing randomly the devs behind a new project in order veteran developers to not get the proper credits and publicity and in someway obtaining "property" over the IPs--example Mikami -Resident evil or Kojima -MGS , though that way unexperienced people with bad ideas tend to become head directors and develop sloppy games ....As of now i dont expect nothing else than medicority from Capcom for the next gen ....as the last game i liked from them was Monster Hunter World and before it Dragons Dogma ...any other game from the classical IPs they transformed it to cash grab mediocrity that doesnt have anything in common with older games(best example RE series)

bouzebbal2104d ago

solideagle2104d ago

SFV sold more than SFIV, I agree it had troubled launch but sales depicts success for SFV. I am assuming SFVI will be multiplatform now?

jukins2104d ago

Never know but I doubt it with any spending heavily on 3rd party content and exclusives. Depending how close it is im sure sony approached them

Imortus_san2104d ago

SF5 is multiplatform just like most SF games before it, the only reason its not on Xbox is Because Sony paid Capcom not to Launch on Xbox, so they could get rid of Xbox on Evo Championship.

Teflon022104d ago

Imortus
It's because the game wouldn't have existed if Sony didn't FUND the GAME. Not specifically pay for exclusive rights. They simply said it'll be a generational exclusive as return for funding.

Why the hell would Sony care if MS has Xbox at EVO? Lol. PlayStation is the prefered spot for fighting games, that wouldn't even make sense. Now Call of Duty and Activision I can believe that for since Xbox was the only spot for shooters in the 360 Era

Imortus_san2104d ago

@Teflon02

That is a ballant Lie that you keep telling yourself, Capcom never needed money, much less help to make the game they have been making for 30 years, and to prove it, you also have SSF4 lanch on PS5 to take out the Xbox 360 version from Evo.

"Why the hell would Sony care if MS has Xbox at EVO? Lol. PlayStation is the prefered spot for fighting games," - PS5 is last gen was Xbox 360 that rulled the Evo and had arcade sticks with 0 input lag.

Yoshinori Ono leaving is good.

People say he revived Street Fighter but seem to forget that he was just a sound designer before and had a big role in changing the fighting game industry into the dlc and microtransactions mess it is now.

Gaming4Life19812104d ago

I agree all the way with you fluttershy77 sf4 was amazing and sf5 is just ok. All I want is for capcom to stop trying to make these fighting games accessible and let people practice and get better like it used to be.

DeadManMMX2104d ago

They supported the hell out of SFIV. I remember having a large group of people to talk to about it at work. We were never going to be pros but man we loved it and all the updates. Then they went platform exclusive which was stupid and launched in a half finished state. It just hasn't been the same this time around.

NeoGamer2322104d ago

Street Fighter V improved a lot from launch, but it really tainted the franchise for me. Maybe some new leadership will mean a better game next round from Day One.

RaiderNation2104d ago

I was really turned off by the business model of SFV. Charging full price for the game and purposely holding content out to charge extra for it was ridiculous.

Viking_mo2104d ago

They did that on street fighter 4 and onwards. It was expected to happen. I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled that with street fighter 6

Teflon022104d ago

Holding content out?
Why are there so many ppl with these ridiculous assumptions. SFV released like that because they didn't finish the game. But do you seriously think the game could have released ever if they eere putting the content that's in it now? SFV helped bring Capcom back after not even knowing if they can fund a big game anymore at the generations start. The game was barebones. But they didn't make you buy a separate game like SFIV to Super SFIV. They game you all the game modes and updates, a story mode which is new mainline street fighter etc. While I get the issues with the initial release as it was bad. These weird narratives lol. Come on

RaiderNation2103d ago (Edited 2103d ago )

@Teflon02

"Why are there so many ppl with these ridiculous assumptions?"

Its not an assumption. That's exactly what Capcom did! They purposely released SFV with a severely gimped lineup of fighters just so they could turnaround and sell them for extra cash! There are older versions of Street Fighter with much bigger rosters. Plus it REALLY pissed me off that fighters like Sagat, Blanka, and E-Honda were put behind a damn pay wall! Those fighters are STAPLES of the SF roster and should always come standard with the main game! SFV was one of my most regrettable purchases this generation!

Imortus_san2104d ago

SF is dead, after this cluster f_ck they made, with charging like hell for a shit ton of Extra characters, and the new versions they released are all the same with some extra code, meaning if you dont have online all you get the the beta release.

RaiderNation2103d ago

Agreed! Putting staple characters like Sagat, Blanka, and E-Honda behind a paywall was about as big of an asshole move as you can make! Those characters should ALWAYS come standard with Street Fighter!

sourOG2104d ago

He’ll be an asset wherever he goes. The last street fighter presentation was fantastic and makes it seem like replacing him was a good move though.

neomahi2104d ago

Not a bad Executive Producer, a pretty goofy dude, at least he didn't push his own personal agenda on people like Naughty Dog have, and if he did, it was subtle. Ono knew how to separate his personal feelings from business, I think he did well. His demeanor strongly indicates how he feels every time he's on stage, but it didn't exactly manifest itself in games in a pushy way, it was subtle and I appreciate that from him.

i hope this to transform to " Dragon s Dogma 2 Deep Down" ....would be smart move and excellent to revisit DDogma elaborate world

Lore2148d ago

I’m hoping for both

camel_toad2148d ago

Capcom is really sitting on Dragon's Dogma and I don't get why. It was an out of nowhere fantastic game.

They need to come out with the sequel already.

Hakuoro2148d ago

That's actually what I always thought, that it was just a code name for a Dragon's Dogma game.

bouzebbal2148d ago (Edited 2148d ago )

heard good things about DD.
didnt have a chance to try it, so i hope the series gets some love cause i think it was successful.

Michiel19892148d ago

@sonic I rather hope for a Monster Hunter deep down, that could be amazing

Army_of_Darkness2148d ago

It's probably gonna be a ps5 game now.

nitus102148d ago

I will agree Dragon's Dogma is an excellent game and having the ability to climb on huge enemies is fairly unique, however, I really hope that Capcom (if they make DD2) reduces those "escort missions" or at least makes them much more interesting. Of course, if I hear "Harpy!" one more time I am going to scream.🤪

Renewing a trademark is a sign of life because they cannot just indefinitely renew it, they only get so many renewals before it is rejected and open to the market again.

Kavorklestein2148d ago

I kind of have a feeling that Deep Down was put off until new hardware because the Quality of what we saw in the trailer looked like it was causing major frame issues and stutters on the PS4 the time.

The PS5 may finally be able to handle the visual goal of what they were going for.
