New Hardware from Nintendo? No.

Nope! Nintendo isn't about to release a new console, and it's likely they're not even planning a new console at this stage, unless it's a Wii U or 3DS with a slightly revised form factor.

If they aren't even planning a new console now then they are in trouble. Pretty sure MS and Sony have already started planning theirs.

Phil324504d ago

Of course they're working on a new console already. That's generally how it works.

One console down, start R&D on the next.

SilentNegotiator4503d ago

Exactly. Major R&D for the next system always starts almost immediately.

And they would be stupid to succeed or sidestep their hardware already. They have to make back their money with current hardware or else investors will abandon them. Even if they did release an Android tablet (as per the rumors) successfully and without taking away from the 3DS, they would make themselves look weak; like they were waving the white flag to all of the doom speak.

Metallox4504d ago

Wii development started practically after GameCube's launch, Wii U development started almost immediately after the Wii's launch. It's pretty obvious that Nintendo it's developing Wii U's successor.

gpturbo814503d ago

ms and sony should worry about droppin some games before they start a new console.

SolidDuck4504d ago

I agree. But they need to do something. I think they need to drop the gamepad screen. No one is using it in very innovative ways anyway. But cutting the cost of the screen and putting a pro controller with it instead. They could drop the price then, maybe even down to 199. Id buy one for that price for sure, just for nintendo's first party games even. They still make incredibly fun 1st party games. Just a thought.

Chard4504d ago (Edited 4504d ago )

This.
None of the games I'm looking forward to are likely to be greatly enhanced by a touch screen.

Maybe also release a Pro controller that has some personality instead of everything on it being just one colour, not to mention a fingerprint magnet.

lilbroRx4504d ago

Your alone thier. I bough tthe Wii U over the other console specifically for the gamepad.

Its also hardwired into the requirements for modes games on the console.

Dropping it would be like Sony dropping the Cell from the PS3.

deafdani4504d ago

Nope. While it's true that the gamepad has been largedly neglected in the majority of Wii U games to date, it's also the sole reason something like Miiverse is possible.

And Miiverse is a BIG card on the Wii U; probably much bigger than most people realize (especially people without a Wii U console to check it out themselves).

I honestly don't need every single Wii U game to be as unique as Nintendoland or Zombi U; and I actually don't expect that from multiplatform games (changing the way your game plays only to accomodate a single console doesn't make much sense); however, Nintendo themselves SHOULD make more games that use the Gamepad to their favor, even if it's just for small details to improve the game.

Zelda Wind Waker HD was a damn good example of this. The Gamepad was actually optional in that game, but it offered a very improved experience when compared to the Gamecube control - something as simple as having the inventory and the map on your second screen eliminates the need to pause, and makes the game flow better. For me, that's quite a noticeable difference when you play.

So, no, forget about dropping the Gamepad. However, they can still introduce a new model of the Wii U made with cheaper components, and maybe a smaller and cheaper Gamepad as well. That could help reduce the manufacturing price, thus allowing them to cut the price a bit more; similar to what Sony did with the "ultra slim" PS3 (the disk slot slider is one of the components that make that console significantly cheaper to manufacture).

MrPoopyPants4504d ago

In the age of upgrading every year (iPhone, iPad) I think Nintendo, and all consoles, should be ready to change on a whim.

iplay1up24504d ago

The development cycle for most AAA games is 2 years or more and the budget for those games is HUGE. They need a large install base to recupe money invested on those games. so no that will not work

Parapraxis4504d ago (Edited 4504d ago )

Terrible idea.
And people who have the lack of self control and upgrade constantly are also terrible and feeding the problem.

lilbroRx4504d ago (Edited 4504d ago )

That defeats the entire purpose of console. We already have PC's to serve that function.

Consoles are meant to be stable platform made specifically for game and games alone. Sony and Microsfot have twisted that with their media function focus and focus on hardware specs like that makes games better.

Super Mario Bros 1 on the NES is still more fun than 90% of the games that release these days.

wonderfulmonkeyman4504d ago

They're planning one, they just won't release it for another 4 or 5 years.

Metallox4504d ago

I think 3-4 years, considering Wii U's performance.

wonderfulmonkeyman4503d ago (Edited 4503d ago )

Nah. That would be equivalent to pulling a Sega.
They'll let the system run its full 4 to 5 year course before putting out a new one, in order to preserve brand trust.
Maybe even 6, depending on whether or not the Wii U recovers sufficiently.

iplay1up24504d ago (Edited 4504d ago )

Nintendo would not abandon the Wii U yet, but yes I am sure they are at least at the drawing board with the plans for a new console in about 4-5 years.

There are too many 1st party Wii U/3Ds games being developed for them to spread themselves any thinner. Look at Gamecube/Wii/Wii U. They all have their Swansong, albeit Twilight was the Gamecube swan/ it was the same accept the mirror and controls. Skyward was Wii's. They sure as hell are not going to go out of the Wii U business with Smash Bros or Mario Kart.

Nintendo also can not afford to release their next home console without a system seller. Even though Skyward was on the Cube, most people who are Zelda fans wanted the Wii version. I like NSMB, but is very similar to what was done on Wii with HD graphics. Not so much a system seller that showed what the Wii U could do. I love Nintendo land, but most people just think of it as mini games, which it kind of is, but way more in depth.

Nope Nintendo's next console will need some killer 1st party games, which they should start to develop in the next 3 years, so they can release them on their shiny new console.

In the mean time, there are some amazing games out for Wii U and this year Wii U has a killer lineup. I can not wait to see what else Nintendo has coming up, after Smash Bros, Donkey Kong, Bayonetta, Mario Kart, X.

As of right now as someone who likes playing games, I am playing more Wii U right now than ever. My PS4 is a dustball right now, till next month, and then some games are coming out that I REALLY WANT.

R00bot4504d ago

Hopefully their next console can release with a sequel to X. Considering when X is coming out, and assuming the Wii U has at least 4-5 years left it should be possible to release a sequel at or around their next console's release.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer77d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot76d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box76d ago (Edited 76d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno76d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay76d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno75d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK75d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
