IGN - Alienware Steam Machine First Look

IGN - Smaller and more powerful than a next-gen console and developed in collaboration with Valve.

-Mezzo-4498d ago

Hoping it under $600. But i highly doubt it as it's Alienware.

NukaCola4498d ago

The glowing alien head is about $1200 alone.

Rhaigun4497d ago

They said it would be competitively priced with both consoles, so fingers crossed.

frostypants4497d ago (Edited 4497d ago )

Unless they are willing to sell it at or near production cost, it's not gonna happen.

Silly gameAr4498d ago (Edited 4498d ago )

Waiting for a price. That smaller and more powerful won't matter much if it's not affordable.

mikeslemonade4498d ago (Edited 4498d ago )

Smaller and powerful which it should be because developers optimize their games for consoles. Steam box is a PC just manufactured for the masses that don't want to build a PC. While a console may be weaker in spec wise but what you see on screen will be better than on a steam box.

PSN-JeRzYzFyNeSt4498d ago

if the price is right i will pick this baby up, I'm not a PC gamer but this is the Second steam box I've seen looks good.. i don't like the Controller tho i hope i can use my PS4 controller with it. if i can i will be a PC gamer =))

One thing that does concern me is that i hope Steam machines don't go the way of Phones.
Meaning.. 2 yrs from now.. first gen machines won't run certain games and all that nonsense even tho i feel that coming

mushroomwig4497d ago

Do yourself a favour and build your own system, you'll have much more freedom with the parts and you won't pay an insane price just because of the brand name.

frostypants4497d ago (Edited 4497d ago )

Home builds are the best way to ensure quality (if you know what you're doing), but you often won't save much money. The big PC manufacturers have bulk pricing on their side...when you buy 100,000 CPUs (or anything else) instead of 1, you get a better price.

Alienware notwithstanding though. Their prices are a joke.

Yo Mama4498d ago (Edited 4498d ago )

I don't even know how this is going to work with so many machines with different specs. I thought the whole reason they're making a stream box was to compete in the console market. This kinda defeats the purpose. I can't see console gamers being swayed because don't want to have to keep upgrading play latest games. And I don't see pc gamers being swayed either. They can just keep gaming on their current set up.

Deividas4497d ago (Edited 4497d ago )

Yea I always think the same thing, who is this really for? Def not a pc gamer, at least not me personally as a PC gamer, I have a Crossfire R9 280X and and 8 core FX processor so i know for sure I will not be getting one cause I have no need. And most people that are not PC gameres aleady planning on getting a new console or already have one....And I think a majority of PC gamers do have consoles for all the exclusives as well so they have no need for a portable device...so idk what market this is going after but it will be veryyy interesting to see how this does!

steve30x4497d ago (Edited 4497d ago )

The motherboard , CPU and ram in my computer is three and a half years old , my SSD's are a year old and my GPU is a GTX 680 that I got almost two years ago. I can play all the latest games at maximum settings @ 1080P and it plays as smooth as silk 60FPS+. You dont need to keep upgrading to play the latest games. Thats a load of rubbish.

Deividas4497d ago (Edited 4497d ago )

Actually you do need to keep upgrading unless you spend the amount of money you did. A GTX 680 ($500) 2 years ago was one of the best cards created, and still is considered among the best, yes you spend that much money on one part alone and yes you will not have to upgrade, most people dont have that cash to throw around and get cheaper parts that will not last up to the standard requirements that keep shooting up. So yes you didnt have to upgrade and still dont. I for one got a HD 7870 2 years ago and had to upgrade.

Dude4204497d ago (Edited 4497d ago )

Are you kidding me dude? Just because you upgraded from a 7870 doesn't mean you HAVE to upgrade. A brother of mine is still rocking an HD 5770 and it plays BF4 fine on med settings in 1920x1080. That series is now 4 years and 4 months old, now just imagine somebody still rocking a 5870.

Now my brother wants to upgrade to a GTX 760/R9 270X which costs $250/$230 and can play BF4 just fine on Ultra settings. Doesn't cost much now does it? It all depends on your preferences.

As for me, I was rocking an MSI 560 Ti 1GB for almost 3 years (series is 3 years and 3 months old). I was planning to continue gaming on it as it still did well in all the latest games, but had a fan problem. I sent it in to MSI and they replaced it with a GTX 660 Ti PE 2GB (it only cost me $15), so I'll be good for the next few years

Deividas4497d ago (Edited 4497d ago )

@dude420
Dont compare a graphics card to BF4, its actually one of the most versatile games when it comes to what graphics card can play it, on medium and low settings there are tonsss of card that can play it.

And I persoanlly dont like to play games on medium because if I did I would just use my consoles for everything and call it a day and make things easy. I use my PC as a main gaming rig that plays all games on Ultra with 60+ fps. So yes obviously I dont HAVE to upgrade because GPUS can play games for a long time, but if your a PC gamer, whats the point in playing the games on such low settings? The big advantage of PC gaming is its graphical advantages, and if your not using them, then I dont see much point and kinda ruining the PC experience. You know what I mean?

steve30x4497d ago

@ Deividas : My GPU is almost two years old. If we had to keep upgrading I would have needed to buy a GTX Titan or GTX780TI but I dont need to upgrade.

Dude4204497d ago (Edited 4497d ago )

Why not use BF4? It's a graphically demanding game like any other. I just used it as an example because it's a well known game. Fine want other games? My brother also plays COH2, Rome total war 2, played Witcher 2 etc...

It can even run Crysis 3 just fine on med-high settings. So can you give me a game that's out now that the card is absolutely incapable of running? Don't underestimate the 5770 1GB, it's still a pretty good card especially since it was considered the lowest mid-range card in the series.

That's YOUR opinion and YOUR preference on PC gaming. My views on owning a PC? Free online, lots of mods, cheap games and can also be used for other tasks such as office use. I don't have to play Ultra to see the point in owning a gaming PC. You're an enthusiast, I'm not, but we still have gaming PC's

Deividas4497d ago (Edited 4497d ago )

@ Steve

Yea when I say upgrade im not saying upgrade every year or two cause thats rediculous. every 3-4 years is a reasonable amount of time to upgrade. No one ever said upgrade every year.

@dude
Your telling me that a 5770 1GB can run Crysis 3 on med/high settings on 1920x1080 with more that 15fps......what.... \Prove it.

I have a backup PC that has a GTX 660 3GB that plays Crysis 3 on medium/high with okay fps. I call bullshit on that.

steve30x4497d ago (Edited 4497d ago )

@ Deividas : Make up your mind. Either you are saying you do need to keep upgrading or you only need to upgrade every 3 - 4 years.

"No one ever said upgrade every year."

I said you dont have to keep upgrading and yet you disagreed with me making out that you have to keep upgrading. Also I spent a lot on my GPU so that I can get a few years out of it. In the long run PC gaming is not as expensive as some people think it is.

I stand by what I said and you dont need to keep upgrading. Only every few years do you need to upgrade. Most Console gamers think that you need to upgrade every time new hardware comes out when its it very untrue.

[EDIT] @ Deividas : I never said anything about my brothers computer. Also when somebody says they need to keep upgrading I see it as them saying they need to keep buying the latest hardware.

Deividas4497d ago (Edited 4497d ago )

Upgrading every 3-4 years is having to keep upgrading because its "every" 3-4 years. Still considered upgrading. Most people that dont know about pcs think you need to every year and no your dont. But unless you get the high mid range cards, you will have to upgrade. And you can stand by what you said, I call 100% bullshsit that your "brothers" card can play those games on med/high settings on 1920x1080 with above 30fps. Those are some of the most demanding games and playing at 1080p eats up your fps like no tomorrow.

And im not disagreeing with you that you HAVE to upgrade because no one HAS to do anything. But in order to play games on high settings that take advantage of the PC power, you will have to upgrade sooner than most unless you buy expensive parts. Thats what I was trying to say since the first post. If you want to keep playing on med/low settings, go for it and will be able to for a long time. If you want a good PC experience I would suggest otherwise.

@dude
you did say brother "A brother of mine is rocking HD 5770"

And yea I dont mean buying the latest hardware cause thats just crazy talk.

Dude4204497d ago (Edited 4497d ago )

So are you going to call BS on these results?

http://www.tomshardware.com...

http://www.tomshardware.com...

The HD 7770 isn't even that much better than the 5770. The HD 5770 1GB has GDDR5 which enables it to play 1080p just fine. I only mentioned Crysis 3 in med-high settings. He plays all those other games in 1080p but low-med. My brother puts resolution first before graphical enhancements and those games play just fine. I've seen it, I know.

Yeah, he's still rocking it because that card is 4 years and 4 months old and can still play the latest games, it's not junk. Now you're just starting to sound like an elitist.

@ steve30x

It was me who mentioned my brother, so he's replying to me. He can't believe that an old card is still capable of running games, it's just impossible. :/

webeblazing4497d ago

Dude420 Dont bother her one of those people that spread BS. If steam launches this year and the card lasts over 5yrs that's basically the console gen. So like dude420 state we Dont see the logic in what you are saying in having to upgrade . People on this site is trying so hard to downplay every PC new that's coming out of ces .

First, for those people that already have a custom PC equivalent to 1 of the 13 versions of the Steam Machine being released you will be able to download the SteamOS software for free so you don't have to actually buy one if you want to run the SteamOS. Second, I suspect games that run on the SteamOS will scale to whatever version of Steam Machine you have purchased. This means Steam Machine #1 will have slightly better graphics whereas Steam Machine #13 will totally blow everyone away with its gaming goodness. Third, the price points that have been announced for the actual hardware is $500 for the least expensive and $6000 for the most expensive. Fourth, Gabe made comments about comparing X-Box users to Steam and it fell flat as far as I'm concerned. I understand why he did it, but to me he sounded stupid. Your comparing something that is free and been working for over 10 years compared to something you pay for that has been around less time than Steam. In addition to that you can't just compare the X-Box because that is 1 of 3 main competitors. You also have to take into account Sony PS3/4, Microsoft 360/XB1, and Wii-U sales.

Exclusive: Alienware Concept UFO is a Switch killer that plays PC games

The Alienware Concept UFO stuffs a Windows 10 PC into an amazingly portable package

It’s far from a Switch killer. People will always buy Nintendo based on brand loyalty and for their amazing exclusives.

indysurfn2307d ago

I agree!
"super premium" is not tech specs. They have no exclusive games they are going to have to at least have SUPER TECH! And they will still not touch SWITCH.

2307d ago
CaptainHenry9162307d ago

I feel that way with Nintendo and Sony

Kribwalker2307d ago

except when they get that switch emulator running on it. Then that thing could be wicked

spicelicka2306d ago

It would make it better than the Switch, but people still wouldn't buy it as much as the switch simply because of brand power and convenience.

2pacalypsenow2307d ago (Edited 2307d ago )

Exclusives which you can play on PC with an emulator. Js

Shiken2307d ago

One, you still have to buy the game to play it legally on an emulator...and you have to rip the game yourself.

Two, there is no Switch emulator at this point in time...JS

King_Noctis2307d ago

And you think this little thing have enough juice to fully emulate a Switch game?

Maybe you should wake up.

2pacalypsenow2306d ago

I don’t know it’s not out yet.

King_Noctis2306d ago (Edited 2306d ago )

“ I don’t know it’s not out yet.”

Why do you need to wait until it is out in order to realize that if a big desktop-sized PC struggle to emulate the Switch, then how can a tablet-sized PC like this one able to achieve that?

CosmicTurtle2306d ago

There is a Switch emulator called Yuzu.

Shiken2306d ago

@comic

Yuzu is experimental and most games either will not boot, or they run like garbage. Why even bother naming it when it runs would run worse than supporting the devs for their hard work?

Sounds like you are just looking for ways to claim you do not need a Switch to play major Switch games...but a quick google search will just out you quicker than you can type a response.

2pacalypsenow2306d ago

@Shiken

Actually majority of the switch’s mayor games are playable on the Wii U.

Shiken2303d ago (Edited 2303d ago )

@2pacalypsenow

That is false. I assure you that games like Mario Odyssey, Link's Awakening remake, Luigi's Mansion 3, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Astral Chain, Pokemon Sw/Sh, Smash Ultimate, BotW2 (coming soon), Splatoon 2, Xenonlade 2, Xenoblade Torna, etc etc etc are not playable on WiiU.

Just because the WiiU has lost its value to most of their under appreciated games getting a second chance on Switch, that does not mean that Switch is not still pumping out its own exclusives at an even greater number as well.

But like I said...downplay...and we all know you do a lot of it lol.

Dare I say... Emulation? If I own it, why can't I play it in any form I like?

Shiken2303d ago

Because there is no reliable Switch emulator at this time.

m2stech2306d ago

How about Yuzu switch emulator installed on it?

Calling it a Switch rival would be more accurate.

2306d ago
isarai2307d ago

"Switch Killer" lol

People buy the switch for Nintendo's exclusives, so unless they can suddenly hault Nintendo from making games it's really not even gonna affect the Switch in the least. That said the product does look dope an i'd love to get one for emulation aswell as PC games.

Bhuahahaha2307d ago

lol when someone says its a "(insert game/device) killer" it will always end in failure

Vits2307d ago

That is what I call a sensationalist title.

The UFO is not even a real product, let alone a Switch killer.... It's just a concept, one of many that Dell has brought to the CES 2020. It might eventually go into production if they find a market for it. But as many other concepts it might as well just stay a concept.
