Its easy to say "I know the answer!" when your on the sidelines. Its more difficult to admit that the answer isn't simple in this case.

The market hasn't shown up for Nintendo and you can't force them to show up either.

Nintendo has sold the most software and hardware in 2013, the losses in there gaming division are twice as good, as Sony or MS. Yet why arent they dying?

I don't really have a console bias one way or the other, and I definitely wanted a wiiU from the moment I saw it. The issue holding me back has always been the library and I'm not alone. While ninty's gameplay always excels, the atmosphere of their games just doesn't gel with me anymore. Maybe that makes me less of a gamer, I don't know, but the pastel colours and sugary stories just dont appeal anymore. I understand that the big N have a few mature titles on their system, but nothing I can't find better examples of elsewhere. Nintendo titles arent just for kids, but they certainly appeal to kids moreso and until we see more mature experiences, Nintendo is missing out on (a large chunk of) my entire demographic (30-something gamers)

Except they don't aim for kids. They aim for experiences ANYONE can pick up, play and enjoy. Just because it has color and Mario isn't swearing and causing bloodshed doesn't mean it cant be fun. Its a mistake to think Nintendo only aims towards kids. Don't blame them for wanting to include them and let them have something to play while the rest of the world wants to rape, pillage and plunder in a blood stained world.

Gaming is about having fun and if you choose to think that the only way you can have a fun game is if it is rated M (or whatever your respective rating is) than thats your choice but you're ignoring all the people and their beliefs and are disrespecting gaming as a whole.

Hell I love going on a slaughter spree in GTA and don't even get me started on my 900th marathon of demon/dark souls but sitting down and cooping in Mario or ray man or sonic bring just as much fun. Hell early mega man games are still probably the hardest games I've ever played and those are "for kids" (as in rated E)

Summons75....Nintendo's commercials advertising the Wii U, are aimed squarely at children. Period.

Nintendo has a strategy. The same strategy theyve been using for generations: Hook em while theyre young, as kids. Keep em interested as teenagers. Have them pass it on to their kids. The cycle continues.

Now, one could argue this is the very same strategy ALL video game companies use. Sony and Microsoft has done the same. Even PC. BUT....Nintendo has capitalized on it the most.

Ah ok I forgot that I am a little kid who is playing Nintendo games for 20 years. I forgot to grow up too....If I had played sony/microsoft consoles, now I would have grown normally.

You have right, your opinion comes from a serious guy and not a child, probably you play other consoles than nintendo....

I think not focusing on their mature audience as much as they should was and is a problem for Nintendo.

But the biggest problem is their arrogance. They got their heads so far up their own assess that they forgot to show support to their third party developers and that means no games for a console(now I am talking third party wise) so up coming games like dark souls 2, the witcher 3 which covers the mature audience I mentioned early they wont be getting this games and that sucks for a console to say.

I am not bashing Nintendo but they need to get their shit together with the WiiU .

It's not really a shame champ....In fact, it is largely true to a degree....I am the 1st one to declare love for cutesy platformers like Ratchet, Jak & Daxter, Rayman, Mario, Banjo, Donkey Kong, LBP, & the like, & I am a 39yr young male gamer.....I love the platforming genre, & to me the shame is more in the fact that developers have largely ignored & dropped the genre like a hot rock, when it is basically the genre that started console gaming & made it popular,...from Pitfall to Mario on NES...it is a genre that existed from almost the very start, & Mario & Sonic made it become a little more mainstream......But just as we were getting warmed up & 3D platformers were starting to hit there stride with awesome titles like Mario64, Jak & Daxter & Ratchet, etc, etc....by PS3/360, there was barely a 3D platformer made over both consoles lifespan (plenty of 2D ones of varying quality)....

Anyhow, Nintendo have created there own stigma with the whole kiddy thing, as they have kept churning out very kiddy centric characters, themes & worlds with Mario, Donkey Kong & the like. They fail to attract the mature themed stories & gameplay that ALL US gamers enjoy.... Nothing wrong with killing a hooker in GTA after having your way with her, & stealing back your cash after caving her skull in with a bat......NOTHING WRONG with that at all, it is ridiculous fun to 99% of us, then there is 1% that are psychotic, homicidal maniacs anyway, & go out & murder someone, then blame it on drugs & GTA combo...then these games get a bad rap, are labeled murder sims & all that other BS, because some nutjob that would have killed no matter what BS he blamed for his inspiration.... Just like music, stageplays, movies, & tv shows, which have also ALL been blamed for idiotic, homicidal, psychotic beahviour from societies misfits that were wired wrong at birth.
The thing is, Nintendo hasn't bothered to try hard to attract 3rd party developers to make game for there systems...it's like they don't want too much competition to have to market & sell against, on there own system...But they need to get with the times...Get there genius developers to do something new & different & get some new IP's, some with more mature themes onto the system.
I mean, Mario 3D is a great little game, but it pales into insignificance when up against the likes of GTA5, or TLOU... Mario is like a shallow time based arcade game from the 80's (which it is, I guess)....whereas games like TLOU, Far Cry 3, Borderlands, Bioshock, Gears Of War, God Of War, Halo, Unchartered & the like are a complete experience....Mature themed content, with deep involving stories, awesome gameplay & just all round top notch production.... So while playing Mario 3D is great, it feels like I'm playing the same game OVER & OVER, & running through almost identical enviroments as I did in the 80's original...... Would I prefer to see Nintendo make a new IP for me to load up into my Wii-U....Hell yeah man... I'd trade both my Wii-U Mario titles fro that. I want something new & innovative from Miyamoto.

Most games these days feel the same. All the games you named aren't very innovative at all. Far Cry 3 and Bioshock are just FPS games with minor gimmicks. TLOU's gameplay wasn't that innovative especially coming from uncharted and looking at Gears.

That word, innovation, is being thrown around too easily. As more developers arise and more games are being made, it's getting very hard to innovate. The only thing that made those games great (for most of them) were the stories. TLOU had an amazing story and the way it was presented made the game amazing. The gameplay worked well. The gameplay wasn't anything new or amazing, just an update to what already existed in modern day 3rd person shooters.

Nintendo has been putting out new IPs here and there, the most notable being Xenoblade. They have a few more IPs hidden away in Japan, like Reginleiv. Don't Xenoblade, The Last story, and Pandora's tower all count as Nintendo IP?

Anyway, when it comes to Mario, nintendo seemed to have blitzed the franchise by putting several games out almost yearly. There were 2 New mario 2d games and 2 3d land/world games for the 3ds and wii-u. It just feels that the gap for those games was small. Then there's the new luigi bros. update.

Wow this article really sucks.
Yes, Nintendo is losing close to $240 million...out of how much money they have in total? For all we know, that could be chump-change to them. I disagree with most of what this guy is saying.

1) Nintendo should stop aiming for kids.

I can see why people think that this is a problem. I've seen a ton of kids not wanting anything to do with a Nintendo console because it doesn't have Cod of Halo. Most kids today grew up on the ps2/Gc/Xbox. So they technically missed Nintendo's glory days. I'm sure that a lot of these people writing these doom articles are people who didn't grow up on Nintendo and will probably NEVER PLAY A NINTENDO BRAND GAME EVEN IF THEY WENT 3rd PARTY. The kids/family market doesn't really exist anymore thanks to the rise of tablets. Around my area, tons of toy stores have just died out. Many kids aren't playing with toys anymore and instead playing with tablets.

2) Nintendo should stop with the RPG genre.

This part made me shake my head, cementing what I said in the first part of this thing. That most gamers never grew up on Nintendo and would probably not play a Nintendo game. So you want a port of Cod and BF on the 3ds? REALLY? Those games are on every other system already. Those players wouldn't play those games on the 3ds anyway, so it'd be a waste.

3) Make better use of the hardware.

Hardware isn't really the problem. The wii-u shouldn't be too hard to develop for, it's just that developers don't really want to put too much effort into making special features and gimmicks to accommodate the tablet controller. Then there's the cost of making these high quality games. I honestly don't think Nintendo was prepared to jump to HD. I think they actually lack the resources to make games themselves on a timely basis, this is why they're asking Namco and other developers to make games for them (even at the cost of renting out their IPs). The only good I can see from their strategy is...Starfox being made by Platinum games.

What would've been amazing is if they allowed ds/3ds emulation on the wii-u. Play your handheld games on the big screen! Now THAT would make good use of the hardware.

4) Bring in mobile developers
Are there free mobile games on PSN and XBLA?
Usually free to play mobile games are nothing more than pay walls to squeeze money out from their victims. I don't think accepting mobile developers is a good idea. Plus people can play those free mobile games on their phones. No need for a console at all.

5) Is the wii-u worth it?

This is the only thing I agree with. The console is out for a while and they don't have any amazing games out for it yet. While Mario 3d world was fun, it wasn't an amazing spectacle that was Mario Galaxy. Games like Smash bros and Mario kart should've been on out on the system since last year! The wait has been much longer compared to their past consoles, but the wait is usually worth it. When Smash bros 4 drops, the wii-u will sell a lot of units.

6) Marketing

There isn't really much to complain about this. Advertise more I guess. Nintendo is a household name and consumers trust that brand with their kids. Although most kids are given tablets, there are still some parents out there who'd rather buy their kids a Nintendo console rather than an ipad. That crowd is slowly shrinking though.

Starfox, Pilotwings, F-Zero and Metroid. Bring back the SNES glory days :)

I've been saying that from the start, I brought Nintendo to play their classic Zelda metroid star fox Mario cart and punch out games. For them to only have a blitz of Mario and Luigi games and none of their classics at this point is beyond me.
