Pathfinder Online's Ryan Scott Dancey defends MMO subscriptions

Ryan Scott Dancey, project leader on the upcoming Pathfinder Online MMO and former GM for CCP, has defended subscription models for online games in a guest post on MMORPG.com.

Speaking out after recent criticism of The Elder Scrolls Online's model, Dancey highlighted the continued success of subscription plans, emphasising the need to combine traditional models with micro-transactions.

I agree with the points being made and yeah the Subscription model works and after revealing the budget of the game they'll be doing the subscription model for a while.

But to justify it to the Console gamer isn't really going to be easy. But yes games like Realm Reborn have a very strong community and subscription basis right now. But I think they might need to consider reducing the price a bit for console users. Or else they'll be seeing a massive decrease in subscriptions unless they're able to keep the game up to date with content to justify the subscription basis.

I've played the Beta and the game is designed for consoles... The combat and the overall feel of the game has a bit of a controller need to it. I know a lot of my friends feel the same way playing the game on the PC and it's a bit irritating.

Also the problem with this game is they're selling the MMO community but they still need to sell the Elder Scrolls fans a bit more because it does feel like an ES game but they have gone a bit dark with info on the game.

Well imo ESO is one of those games that feels like it should be f2p, it's horrible. It feels to me like they took an elder scrolls game, modded it to be multiplayer, slapped a sub fee and a 60 dollar price tag and considered it an mmo. 1As for ARR, I feel the game would be better without console users...the end game content is near impossible to play with a bunch of ps3 players. It doesn't work well on ps3...I had a person tell me he couldn't see the boss, then told me he wouldn't put a skill on his bars because there was no room. The world of Eorzea would be better without console gamers imo.

That's not true. The PS3 is limited, but there are option to change some settings (just as you would on a PC that wasn't super up to date). I am in no way saying that PS3 is the most optimal way to play, but I tank on PS3 and I do a damn good job.

As far as the controller goes, they added MORE ways to make it smooth; however, I never had a problem with it. If your mechanics are good then there shouldn't be a problem. It's the same with a keyboard once you have skills past key "6". I tried to play GW2 recently and I just couldn't play with a keyboard after playing ARR with a controller for so long.

Pay To Play >>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>> F2P

There isn NOT one decent MMO which is F2P.

I think Neverwinter is the best F2P though. Strong combat, nice visuals. The only thing I didn't like was that almost all weapon models looked the same, and there were no other towns, just one central HUB. And idk there is something about just playing a F2P game where I just keep thinking I'm playing a watered down product no matter what (even if the game is good).

Neverwinter is pay to win and combat gets boring (as TR it is stay in stealth holding mouse button using encounter to refill stealth bar...)

Rift and Tera are two decent F2P MMOs.

RaiderZ would have been a decent MMO but it lacks content and Maiet has no intention making new content.

TERA is flat out pay to win and Rift was great until F2P.

Both of them where better during subcription era.
