PS4: Hard Drive Full at 407GBs

IGN - How many games can you fit on your PS4? IGN fills up a PS4 hard drive to see how much space we actually get on the system.

SynGamer4530d ago

407GB seems fair considering how much we lose instantly because of hardrives themselves, and then the space the system/OS takes up.

Kingthrash3604530d ago (Edited 4530d ago )

i had the same thought...
glad they let us swap out hdd's if needed. this gen games are huge and like last gen we will have to balance out our digital games library or upgrade to a larger hdd.
will just save money by skipping a upgrade, balance my digital content and buy more physical games like last gen...no biggie. no need for me to have 27 games saved on my hdd, ill only be playin five or six at a time anyway.

ArmGunar4530d ago

We know for 407 Go for PS4 ...

And for 362 Go for One :)

minimur124530d ago

So glad I got my 1tb HDD for my ps4, I've still got 800gb to fill up :D

qu1ckset4530d ago

I upgraded my PS4 HDD to 1.5TB day one , no problems here anytime soon with storage!

Eonjay4530d ago

You dont need to upgrade. Being able to install 27 games at once is far beyond what any person can enjoy at once.

Remember as long as you have the disk or a connection you can load/remove content at will.

If you want to turn your PS4 into a digital fortress, you can upgrade the HDD. The process of upgrading the PS4 drive couldn't be easier.

Listen to how sad these gentlemen in this sound taking up a problem that has never been encountered on a PS4 in the wild and is streamlined. You do realuze that even large disk based games are ready to play within 60 seconds with no prior data installed.

IGN even has a video showing how easy they are to upgrsde. Even the Xbox at 362 GB is easy enough for anyone to mage while waiting for external support.

guitarded774530d ago

I have a 1TB PS3, but I'm waiting to upgrade my PS4. Hoping if I can hold out a while there will be some higher capacity HD's on the market.

gaffyh4530d ago

I think it's because there is 10% reserved for OS.

How is loosing 93gb of storage to unspecified features "fair"? Not even a top pc with a pro OS takes as much on the system.

You guys really do rally for anything Sony does, wven while being abused.

come_bom4530d ago (Edited 4530d ago )

Have to agree.

Even if Sony used 450gb of hard drive for unspecified features and left 50gb free, fanboys would still think it's fair... and this goes for Xbox fanboys too.

Fanboys are quite du** ...

lemondish4530d ago

Disk manufacturers naturally exaggerate their sizes. A drive listed at 500GB really only has 465 to begin with.

That leaves 58GB left, but only part of that is likely to be the operating system. There are several pre-installed apps (or features that run like apps) on a fresh PS4. Things like the PS Store and Playroom. It's also unknown how much space is reserved for video caching or as a page file of sorts. I imagine consoles cannot be as flexible with virtual memory.

KratosSaveUs4530d ago

Why is it every time someone has an opinion regarding PS4 in a good way they are considered a "Sony fanboy" ? But Xbox fanboys defend their underpowered and overpriced console to the grave.

Bathyj4530d ago

Well it's still better than Xbone, plus we have the option to go larger which I've done, so yes, I rally behind that.

dantesparda4530d ago

Agree with ashe, come bon and lemon

DanielGearSolid4530d ago

93gbs arent all used by Sony...

Explain how the customer is being "abused"...

Every single electronic device in the world uses a portion of the hdd for it's OS not just Sony

Calling somebody a Sony Fanboy is just a quick out for other fanboys these days...

How about you make a valid point first

Testo4530d ago

I always assumed people who play video games knew a little about the tech they use.

Look at any HDD and you will notice they advertise more on the drive then what you actually get.

My 12 gig S3 has a 4gig MSD card, guess how much space it actually has? 3.78GB

The PC I'm using now has an old 250GB HDD, it really only has 232GB.

My Win 8 OS uses 20GB on this POS 250GB work computer.

Stop bashing when you have no clue what you are talking about.

nirwanda4530d ago

@kratos which part of advertising that it comes with 500gb of storage and only having access to around 400gb a positive thing, same goes for MS its just false advertising no matter how you spin it.

badz1494530d ago

@AsheXll @come_bom

what are you guys getting so worked out about? 500GB is actually only 465GB (thanks lemondish) and actually having 407GB for use is plenty. I use Win7 Home Premium 64bit and the WINDOWS folder alone is already taking 22.6GB not counting the Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders yet which will easily take 5GB+ if you install software for gaming along with the drivers and stuff. I think Pro version takes more than that.

so, for a full-fledged system like the PS4 with everything pre-installed to allow you to game and do other stuff on it, 58GB is actually kinda make sense! nothing to do with being a fanboy or anything, just being reasonable! the 103GB acquired by the Xbonbe's OS though....that's something else!

nirwanda4530d ago

@testo so you think its fair all the storage devices that you have purchased advertise falsely, if I bought 500 gold bars and what you actually got was 407 would you accept that as an expected tolerance.

imt5584530d ago

500 GB = 465 GB

http://answers.yahoo.com/qu...

PS4 OS takes about 60GB

Yes IGN, we know that free space is 407GB! We are not stupid.

bradleejones4530d ago

You know, it would be different but it is industry standard. First they (hdd manufacturers) round up which is allowed (apparently). Then there is the fact they base it on 1000 MB when 1GB is actually 1024... Then you have the pre installed os and apps. Its really not quite right but every electronics company does it the same way. They base specs on manufacturers advertised hdd size, not accounting the other mentioned variables.

dantesparda4530d ago (Edited 4530d ago )

Why am i getting disagrees for? I think Ashe is right went he says that fanboys rally for anything their beloved companies do, but know he's wrong on his numbers.

Agree with come_bon that fanboys are dumb and lemon that 500GB is really 465. So whats the problem?

And p.s. i also agree with what nirwanda is saying, so "ha!", suckers :-p and bradleejones is right about a gig really being 1024MBs not 1000MBs like the HDD companies like to get away with

Silly gameAr4530d ago

I don't think losing 93 gigs out of 500 is bad. Oh lord, I must be a Sony fanboy. You guys let your butt hurt show constantly over NOTHING.

cell9894530d ago

it could also be that in order to install a full game the PS4 needs twice the space required for installation thus always leaving 40+ GB locked for installation at all times

kayoss4530d ago

People who have trouble with the hard drive not as advertised need to take it up with those manufactureres. Regardless of what platform you buy the hard drive for the drive will come with less then advertised preinstalled. Sony buys the hard drive from the manufacturer and they say its a 500gb, Sony will then advertised it as 500gb. Same with Microsoft.
Don't believe? Take any memory stick and format it, you will never get the number that was advertised. This works the same for hard drive.

ShinMaster4530d ago

I have over 900+ GBS free.

It's cheap to upgrade the PS4's HDD. As cheap as it is on any PC.

Can't say the same about the Xbox One though...

Testo4530d ago

@ Nirwands

I'll quote another comment here.

"You know, it would be different but it is industry standard."

Another quote-
"hard drive manufacturers say a gigabyte is 1000 megabytes, and 1 megabyte is 1000 kilobytes, rather than 1024 like windows reads it. "

ratchet4264530d ago

Most of you folks complaining about having less than 500Gb of available free space on drive advertised as 500Gb have absolutely no clue how hard drives (or even flash memory) work, do you?

The formatting process writes block/sector maps on the media, marks bad sectors as not usable, and reserves some free blocks to use for things like de-fragmenting, spares for a bad block that might occur during use, etc. etc. And that's all before an OS gets laid on top of it. So "losing" 97Gb to the formatting/OS is not really all that shocking.

Also, go measure the picture on your "55-inch class" LED television. Is it exactly 55 inches diagonal? I didn't think so.

Now go whip out your brand-new, never used 32Gb iPhone or iPad and look at the "available space" number in system preferences. Is it exactly 32Gb, or significantly less?

Also (also) as someone else point out, the PS4 makes about 40Gb -more- space available for games and DLC than the Xbox One. That's not being a fanboy, that's just acknowledging basic math.

ajax174529d ago

How is 362 for the X1 fair?

nirwanda4529d ago (Edited 4529d ago )

@ratchet OK i will we switch to the Xbox one which is a worse case scenario for advertised storage space and use your TV analogy.
If you bought a TV advertised at being 50inch and you got home and found out it was actually 36.2 inch would you be agreved.

@testo so you think the industry is doing things correctly by rounding up the figure to suit them to make it look like a better product than it is?

liquidhalos4529d ago

Excuse me, but how the hell am I being abused by Sony? What the heck do you stand to gain from spewing such volatile rubbish? What absolute kak. People come here for game news and discussion, not to listen to juvenile fangirl nonsense. Oh and in case you didn't notice, there's tabs at the top of the page, one says pc, I suggest you click it and stay away from console posts if you hate them so much, leave the console section to people who support games consoles.

Testo4529d ago

@ Nirwanda-

I give up. I'll let a website explain how much data is actually on a drive.

For the time being, I might not fully load my HDD, but its nice to know I can switch it at any time with a 2TB one. for now I've only used 100GB thats just 7 games and recordings.

fullmetal2974530d ago (Edited 4530d ago )

The operating system takes up space in the NAND flash memory, not the hard drive itself. How do you think the PS4 can still boot with a clean hard drive?

johndoe112114529d ago

The ps4 cannot boot to os with a clean harddrive. It will tell you you need to install the operating system. Where did you get that from?

ramiuk14530d ago

im happy with that too,
but its a non issue anyway imo as u can swap out the HD anyway.

also you can manage your own games.

i have finished killzone and saved my save to cloud and delete all rest of data.
i will do the same with all games

Beastforlifenoob4529d ago

well you can always replace the HDD ;P

XiSasukeUchiha4530d ago

That really more space though i'm surprised

GentlemenRUs4530d ago (Edited 4530d ago )

Remember! A bit is not the same as a byte!

1MB is 1024kbs and the harddrive is being read at a lower capability so it's lower then stated.

Just read this :P - http://petapixel.com/2012/1...

hollabox4530d ago

Thank you! I was about to mention the same thing until I saw your post.

KratosSaveUs4530d ago

Well at least Sony was smart enough to let us upgrade our HDD's just like last gen. And don't use some stupid proprietary crap to get extra money like someone else. I won't have this problem because once I'm done playing a game it gets deleted of my HDD like BF4.

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose32d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE32d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername31d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy32d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde32d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8632d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8632d ago (Edited 32d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

pwnmaster300032d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
