I disagree. The PS3 hasn't even been out for 2 full years yet. Sony isn't going to come out with another Playstation console until 2011 or 2012 at least. Sony has released a new console every 6 years so far. Sony isn't going to release a PS4 in 2 and a half years from now, that's crazy.

Microsoft will release it's new console first most likely because it's the oldest, and Sony and Nintendo most likely will release their new consoles a year later. Microsoft really screwed up the console cycle with the Xbox 360 coming out in 2005 and the short lived Original Xbox.

To keep up with the PS3, Microsoft needs to release another Xbox console.

I don't know why in the heck Microsoft chose to build a console that was only meant to be out in the market for 4-5 years. I mean seriously, the Original Xbox was only out on the market for 4 years and here comes Microsoft releasing another console possibly in 2 years, and the sad thing about it is that Microsoft didn't even support the Original Xbox after the 360 came out, and I bet money that Microsoft will do the same thing with the 360 when the 720 or whatever it's going to be called comes out.

Microsoft doesn't care about it's gamers, they just want people to buy the newest and latest Xbox console when it's released. I hope that people start to wake up and realize that Sony is the console manufacturer that is going to be there for you for the long haul. Sony is all about the 10 year lifecycles and that's the way it should be done. And the good thing about Sony is that they actually support there consoles after new ones are released.

Microsoft said that they might release Xbox 720 in 2012. So, giving them the benefit of the doubt (in that they won't release it next year), it's kind of realistic, considering DVD9 only lasts that long. Considering how PS3 has potential for reading 200GB discs, HDD out of the box, WiFi and 1Gbps, it could last 10 years like most PlayStations. However, PS4 might launch in PS3's seventh or eighth year, which would be 2013 or 2014. I doubt PS3 could last until 2016 on its own merits.

meh id like to see a new system in 2010 for the xbox had it since day 1 and I like an update every 4-5 years....dont like to stay on the same machine for over half a decade.....

It would probably be the best idea for MS as well since it may be harder for Sony to bounce back with another machine and give MS even more time to establish a fan base again....possibly 2+ years this time around.....

So yea it is most likely gonna happen and all MS needs to do is keep support for their 360 and keep backwards compatibility and everything should be fine

Developers still can't afford to master games in 1080P multi platform wise their not ready to make the next step yet.
In 2016 that's when the next gen console race after this one begins.
MS can afford to make the Xbox 720 in a hurry because it will make their costumers and fans mad and they don't have the technology yet to make the next step.
Sony however does bigger blu-ray discs coming, OLED TVs the next step in HD Entertainment, bigger everything.
Sony is in a better position technologically to make the next step but right now they want a 10 year console however it doesn't mean that console makers and developers can't dream though.
360 is losing enough money.
PS3 is still growing.
Wii needs better games to compete this gen.
Everyone needs to improve.

I think it will depend on how profitable each one is come the end of 2009. The cycle must restart someday.

Screws over game developers as much as it does consumers. They spend ridiculous amounts of money upgrading their technology and developing new game engines etc for the new platforms. If they don't have enough time to make games before they have to update everything again they won't be able to cover their costs and make money.

It's especially hard for the small developers and if they start to release new consoles every 2 - 3 years the only ones that will be able to keep up will be the big developers like EA

OLED, their it is, lighter, easier to ship, better picture at all degrees, i herd alot about that stuff, you can even bend the screen without changing the picture. awesome technology there, thanks for bringing that up, i almost forgot about it.

Im ready for a new console in 2010, i have had my 360 since launch and 5 years is enough, one comment i would like to make, people keep on mentioning the fact that sony supported the ps2 where is microsoft dropped the xbox, i think the fact that sony borrowed 90 billion dollars for investement of the blu ray technology has a lot to do with this, and the fact that they are not breaking even on the sales of the ps3 might also be a factor, they didnt sack good old Ken for nothing

Unless Sony dumps it due to lack of sales or inability to over take the 360 by the time Microsoft launches it's next console. Which according to Microsoft is 2010. I don't think your going to see either console manufacturer jump on the next gen until there is a compelling reason to do so. Namely GPU/CPU on same chip or one of those taking over the job of the other. This is the next major step in platform cost reduction. Both AMD,Intel, and Nvidia are rushing torwards this in the hopes of saving the PC as a gaming platform. Nintendo is going to stick with the Wii as long as possible. The problem they have is that most likely the casual gamer is not going to buy another console just because if they are still happy with the wii. I think Nintendo is going to have to rejoin the console war. I also predict that we will see another player enter the console race.

If AMD, Intel, Nvidia cannot save PC gaming then they will have little choice but to join the console war to stay relevant. Yes I know AMD and Intel will always be making processors but it was PC gaming that always drove the demand for increases in speed. You can have a 5 year old computer running non gaming applications no problem.

I also think that what the U.S. economy is doing by then is a factor. If the U.S. slides into a depression that some are predicting then the current crop of console may weather the storm a little longer so that the launch of the next systems is at a more reasonable price.

The only people worried about next gen consoles coming out in 2010/11 are ps3 owners. They paid huge amount on a wasteful piece of technology which hasnt even given anything worthwhile yet. WHereas people like me who picked up 360s on launch or early 2006 have already used it and enjoyed next gen gaming for past 2+ years. Another 2 more years shud be good enough and then time to jump to the next best thing.

I was pc enthusiast once, and used to upgrade vgas almost every year. Switching between nvidia and ATIs. Last 2 were both nvidia 6800 GT and 7950GX2. Got burned on the last one and luckily bought 360 at almost the same price as a high end vga. Hvnt upgraded my pc in last 2 years. I'm a reformed gamer now. Thanks

As long as the new Xbox is about 100 times better than the 360 than I'll be in line Day 1. I don't want a crap upgrade like the gamecube and wii.

As much as I am a Sony fan, if Microsoft releases a Xbox 720 before 2010 and if it's much more powerful than 360 and PS3, I would certainly buy it (IF there are nice games too, though).

Making a new console soon is probably the best bet for MS since Sony won't be able to release a new console at that time. They still didn't get enough money from PS3 to make a PS4. MS has the money, so the smart move is going for a new console as soon as possible.

Problem is, the risk is they get some of their fans angry for abandoning a console again. Most gamers will probably forgive them, though...

I look for Nintendo to come out with both a new console and portable before the end of 2010. They will try and run both the Wii and the new console together. The Wii wii be for the family and the new console for the next-gen gamer. The portable will be the DS advanced or with ever they want to call it, it may come out as early as late 2009.

Microsoft will be next with a push for the holidays in 2010 but will be delayed until 2011. I will go out on a limb and say they will enter the portable market at the same time. Both the console and the portable will be sold together. This will not be a bundle but a whole package deal to enter the portable market with a bang.

The above two are the only ones that are in a position to try and enter a new console by 2010. There also the only ones to have anything to gain by doing it.

Sony will start talk about a new console in 2010 but will keep saying that the PS3 has a 10 year life cycle. Sony needs to make there money back and then some on the PS3 before they bring out something like the PS4. The only thing we will see out of Sony in 2010-11 is maybe a new PSP just to get a little of the lime light away from Nintendo and Microsoft. Although I think the PSP has a lot longer life left in it then that, it may be a good PR marketing move for them. Look for the PS4 no earlier then 2013 and no later then 2015. I know that’s a big window but it all depends on the horse power under the hood of the other two consoles.

Wii is outselling everyone, 360 is enjoying its lead on Sony and in the online market, and Sony seems like it is just starting to get the ball rolling.

Yes, the technology exists to make a more powerful system, but the Big 3 seem fairly content at this time. I think MS will probably jump first if/when PS3 catches up or surpasses the 360. Sony, I'm not so sure they will hurry to match MS because their systems have a history of aging quite well. I wouldn't be surprised to see Sony wait a year or two after MS' next system. As far as Nintendo, well they are sitting pretty right now, and with their corner on the "casual" market, I don't know as they will try anything too quickly. I think they realize their casual gamers aren't going to be as eager to buy another system as your hardcore gamers.

If anyone even possibly agrees that it is a good idea for the next round of systems to come out in 2010 then they are not real gamers. With the amount of money that has gone into these systems for the past couple years, why would anyone honestly want to spend another 500 bucks just to have another rushed out P.O.S.? Especially the Microsoft supporters. Did you all magically forget the way that MS F***** you all over by putting out the 360 4 years after the original? And now that I think about it, i'm sure that the enitre install base of the Xbox1 didn't buy there sytem at launch so that means that a majority of Xbox owners didn't even get to enjoy having a still suported system for four years at all.

MS completely abandoned the Xbox to rush out an internally flawed system just to beat Nintendo and Sony to the punch and 19 million of you ate that s**t up so far.

...anytime soon. The PS3 is just beginning to tap its huge potential, with the Blu-ray gamble paying off, and sales finally outpacing its arch-rival Xbox 360. Sony's heavy hitter franchises haven't even seen the light of day yet, and with the exception of Metal Gear Solid 4 this June, we won't be seeing the PS3 in full bloom until deep into 2009, with GT5 and Final Fantasy among many others. Unless Nintendo goes Full HD/Online in a new console to huge success in the near future, and unless the 360 successor releases by 2010 (which would be very risky for MS by the way) to great success, I can't see Sony even thinking of a new Playstation anytime before 2012 at the earliest (really more like end of 2013/beginning of 2014). I would bet on a new PSP (to compete with the new DS and the possible portable HD Xbox?) long before a PS4....

I wonder what direct x 10 will bring so far we are only using directx 9 level of graphics. Normal mapping and a few other things are the crown jewels of direct x 9. If the xbox 360 comes out too soon they run the risk of not even being able to support the next big step. The RSX could have been an 8800 gts if the PS3 had went with a dvd drive yet they would have scarf iced their formula. An RSX would have just crushed the xbox 360 graphically since it is suppose to be a direct x 10 part and all of those cards come with crazy amounts of ram. I've been keeping up with whats happening in the chip biz though. AMD and IBM are making some tech together main the new die shrinks yet intel Is coming and they will jump back into the console game too much money is being made here. Nvidia is not really getting too much competition from ati yet those guys can be quite good. The one they are (nvidia) worried about are actually intel which is weird right? Well if you look at how they stomped AMD then you will see they are no joke. But hey you know whats to good thing about those two going at each other!

Price war! and even more power! The new systems are coming but if they can hold off so that we can ride the wave of new stuff that is coming out then next gen will be sweet. Yet if people have a hard time seeing the difference then lots of people will keep there xbox 360s and PS3s.

I know I didn't talk about nintendo much but their next system is going to be easy to make once the prices do fall. we may get a Wii with direct x 10 graphic and some for solid state storage device. Hell Iomega has 250G mini drives and you know they need money!

Anyways, I seriously doubt Nintendo will by releasing a console in 2010 due to the high sales of the Wii today. It's been selling strong for almost 2 years now.

I also doubt that Sony will release a new console in 2010 because of how powerful the system is already. There's nothing much left to add to a new Playstation. I bet they'll keep the PS3 out for ANOTHER nex-gen era.

PS3 is the only true next-gen system the Wii and 360 shouldn't even be considered next-gen consoles. First off the Wii and 360 still use an old format called DVD which only holds 4.7 gbs of data or 9gb on dual layer disc, the PS3 uses Blu-ray which holds 25gb of data or 50gb on dual layer disc. The Wii has no hdmi port which is necessary for the future while the 360 has an hdmi port 1.2 and the PS3 has an hdmi port that supports 1.3a. The differences first off 1.2 supports 16.7 million colors while 1.3a supports over 1 billion colors. 1.2 cant use Dolby True HD or DTS HD Master Audio and it cant support 7.1 surround sound, while on the other hand hdmi 1.3a supports all that plus more. hdmi 1.2 can only support 1920x1080p60fps maxed out while 1.3a supports 2560x1600p60fps maxed out. An added bonus about 1.3a also supports x.y.Color and Deep Color which 1.2 dosent. 1.3a also has a way higher transfer rate and bit rate compared to 1.2. Also the 360 has 3 core processors which is old news considering Intel makes Quad Core Processors while the PS3 has the revoluntionary Cell processor which has 8 and the Wii has a weak processor we dont even nedd to talk about.You cant even upgrade the 360 HD unless u pay for an overpriced 120 piece of crap HD on th PS3 u can upgrade your HD limitleesly. The 360 or the Wii doesnt even have an HD movie playback drive the PS3 does. The PS3 is built stronger than both the Wii and 360 it can handle more heat and cold and still not break down. Also the PS3 firmware constantly upgrades the system and by far has the most multimedia compatibilities compared to the Wii and 360. The RSX GPU can handle DirectX 10 level details and graphics the 360 GPU can't. The PS3 is truly the only system worthy of being called next gen and is the most future proof console that ever existed.

If Microsoft does not release a new console soon ps3 is gonna blow it out of the water. Every single week the Playstation 3 outsells the 360 even though the ps3 is more expensive. There are still plenty of great games coming to the ps3 which can only boost its sales even more. Not to mention the 360's inferior hardware. Microsoft has to release a console soon to stay in the market. Nintendo is going to want this to last as long as possible to rake a huge profit. Sony is just now starting to take off and with huge games on the way they will be selling well for the next couple years. The ps3 will be able to contend with nextgen consoles so even if the 720 comes out ps3 will be able to outsell at least the 720 until there own new console comes out. Microsoft is in the worst position right now and they have to do something to help them.

The 360 and the DS both came out in '04, so 6 years later I think they'll be ready, especially since you consider they both came out just 3 years after the GBA/Xbox. The PSP came out in early '05, so they'll probably be ready, too. However, the Wii and the PS3 came out in late '06, so I don't think releasing their next-gen consoles in 2010, only 4 years later, is a very wise choice.
