Blu-ray: The Future Has Been Delayed

Hot on the heels of last week's report from ABI Research noting that many consumers may not see the picture quality difference between Blu-ray and standard DVDs comes the latest Blu-ray sales figures from NPD Group. And they're not pretty.

According to NPD, sales of Blu-ray standalone players plummeted 40 percent from January to February, then rose a scant 2 percent from February to March. The general consensus was that once Toshiba dropped its support for the HD DVD format early this year, sales would increase

sure... because people are buying HD TVs just to play normal DVD's

*yawn*

zane_78496575d ago

These numbers seem fairly vague. Most of the HD-DVD demise news hit pretty early in January and could have inflated the January sales figures beyond the regular upward curve of sales for Blu-Ray standalone players. Besides these sales figures don't even consider the PS3 which has been selling much better this year.

TruthbeTold6575d ago

They're buying HD-TV's to watch tv on. There are alot of HD channels these days, and more pop up all the time. However, even the average Joe has a decent sized collection of DVD's. The vast majority is in absolutely no hurry to replace them. In the meantime though, HD Channels, pay per view and even gaming are plenty enough regarding the "HD experience" at this point. Not to mention that even though upscaled DVD players aren't the best, they do enhance DVD's, and you can buy one for 60 bucks. Sometimes even less. BluRay had better hope that this recession doesn't become worldwide, and that it doesn't last, or else its lifespan will be even shorter than some have predicted. The PS3 is literally keeping BluRay's head above water right now.

The Lazy One6575d ago

Movies still look fine on DVD format. It looks even better on an upscaling player. The biggest benefit from blu-ray is the extra space for added features and connectivity, and 7.1 audio. The picture won't be that great a benefit to most people. If I had the money to buy a 7.1 system, I might consider buying a blu-ray player.

TheExodus6575d ago (Edited 6575d ago )

I bought an HDTV because Apple TV requires component video or HDMI & my SDTV had neither. Given the disparity between HDTV & Blu-ray sales it's obvious that we are all buying HDTVs for different reasons. I bet there's someone browsing this thread right now who bought an HDTV because they wanted to watch SD DVDs on a big rectangle instead of a tiny letterboxed square.

We've heard about the prices being jacked up because of market confidence seeing that HDDVD was slaughtered, now we have to wait until prices drop again.

There's nothing new about such a trend.

ravinash6575d ago

Credit crunch may have something to do with it as well.

Porky Pig6575d ago

So maybe the author of the article isn't paying attention to the consumers #1 choice for a Blu-ray player?

And th-th-th-that's all folks!

Bladestar6575d ago

The sad truth is that what's keeping blu-ray alive is the PS3... remove the PS3 from the equation and blu-ray is dead... The PS3 being mixup with the format war created the illution that everyone was adopting blu-ray since Sony was giving movies left and right...
Also blu-ray and sony supporters were spending money on the format in order to help sony win the format war... well.. now that the format war is over.. there is no point... not to mention that without competition blu-ray prices are payful... which was the main benefit of HD DVD... price....

gambare6575d ago

then explain the failure of the HD DVD even with the M$ support

TheExodus6575d ago

HD DVD failed because Disney, Fox & Warner bet on the wrong horse. Consumers never chose Blu-ray over HD DVD & now that the plug has been pulled on HD DVD they're not even choosing HD over SD.

xboxme6575d ago

"remove the PS3 from the equation and blu-ray is dead... "

that is soooooo true. ps3 users instantly became bluray supporters once they purchased their system w/o actually evaluating which is better for the masses.

The Lazy One6575d ago

Because sony pumped MANY MANY MANY times more money into blu-ray than anybody spent on HD-DVD.

HD-DVD was better for the consumer, better for the manufacturers, and better for the industry. If sony didn't pay out of pocket to make up for manufacturers and the entertainment industry losses, it would have probably lost in the long term. It definately wouldn't have won by now, and that much is certain.

Dannagar6575d ago (Edited 6575d ago )

Because HD-DVD was in the market, there was fierce competition to capture the next generation format. I remember seeing "buy one get one free sales" often during 2007. Since HD-DVD has left the market, I see no activity in terms of gaining new ground in the Blu-ray market. I believe Sony is totally reliant on PS3 to maintain it.

JasonPC360PS3Wii6575d ago

Without the PS3 there is no Blu-Ray, and since most people seem to be buying a PS3 for Blu-Ray movies. Sony had better hope that Blu will succeed or both platforms will fail. This is a risky gamble for Sony, if the PS3 fails as a Blu-Ray player then the PS3 could die.

wtf...still? its not even up for debate anymore which is the superior format:

Blu-Ray
- more space
- better transfer rates
- scratch resistant
- long lasting

HD DVD
-cheap

hmmm let me think... I'm very happy the consumer won this time around. Lets face it, the reason for the decline is the US's idling economy and lack of new releases that demand high def(there hasn't been a pirates level movie in a while). Grow brains people, that's all I ask.

can you actually see that bluray movies look better that hd-dvd movies? you can list whatever you want as an advantage of bluray but at the end of the day, visually there's no difference. if the masses can't tell btw bluray and dvd, they won't:

1. care about the freakin specs. only a handful of select nerds will have a pissing contest about transfer rates.
2. won't be able to tell the difference visually btw hddvd and bluray.

ravinash6575d ago

I think I'm having flash backs.

The Lazy One6574d ago

"Blu-Ray

blu-ray has more space. The transfer rates aren't really better. Scratch resistance could have the same thing done to HD-DVD. Scratch resistance was originally a problem with Blu-Rays, and actually had to be put in because the original resistance was so poor. Long lasting has no grounds in anything other than scratch resistance, which I've covered.

How about this for HD-DVD, low cost to consumer and manufacturer in discs as well as drives, finished format (had all it's features capable in all players since launch), low cost to the consumer and manufacturer, interactive features, and, oh yea, lower cost to the consumer and manufacturer.

If all people paid for was quality, why isn't everyone driving BMWs and Lamborghini's?

GIJeff6574d ago

of course the same movie looks the same on blu-ray and hd dvd...but what if the movie studio wants great sound? uh oh, HDDVD doesn't have enough storage space for longer movies with the best sound. that means consumer loses because MS went for fast and cheap with toshiba(again). The thing is, if you want to store data, do you prefer 25 being stuck gb or 25, 50, and beyond? And as for long lasting, its been proven that blu-rays are far higher in quality, and wont deteriorate as quickly as dvd or hd dvd. I am not wrong, you are just mentally blind to the facts. I am happy as all $%^$ knowing the superior format actually won this time. I am just sorry for the people who got shafted into thinking HDDVD was viable.

What kind of retards can't see the mad increase in quality Blu-ray provides? Jesus...

Also, I agree with 1.1: prices must fall. And I'm talking the disk prices. I'm not paying upwards of $30 for a freaking movie. Give it up, guys. It's actually conceivable that people are claiming they can't tell Blu-ray apart from upconverted DVDs to make themselves feel better over not wanting to overpay for movies.

The Lazy One6575d ago

It's the difference being small enough to not warrant the extra money spent to upgrade.

The difference just isn't worth the high price tag right now.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle3d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.
