Even without Plus, Don't Starve is worth playing on PS4

If you happen to be a PlayStation 4 owner who has yet to play Klei Entertainment's excellent Don't Starve, you are in for a real treat this week. PlayStation Plus members in particular should just go ahead and download it blindly since it's available for free as a recent addition to the service.

I'm a huge fan of the PC version. It's definitely worth playing. Very unique, very challenging, great atmosphere. I hope they end up adding the free "The Screecher" mod that they recently added to PC.

Not enjoying it to be honest. Glad it was free cause it would have been a waste of money if I had paid even $1 for it.

dantesparda4528d ago

i dont get what im supposed to do, so im not liking it to much right now either. Can somebody explain it to me?

OrangePowerz4528d ago

@Dante

Basically survive. Forst you want to find something to eat like Berries and make an axe so you can get firewood for a basic camp where you can also cook. You should also build the machine as soon as possible so you have more options on what to build. You might want to look at some basic guides that explain the beginning a bit further.

You basically... wait for it!... craft :D (which is surprising for an indie game ^^ /s)

IMHO, it's fun until you learn to survive... After that is just the same game over and over (get food by day... eat and wait at night) with different characters.

Maybe I just suck at it, though :)

EDIT: Would have loved to see Mark of the Ninja or Shank on the PS4, instead!

dedicatedtogamers4528d ago

You're supposed to survive (first major hurdle) and then go out and explore the world (much bigger hurdle). You'll miss at least 70% of the game's content if you only stay in a small area and build a farm to survive. Plus, there are a lot of technologies to discover, so there's another reason to go out there and look for the rarer items to build the more powerful devices.

Im loving the game!

But I have a big problem right now. I'm about 14 days in and my base has been invaded with eye balls. I can't kill them what must I do.

robtion4528d ago

Great game, very addictive.

1nsomniac4528d ago (Edited 4528d ago )

Doesn't work well with a gamepad at all. Very disappointing on the PS4 IMO would of been a much better fit & more enjoyable on the Vita I think.

GarrusVakarian4528d ago (Edited 4528d ago )

It works fine with a controller.....i don't understand how any half-competent person would have trouble with it.....

Left stick to move character, left trigger to bring up crafting menu, right trigger to bring up inventory and left stick to navigate inventory.

What's so hard about that? 5 mins with the game and you should be familiar with the controls.

1nsomniac4528d ago (Edited 4528d ago )

Except it switches from left stick to right stick intermittently depending on which view your in (inventory mode or normal mode). Also you would assume that like all games like this that turn up on consoles from PC the d-pad is to scroll through items which is not the case on this & ends up using or dropping a random item from your inventory.

After some playtime, yes you could get used to this but it all seems counter productive & buttons aren't used at all that could of been.

Also even on my 42" TV the items/icons are tiny & I end up having to get up & stand 3ft in front of the telly to see what they are. I just think it would work better all-round ona handheld close to your face & with touchscreen controls rather than 3 entirely separate directional controls for 3 separate menu systems.

robtion4528d ago

You CAN play it on the vita with remote play and it is great.

1nsomniac4528d ago

The only reason I would want to play it on the Vita is for the touchscreen which wouldn't work via remote play so what would be the point of playing on vita instead of PS4?

robtion4527d ago

The touchscreen works via remote play, it brings up the map. Also means I can play it when the TV in the lounge room is in use.

Necro_5594528d ago

It works better on controller actually. Like almost all games like this.

dedicatedtogamers4528d ago

I think a Vita port is inevitable, and I - personally - am going to wait for the Vita version. Touch screen controls for inventory management (and/or for automated harvesting i.e touch and hold down on a tree to chop it, touch and hold on a rock to break it apart, etc) would be phenomenal.

robtion4527d ago

Sure, whatever floats your boat ;) Could be a long wait though? Plenty of other games to keep you busy for now though.

Aghashie4527d ago

I remote played the game on my vita last night. Controls are almost the same as the ds4, except that u use the rear touchpad to spin the map/view and uses a small tap on the touchscreen to open the map.

Icons where very small and difficult to read. Everything else was fine.

Apart from the differences above, it was almost the same experience. So honestly, don't expect the game to be different or better on a Vita.

Tried it this morning, wasn't for me.

GarrusVakarian4528d ago

Same here, i was looking forward to giving it a chance but im not really fond of games which have permanent deaths/resets. I like progressing and the sense of accomplishment of earning things in games.....having them taken away makes me not want to do it all over again lol.

Detoxx4527d ago

It's not a survival game without the perma death, look at Day Z

admiralvic4527d ago

While I agree with a lot of what you're saying, the removal of permanent death not only contradicts the point of the game, but also the makes the title silly. I mean, the point is to survive (aka not starving), which isn't that thrilling, hard, or impressive if you can simply correct whatever you did wrong the first time.

FunAndGun4528d ago

I'm hooked!

Would have most likely never checked this game out if it wasn't for Plus.
