How Microtransactions are No Longer "Optional"

Hardcore Gamer: “Microtransactions” has become one of the most hated terms in today’s gaming ecosystem, even trumping that buzz term “Day 1 DLC” that was running riot in 2012. The idea of being able to spend extra real-world money to earn a special item or skill has earned its share of detractors, yet it’s still a hugely popular concept for developers. Companies like EA, Activision and even PC juggernauts Valve have made microtransactions a big part of their games. You can buy new weapons, skills and enhancements instead of spending countless hours playing the game to unlock them. It may sound like sheer convenience at first glance, but the way this idea is entering the mainstream gaming market is anything but subtle. The developers are saying that you aren’t required to use them, but unless you’ve played the game in the ecosystem we live in today, that claim is all the more unsubstantiated. The point is this: developers are slowly making microtransactions mandatory for gamers.

Microtransactions need to go

Yi-Long4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

I vote with my wallet. If it has excessive DLC-milking announced before it's even released, or micro-transactions, or anything else I don't care about (online pass, DRM, whatever), I just refuse to buy it. Simple.

Often, I'll wait for a complete release to hit the bargain bin, before I start to reconsider. IF I'm still interested by then.

JasonKCK4510d ago

We just need to convince the other gamers not to buy. Sad thing is there are so many gamers out there with more money than sense.

Yi-Long4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

Well, many friends I know are just casual gamers, so they hardly even know (or care) about DLC and such. They see a GT6 or a new Call of Duty coming out, and they and their friends buy it, and a year later, they buy the newer versions.

They only know about the 'big name' releases, and don't have a clue what a 'Bioshock' is, or a 'Mark of the Ninja', or 'Journey' or whatever. They don't follow the gaming news, they're not on gaming fora.

They don't care. If their mates are playing Call of Duty every night, they'll buy it as well. If those mates buy the DLC, they will too.

Sadly.

Like I said, PERSONALLY I'll vote with my wallet (I'm still playing Forza 3 cause I haven't picked up ANY of the newer Forza games, due to the DLC-milking and the lack of 'complete' releases), and I'm sure many others do as well. But there's also a big group of gamers who really don't care. And I guess that's their free choice, of course.

It's funny, but the more money these developers/publishers try to pull from my pocket, with these kinds of greedy schemes, the less they usually end up getting, if any at all.

I'm more than willing to pay 50-60 bucks for a new games on day one, but I won't when I know they'll be releasing DLC and such. In the end, I often end up paying 20-30 bucks (or less) a year later, for a version that has all the DLC included. And I won't buy any incomplete games.

Volkama4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

Voting with your wallet doesn't work, the message gets lost.

Publishers look at their sales and go "oh x game didn't go well, let's make sure our next game is more like COD or GTA". And then they put more MTs in their COD clone.

Take Crimson Dragon as an example. It's a micro-transaction riddles mess. You visit your base between every mission, which is essentially a shop window. If I just 'vote with my wallet' and don't buy it the message will be "Taking risks on once great Japanese developers is a bad idea".

By all means vote with your wallet, but wherever you can you should vote with your vote as well. I suggest viewing the microtransactions on the XBox Live store, where you can rate them accordingly. Browse the game, the MT item is listed as an add-on and you can give that add-on a rating. No purchase necessary.

An over-whelming number of 1 star ratings on MT content may send a more specific message.

Prime1574510d ago

My two years of working at gamestop shows me that the majority of people buying these don't think like you (and me) do.

"No, I only buy cod and Madden." Is a very common example, two yearly iterations of a game title that hardly changes that has mts.

ShinMaster4510d ago

About Gran Turismo 6...

You can do some Seasonal Events and make a lot of money fast. No need for micro-transactions.

Some events reward you with over 100,000 credits for Bronze and over 500,000 for a Gold. PLUS with consecutive logins you can rack up to 200% the rewards. That means 1,000,000+ for one race/event.

Sly-Lupin4510d ago

I disagree.

Well, kind of.

Microtransactions are not an inherently negative thing. They're just usually implemented -TERRIBLY.- The only games I can think of that actually does microtransactions well is probably Tales Of, as they don't bother with any in-game advertisements and they don't sell anything that cannot be earned in-game.

H0RSE4510d ago

Exactly. It's how it's implemented, not the concept itself that is bad. The same thing goes for DRM.

HammadTheBeast4510d ago

League of Legends microtransactions are some of the best in the business. People actually buy stuff because its usually fair ($30 skins aside).

Prime1574510d ago

It's just the idea of "pay to win." Pay to win sucks, period, and helps cruddy developers to make more money than they should.

dsswoosh4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

NBA2k14 is a great example of pay to win.

Yes you can level your mycareer player up over weeks and weeks of playing, but....

You get two new players on line in park mode and the one who has bought most VC will win, every, single, time.

I refuse to pay to win.

If i dont get a fair chance of competing from day one, i will gracefully bow out and boycott the gaming scene and get another hobby.

assdan4510d ago

I'm fine with microtransactions as long as it doesn't give them an inherent advantage. So new skins, I'm fine with. I'm even fine with buying an unlock tree. If someoene doesn't have time to unlock all the guns in battlefield, I think it's fine that they pay 5 bucks to unlock all the guns in a class. Part of the fun is unlocking stuff. It becomes a problem when it gives them an advantage, such as a weapon/vehicle/accessory that alters/augments your abilities. So a gun that no one else can unlock, or is practically impossible to get without paying for. IE, you need to get a crap ton more points to unlock something.

webeblazing4510d ago (Edited 4510d ago )

wait i thought people love paying for things thats not needed. said thing microtranactions in f2p games are not bad if the dont make the game p2w. but the funny thing is people supported dlc and now complaining about it. instead of fighting each other gamers should stick together to stop it when it happen first. now gamers are paying for dlc that devs use to be free or use to be a expansion pack, and now paying for online. thanks for supporting on what makes companies more money instead of increasing your game experience.

Volkama4510d ago

Uh oh another thread where the 2 old enemies go at each other

-The people that hate micro-transactions
vs
-The people that never use micro-transactions, but don't mind if other people do.

One day the people that actually like Micro-transactions will show up, but until that day the neutrals will take up their fight (for some reason?).

Ps4Console4510d ago

I agree we pay enough to play online plus we spend our hard earned cash on in store indie games then they rip us off with microtransactions it is wrong . I need every penny we got nowadays to tell you the truth .

Blachek4510d ago

I have seen some games where the format fits perfectly, giving me the opportunity to try something and pay if I like it... and only pay what I want to in order to keep it relevant and exciting.

Subscriptions, micro-transactions and excessive DLC at the expense of releasing a full featured game right out of the box are going to collapse the industry. I don't know anyone who likes any of these things, and it's only a matter of time before people get tired of it.

Personally, I've already decided that I won't purchase many new games unless they really catch my eye, otherwise I'll wait for a really good sale before making a purchase. If I buy an old game on sale, I also expect most of the DLC to be included in with the game as a Game of the Year Edition or something similar.

I personally decided that the PS3 would be my last console because of the fact that you need to buy a subscription, and since backwards compatibility hasn't really carried over from each generation with the exception of PS One games being fully compatible with PS2 and PS3(all models), I don't have any faith that any investment I make in the PS4 will carry over to the PS5.

Moving to the PC fixes all of these problems with the only penalty being that I won't be playing Sony exclusive games, but really, there are so many multi-platform games that get released each year, that I barely have enough time for most multi-platform games anyways. I realize that the PC isn't for everyone, and some people just prefer consoles, but this was the route that I decided to take for myself.

Ashby_JC4511d ago

The one game that stands out for me that I own is Forza 5.

I already knew it had limited cars and tracks.

What pissed me off was the day one 10 car pack that they were selling for $10!!!!

I just paid $60 for a game that's limited compared to previous versions. But you want another $10 out my pocket for cars that should be in the game.

That is a slap in my and many other faces.

The micro transactions in Forza don't effect me.

Day one dlc is what we should be more outraged about!!

JasonKCK4510d ago

Agree that was a bad move by MS.

DanielGearSolid4510d ago

How is it a slap in the face? You bought the game to play it right?

So do that, and the cars will ve unlocked

whybag4510d ago

It's a slap in the face because everybody complained about the limited selection when Forza 5 launched. Then, lo-and-behold, they have cars available on launch day. Those cars should have been added to the game as a patch, not a purchase.

Yi-Long4510d ago

It's one of the reasons why I dropped the Forza series, even though I love the games. The graphics and gameplay are terrific. The DLC-milking has just ruined it completely for me, and I won't support it.

It's also one of the reasons why I stopped being interested in whatever Microsoft is doing this new gen, cause more of their 'exclusive' series have this DLC-milking being shoved in our faces, and it just means I stop caring completely for those games. Gears of War springs to mind.

Their terrible greed has completely driven me away. Sadly. Cause like I said, the games themselves are pretty great.

If you want a console that doesn't use a subscription, has little to no micro transactions and is backwards compatible then I suggest a wii u.

BattleAxe4510d ago

The only problem is that any digital downloads that you purchase from the eShop are tied to that specific console, which is something that I would never go with. Otherwise I would agree with you.

DragonKnight4510d ago

If you want a console with games, then I suggest anything but a Wii U.

LeCreuset4510d ago

I enjoy my Wii U, but that's like saying, "If you want an aircraft that doesn't burn up upon reentry get a 747," in a conversation about space shuttles. I would love to be able to play New Super Mario Bros. U and Super Mario 3D World online with other people.

jcnba284510d ago

I agree with everything you just said. I want to buy a PS4 but the forced PS+ subscription is what's putting me off. I'm not saying PS+ is not a good service, it's just not something that appeals to me. I shouldn't have to pay to play a game online that I already paid full price for, which is why I have never bought an Xbox.

I have a Wii U for Nintendo's exclusives so right now I'm playing the waiting game to see how the new steam machines play out before I make my decision on what will be my go to platform for multiplats.

gamegenieny4510d ago

@BattleAxe

What you just said is exactly the change i've gone through. Tired of the dlc milking and overcharging. Near the end of summer i got my Rig, and i'll get the PS4 and XBO when they drop in price, but for now steam sales keep me plenty busy.

Microtransactions are fine for free to play games. But when I pay $60 I don't want to see any in-game shops or microtransactions, it just pisses me off and turns me off from playing the game.

Ashby_JC4511d ago

He gave no specific examples that mts are destroying competitive gaming?????

I myself don't care for mts and more then likely will never use them. But what game are people using them that's giving them an advantage??

Actually I just thought of one game..nba2k14..if you have the money you could buy some vc (virtual currency) and level up your my player.

In that regard it's bad. But if someone wants to spend money versus someone else spending there time. So be it. How would I know otherwise???

Say a game just comes out....and you start facing opponents that are leveled up etc....because they spent real money. It would give me great pleasure to still beat them with a lower level character etc

SpiralTear4510d ago

Creating such a large advantage gap between those who pay and those who don't is the big issue. The guys who made Forza 5 called this phenomenon "acceleration" and Forza has always been a pretty competitive series.

Bzone244511d ago

People that pay for content that is available to you within the game just by putting in a little time and unlocking it deserve to get charged for their laziness. I don't care what the article says, those type of charges are optional and lazy gamers are the reason they are there.

However, I think that dlc that isn't unlockable by playing the game needs to go. Really hate paying for the game twice just to get the full game and all the maps that should have been there to begin with or at least been free.

iistuii4510d ago

We'll said, totally agree...

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio13d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing13d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing13d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
