Hands On With Valve's Steam Machine Controller | Game Informer

GI: I remember people laughing when Valve first announced its new controller for the upcoming Steam Machine, but now that I've gotten my hands on the unit, I'm eager to take one home.

For decades the two analog stick controller has been a staple of the gaming landscape, but is it really the ideal way to play every game? Valve doesn't seem to think so. Its new Steam Controller is more of a mouse/keyboard replacement than a traditional controller model. As you can see from pictures of the device, it's a little bulbous, but if feels good in your hands.

I kind of want to buy one just so 20 years from now after it's long since failed I can show it to people with great humor.

PC gamers don't want controllers. And console gamers have no need to ditch 360 controllers for PC. I think this controller is just valves way of stirring the pot and really emphasizing their move to the living room. I seriously doubt this will extend beyond a very niche group.

I'm a PC gamer and I spend a good percentage of my gaming with a pad in my hand (currently DS4) so I'm interested. The hands on have been largely positive.

I hate blanket statements like "PC gamers don't care about pads", it's wildly inaccurate. You only speak for yourself.

kcuthbertson4526d ago

Exactly. I do probably 50% of my gaming on PC and there's a lot of games that just work better with controllers.

Anyone who says that they'd rather play Assassin's creed with a m/k has clearly never played it with a controller.

LAWSON724526d ago

Okay that is why I game the majority of the time on my controller

webeblazing4526d ago

I doubt you have a PC . Its so much hate in every valve article. These console gamers are trying to hard. People are going out of they way in every article to stir people away from steam boxes.

r1sh124526d ago

Personally I dont like it, but some people might.
Ill stick to traditional game controllers.

LAWSON724526d ago

I like the idea but I am not sure how it will feel once I use it so I an still not sure. IMO dont judge it until you try it.

Im not sure about those things.. it looks like the backside of a controller..?!

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing30d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9230d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit30d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing30d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9230d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
