GameSpot: Sony reports 238K PS3 install base down under

Sony's PlayStation 3 was late to the next-gen console party in Australia, arriving three months after the Wii's local release and a full year after the Xbox 360's launch. Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) seem to be more than happy with its performance so far, however, saying that the PS3 has sold 238,000 units down under since its debut in March 2007.

The 238,000 figure comes from SCEA directly and not from official industry trackers GfK Australia (who do not include bundle deals such as Sony's PS3 giveaway with Bravia televisions in late 2007/early 2008 in their figures). The last official count from GfK featured figures for the end of 2007, which had the PS3 at 155,000 units sold, compared to more than 300,000 for the Wii and 306,000 for the Xbox 360. In February this year, SCEA head Michael Ephraim told GameSpot AU that more than 28,000 PS3s had been given away as part of a holiday promotion which saw every purchaser of a new Sony Bravia LCD receive a free console. The 238,000 figure means the PS3 has easily eclipsed the first-year sales total for the PlayStation 2, which clocked in 146,000 in sales for in its first 12 months. GfK has yet to release figures for Q1 2008 hardware sales in Australia.

Happy My man, It's not VGchartz! ;)

Fox Jeffworthy6595d ago

We'll find out after the break.

Asurastrike6595d ago

Wow, all three platforms are selling rather poorly in Australia. Only 300k Wii's in a year?

Cyrus3656595d ago

That's good for Aust. plus PS3 are like 1 G down there.

specialguest6595d ago

What is up with the crazy Aussie price tags?!? Makes no sense. Someone please educate or enlighted me.

Bloodwar6595d ago (Edited 6595d ago )

I agree with Cyrus. Lets put this into perspective. According to the CIA world fact book, there are just under 21 million people living in Australia. We will go with 20 million. Divide that by the number of Wiis sold--300,000 which comes out to 1 console sold for every 66 persons in the country.

The United States has just under 304 million (65 percent of whom are Hispanic) j/k =). We'll go with 303 million and we come out with 1 console for every 28 persons considering the 10.73 million consoles sold. Okay, so I was going to try and show that its relative. I was hoping to find that they would have had the same ratio of gamers playing the Wii, but apparently I was wrong. =) Australians have social lives and do things other than game and we Americans apparently just game. lol

I used VG-charts to get the American figures.

LastDance6595d ago (Edited 6595d ago )

the aussie minimum wage is more then the american minimum wage(i think) so its not as bad as it seems. Alcahol here is very very expensive compared to america aswell...I remeber seeing 1 ltre vodkas in the states for 15 bucks here its something like $50(im not really a drinker so the prices arent exact)

Im still waiting for my free ps3.....I cant believe 28 000 bravia tvs sold in sucha short amount of time... insane!

mbmonk6595d ago

With an install base that size no wonder games are more expensive in Au. The US market sold that in a month.

PS3 retails for $700AUD, PS2 is like $150AUD, Wii is $400AUD. So assuming the PS3 is at the price the PS2 was released for and has basically doubled the PS2 sold figure in it's first year sales, The PS3 is doing very well in Australia.

LastDance6595d ago

nah the ps2 was like 400 i think:S....god i cant remeber...lol...ive riddle this page with (most likely) wrong statements.

yanikins1116595d ago

If i ever find your retarded, obsessive compulsive ar$e im gonna beat you into a mangled f***ing pulp you god damn b****.

He is actually pretty spot on....

Bathyj6595d ago

Its alright Dude. I saw it too, but who cares. The only pleasure some people get is by being arses. You can disagree all you want arse, just dont tell me I'm wrong, I was there, you obviously wasn't.

For the record at launch
PSOne RRP $699.95
PS2 RRP $749.95, currently $189 or so
PS3 RRP $999.95, currently $699 but can be found for $650 in most stores, which we call shops. ;)

LastDance6595d ago

i must have gotten my ps2 a while after it was out..haha.sheesh.

the xbox 360 is huge in oz
I had 25 friends playing gta yesterday,lol
need a bigger friends list 100 is not good enough
hate deleting friends

jessupj6595d ago (Edited 6595d ago )

well it's 300k 360s compared to 240k ps3s. It's winning but I wouldn't say it's "kicking butt".

I am quite appalled at the low number of sales. I expect a lot better from my fellow Australians. But I do know why consoles have been selling so poor. We get very poor advertising down here. I honestly have not seen a single comercial for any game, not even halo 3 or gta4. Apparently the producers here still think games are for kids and really have no idea how important games really are.

Also the high price tag is ridiculas. If you bought a 40gb ps3 in the US and were paying the same price we pay here in Australia, you would be paying $651.351 USD. $651.351!!!!!!! and for the 80gb, $930.420 USD. So yes, we have it very bad here and there is absolutely no reason why it should be that much. I mean we're closer to japan then the US so what's the fking problem!?

Maybe when I buy mine I should import from Europe :P

And also just for your benifit we have to pay $111.737 USD for gta IV. What a bloody rip off. (and we also get a censored version because our politians have their heads so far up their a$$ that they arn't open minded enough to see that it is just stupid doing that. I should import from the US.

Ace-Jury6595d ago (Edited 6595d ago )

i dont know for sure but australia is rated as having a fairly high standard of living with high disposable income compared to the rest of the world.
perhaps prices are relative to this.....just a theory

@dukegodtezza - dont talk rubbish, ps3 has picked up alot of steam, xbox360 isles are deserted. i saw a tumbleweed blowing through the Kmart xbox section.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle24d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7732d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga32d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199232d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga32d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman31d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box32d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion31d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7232d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7532d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit32d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14932d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7732d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
