Why Nintendo Will Survive 2014.

Nintendo has released their financial reports for the fiscal year ending in March of 2014, and it seems the Wii U has missed its sales target by a wide margin. Additionally, Nintendo has cut its 3DS sales expectations from nearly 18 million, to around 13 million. Following the release of the disappointing sales figures, much of the games press has taken to singing the same song they’ve sung for over 20 years. “Nintendo is doomed, and should stop making consoles.” However, it seems everyone has forgotten one critical piece of information: No other company in this industry can surprise us like Nintendo can.

"Why Nintendo Will Survive 2014"

The 3DS is killing everything in sales? The Wii U can flat out flop and Nintendo will still be doing okay.

Eonjay4510d ago

Yeah, they just reported today that their $900 million in expected profits are now looking like $200 million in operating losses. So no, 3DS did nothing but to break the fall, but they still fell through the floor.

NatureOfLogic4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

I agree. Nintendo should just kill WiiU. 3DS is not enough to save WiiU. Nintendo did this to themselves. Without third party support or casuals, what did they expect? Nintendo and Sony should join. That would be great for both.

Rainstorm814510d ago

I think they should redesign the WiiU console and relaunch it with a name change Wii 2 perhaps

I think that alone could change their fortunes, that and stop being lazy.....2 Zelda games before a proper WiiU zelda is blasphemy ..... and dont get me started on the WiiU Upgaded versions of Mario Wii and 3D World

wonderfulmonkeyman4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

@ NatureOfLogic & Rainstorm81:
You obviously haven't learned anything from Sega's saga of broken brand trust and multiple console abandonment's.

Dropping the Wii U's current design would destroy consumer trust and would only harm them further.
A re-branding for the name might be doable, but changing the system's innards itself would only screw over the millions who've already bought one.

Furthermore, the fanbase for Nintendo games is NOT on Sony or Microsoft systems, so joining with either one would only kill Nintendo off faster.
In fact, fanboys of both systems regularly use Nintendo franchises as a joke, especially when talking about how tired they are of repeated releases.[despite, hypocritically, how many sports games , Need for Speed clones, and same-shit-shooters release on a yearly basis under new names from third parties that these same people lap up gladly because of better graphics and changes to story/characters/world.]
Nintendo franchises wouldn't sell to these die-hard haters; they'd only scoff and walk over to the next gore-fest game with an M slapped on the box.

No, Nintendo's issues right now are the same issues they've had since the Wii U's release:

Lack of first-party big-bang titles.

Lack of viral advertisement that really catches attention.[remember the days of "Get N or Get Out" and "Wii would like to play"?]

Lack of usage out of the majority of their other franchises.[Starfox, F-Zero, and many others are still waiting in the wings for more attention]

Finally, too much casual/kid/family focus.
This isn't the Wii generation anymore; the casual ship has sailed and it's now time to focus back on the core again, the core that has since grown up alongside the Wii and is wanting more out of their Wii U.

Rainstorm814510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

Not the inside but physical look like the slim NES SNES or even remodeled Wii....i think the Wii U physically looks too much like the Wii, that combined with the name creates confusion among casual gamers with many Wii accessories with the Wii name on the market

Countless times I've brought my wiiu over my relatives houses for them to ask Nintendo has a new console? And they own the Wii!

Nintendo has always been a company that introduces people to gaming since the NES....I grew up with Mario and now my daughter plays Mario on Wii U....that's their niche and they should continue that but they need to expand and compete with Sony and MS....Ninty is at their best when rising to the competition

As far as haters are concerned...they are a loud vocal minority....if any main Mario game released on a PS or Xbox console it would sell well but I don't think Nintendo should be 3rd party

I agree with ur reasons as well

Benjaminkno4510d ago

Yeah, 2014 is fine... it's the following 2 years I'm a little concerned with.

diepdiep4510d ago

Nintendo proved critics wrong numerous times. I'm looking at 2014 as the Wii U's redemption year with its very promising lineup.

ShowGun9014510d ago

i hope so, but i think now that the 2 "hardcore" systems are out, each with better specs than the wii-u, they are going to find it next to impossible to rustle up 3rd party support... if they had utilised their year head start properly and had an enormous install base by now, they could convince developers based on numbers alone. i hope first party titles alone can sell the system, but not being able to play video game staples like the new battlefield, GTA or assassins creed on the wii-u will definetly hurt it in the eyes of consumers. basically nintendos ultimatum is this: "if you want our games, thats awesome, but you won't be getting anybody else's!" that being said, best of luck, ninty! i'd hate for that large of a piece of my childhood to go under...

Jay70sgamer4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

Wasn't this the same thing said 8 years ago ...more powerful yadda yadda and who won that generation .....it's too early to say who is gonna win or lose .......also nintendo has billions in the bank lets no get to excited on nintendo folding lol not gonna happen ...if the wii u fails to move a great amount of units with this years line up then it may be game over but it's way too early to cast anyone's fate

ShowGun9014510d ago

i never said nintendo would go under, i said the wii-u would be the next gamecube... also, even though the wii sold more units last gen, SO FAR, i wouldn't say they won, because interest in the system burned out too quickly, sales dropped off DRAMATICALLY, and thats when the ps3 and 360 started to catch up... its not that they're more powerful, its that they are using that leverage to pretty much elbow out the wii-u as a possibility for 3rd party ports... if they are advanced graphically enough to look good on a ps4, it wont run on the wii-u... THATS whats gonna hurt the wii-u, and also the fact it doesn't have a gimmic everybodys gotta try like the wii did, but either way nintendo will probably be alright.

snookiegamer4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

Of course Nintendo will be okay for 2014. Nintendo can afford to write off the Wii U and even afford one more console failure before they hit rock bottom.

Nintendo will bounce back with the next console. Let's hope they kill off the Wii brand next time around.

I like the name Famicom 8, the number eight meaning infinity ;)

wonderfulmonkeyman4510d ago

Nah, either call it the Nintendo Power Tower or keep the U from Wii U and make it stand for Ultra Nintendo Entertainment System.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS51d ago (Edited 51d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

Well dayum lol. Old agent orange pissing off every industry and nation.

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure76d ago (Edited 76d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer77d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot77d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box77d ago (Edited 77d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno77d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay77d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno76d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK76d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
