Titanfall: Why I Support 6v6

Justin from Pixel Gate writes:

So the internet has been pretty vocal about their opinions on how Titanfall will only support 12 players with the game supporting 6v6 battles. Sure, I can understand some of the dislike towards that implementation, but I’m also totally for that approach. We’ll probably see a more tight, squad-based, and most likely a more tactical video-game and something to usher in a new era in the FPS genre.

I doubt the game performance would be stable with 64 players are controlling mechs at once plus the other stuff happening

Manio314540d ago

Agreed. I'm all for the 6v6 approach. I think we'll see a more tactical, fast-paced game. I'm all for that.

Gazondaily4540d ago

If you read Respawn's reasoning, you will know that higher llayer counts just meant there was too much mayhem.

6v6 is perfect for a game like this. Not only does the game ensure that youre always doing something, it also allows skilled players to not get hampered by the ineptitude of other not so skilled players or those who refuse to do objectives. In short, you can beast in this game and make a difference.

nukeitall4540d ago (Edited 4540d ago )

I'm all for a fun game, and I will decide that when the game is released.

Co-ordinating a lot of players is minimally console resources, but more with server issues. Since MS is providing massive and untapped amount of dedicated servers with their enterprise class Azure cloud that rivals Amazon, I highly doubt it was a choice based on available resources from either console or cloud.

Anyone that understand networks know this to be true. If you still don't believe, look at MAG with 256 player count on the PS3 with more limited memory than Xbox 360 all the while having the bigger OS memory foot print!

Now say again?

So it all comes down to game play design and I'm leaning towards smaller player count and smaller maps with more action, which sounds like Titanfalls is right up my alley to replace Gears of War.

I never enjoyed BattleField with massive maps and huge player counts. It was mostly run around for ages, then get sniped from a mile away.

Not my cup of tea, but it doesn't mean it isn't a good game. Just not a game *I* enjoyed. Clearly it is critically acclaimed games, sans the technical issues.

pompombrum4540d ago (Edited 4540d ago )

Exactly.. 6v6 puts more emphasis on teamwork and unity. Lets be honest, if it was say 30v30, you'd have two teams of 10 snipers camping on rooftops and the other 20 running around like headless chicken. Higher player count doesn't necessarily mean better.

ShwankyShpanky4540d ago

@Septic:

>> it also allows skilled players to not get hampered by the ineptitude of other not so skilled players or those who refuse to do objectives.

Huh, my thoughts would be the opposite... on a 6-man team, one "inept" means 16% of your team is inept. On a 12-man team, one "inept" means only 8% of the team is inept. And if it's going the other way, where only 16% of your team is competent, in a 12-man team at least you'd have two "competents" to do the heavy lifting, instead of one doing it on their own.

Gazondaily4540d ago

@Shawnky

That's not how it really works in reality though. There have been many games where I have had to carry my team to victory. Now, I'm not dependant on 11 other players.

Let's turn that formula on its head. One skilled player in a team comprising of 5 other scrubs for instance, stands a better chance of making a difference.

It has happened all too often to me online; playing MW2, many a time, when playing without my friends, I was relegated to doing the objectives when my 'team' just decided to completely ignore objectives. So they serve their purpose of being cannon fodder as I go and execute the objective. I'm sure others have had similar experiences.

Obviously, if you come across an all-round skilled enemy team, you're fudged in any case.

pompombrum4540d ago (Edited 4540d ago )

@Shwanky Doesn't work like that, I used to carry my friends on Halo. Maybe 6v6 might be pushing it a bit for a single person to carry a team but you can make a much bigger difference on games designed for smaller battles.

64 players would be extreme wouldn't it? I don't think they intended to go that far. 8 V 8 is what I was lookin at.

Though I still think 6 v 6 players is still weak he did say the AI and other mechs running around will make up the action.

If that's the case then the AI better on point in the game.

P0werVR4540d ago

As a CS gamer back in the days, I always love them bots. Last I heard they're using Cloud Computing for AI. Things just got interesting.

TheSaint4539d ago

There are numbers between 12 and 64 you know. Doesn't have to be 64 it could be 12 v 12.

truefan14540d ago (Edited 4540d ago )

In all seriouness the main complainers are PS4 fans who probably weren't going to be playing Titanfall anyway. The best multiplayer console experiences I have had were with with smaller teams, Halo, COD4, Gears of War. Battlefield with 32 vs 32 is still slow paced, its about a balance of size and scope. All in all, I'm still preparing for Titanfall.

TheEnigma3134540d ago

How do you know it isn't pc owners complaining?

legionsoup4540d ago

Not that it matters, but I have both next gen systems, and this is pretty disappointing for me.

Why? Because Titanfall is online only. How is a game that is budgeted to do only one thing not doing it with more options? I don't care if we don't have 32 vs 32, but 6 vs 6 just seems really low. Flex the console. Flex the maps. Do something great. I'm tired of games being rushed out an unfinished (Forza and Killer Instinct).

If you are forgoing the single player, make the online the best, most robust thing I've seen so far.

6 vs 6 doesn't sound like that.

P0werVR4540d ago

Forza was rushed?!...your comment proves you haven't even played the game.

legionsoup4540d ago

PowerVR - my N4G name is the same as my Xbox360/One name. Look me up (LegionSoup). I have Forza, Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, and Ryse.

In terms of Forza, what is there is excellent. The graphics, gameplay, etc. However, what is missing is weird. It has hundreds of fewer cars than the last Forza (on last gen). When I buy a new console, I don't expect steps backward like that for a big name title. It has fewer tracks. It has a weird economy that is constantly reminding me that I can pay real money to get things done faster. I have made it to events that I can't play because I need a car that you can only get with paid DLC to race in the event (this is not so much rushed as it is annoying).

legionsoup4540d ago

Also, I plan to get Titan Fall. Mainly because there's not much out there and I want to experience as much "next gen" as possible. However, if this game were 2 years or more into the Xbox One's cycle, I'd probably ignore it, honestly.

HiddenMission4540d ago

@legionsoup
Try to keep in mind the experience on the XB1 has to be as close to identical to the experience offered on the 360...that's the real reason why they went for lower player counts in MP.

I don't believe that the 360 could handle anymore that 6v6 which meant that the XB1 would have to follow suite.

I could be wrong but that is what I think held it back from being even more robust.

hankmoody4540d ago

Just like they did in regards to the XB1's initial proposed set of features. Dudes really know how to kill momentum with their whining.

barb_wire4540d ago

Hmm, I mean sure, some Sony fans are (or might be) complaining.. but honestly why would they? Heck, 'Titanfall' isn't available on the PS platforms.. So, I guess the ones complaining the most are the MS or PC folks.

Why no option for 8v8 and 12v12...?

I could understand a ONlineoNLY with options,, but stuck at 6v6??? @'60$ -c'mon..

lonewolfjedi4540d ago

yeah that's what I would want to know and it also me leaves wondering how many game modes are there for this small player cap

Eonjay4540d ago

I think if they said two v two people would still defend it and people would still be upset. You could probably find someone who would play the game if the muliplayer was only one character and even people who would support 0 players.

bessy674540d ago

I'm sure you support and defend Killzone Shadowfall MP and that's 'only' 7v7. When did player count become the premier metric for determining how fun an online shooter is? I'll tell you when: when the biggest upcoming shooter is 6v6 and isn't on PS4.

Eonjay4540d ago

People complained about the Killzone player count and they changed it because pleasing your clientele, the gamer, is top priority.

RadioActiveTwinky4540d ago

Ummm... Killzone Shadowfall has 24 player max.
That is 12v12 not 7v7.

ShwankyShpanky4540d ago

Personally, as much as I'm enjoying KZ:SF MP, I think 7v7 is stupid, only because parties accommodate 8 people. They should have made it 8v8 for "standard" Warzone.

lonewolfjedi4540d ago

so this game went from being nice sized maps, mech fighting and dropping in, people climbing up roofs, jumping everywhere, big battles, people jumping of out spaceships to tight, squad-based, and a more tactical approach.

Although the late 2000s Turok wasn't my favorite, I would love a new entry. Open world survival with shotguns and dinosaurs. Not sure how we'd get the fusion cannon, but that would be pretty sweet too.

MadLad1374d ago

Lol

All of these games are pretty much universally praised. Outside of Timeshift I literally own all of these.

Venoxn4g1374d ago (Edited 1374d ago )

XIII, The Darkness 2, Far Cry: Blood Dragon, Timesplitters: future perfect, Bulletstorm are awesome games

I played them all, they are all good in their own way
I used to be obsessed with FPS games

An ode to Titanfall: The last twitch shooter I'll probably ever enjoy

Windows Central: "Titanfall 1 is being sunset, taken off storefronts by EA. While the servers remain live for now, one has to wonder just how much time it has left. I look back and pay tribute to the last "twitch"-styled shooter I ever truly loved."
