Don’t Attempt Fake Xbox One Backwards Compatibility “Trick” Microsoft Warns

Major Nelson says, "To be clear there is no way to make your Xbox One backwards compatible & performing steps to attempt this could make your console inoperable".

@MS

No worries, your plans to sell HD remakes remain unaffected.

Console gamers.. dont care about BC.

Why wouldn't we care about backwards compatibility. I think more people would be early adopters it it was.

joab7774557d ago

U think so? I'm not so sure. It would cost more to make it BC so the price would be higher...and I wonder how many who bought an xbone have sold their 360's. I bought a ps4 and havnt sold either. The ps3 plays blu rays and can stream content...and the 360 is a great enetrtainment hub too. Also...there r still games I want to play. But, if I had to pay $50-$100 more for backwards compatibility it wouldn't b worth it. Thers tons of content that I have downloaded and tbh...my nephew and neice love playing them. Now they don't bother me to play everytime I turn on my console.

Eonjay4557d ago

@joab... yes im sure. Sony is producing pseudo bc with streaming and people do care. This solution doest effect console price either. If people didn't care they wouldn't bother. Also it would be better if it were here now but its good to know its coming. I am holding on to my PS3 as well.

decrypt4557d ago (Edited 4557d ago )

@joab

Console gamer logic appears flawed :P

It seems unreasonable to pay 50-100usd more for BC compromising games that they must have paid thousands of usd for.

Yet they rejoice at the mere announcement of a HD remake and are willing to dump 60usd for it too or a service like gaikai which will be charging on a yearly basis (one has to ponder how could that be cheaper than a one time 50-100usd).

I guess this behavior is perfect for corporations and their profitability lol. Perfectly explains how MS and Sony have gotten away with charging to go online, not supporting mods etc.

Jdoki4557d ago

I would imagine both Sony and MS had a look at the market and decided BC was not something they needed to do.

- It adds costs to incorporate BC
- How many people trade in vs keep their old console. Anecdotally I think a lot of people keep their old one and if Sony /. MS have seen the same trend then that's a compelling reason to leave it out.
- They have seen that HD remakes sell well and don't cost a lot to produce
- They have other plans (such as Gakai)

A lot of people seem to get hot under the collar about BC - but I really don't see it as a useful function. I'll keep my old console until I've completed all the games I want, then trade it or put it in the cupboard for nostalgias sake. I much prefer HD remakes

rainslacker4556d ago

obviously some people do care. The original phat PS3 still command a premium price used on ebay and even GameStop. In some cases they cost more than a brand new slim model. All because they are 100% backward compatible.

The reason it was left out was cost. At least for PS3 BC. Still not sure why PS1/2 BC wasn't included through software. Those PS1 classics are good sellers on their store, seems they'd want to keep that going, and wouldn't take much to get a software emulator running.

Backwards compatibility is important to me. Unless you're a bruh that sits on a couch full of chips and jizz stains and plays CoD all the day long, backwards compatibility is an important feature.

Spinal4557d ago

Thats another reason why i aint picked up a PS4 yet. There's no games i want to play on it yet to warrant the cost.

I'm buying the new iPad air instead. This will be my first time owning a tablet. quite excited cause the software is great.

jakehammer4557d ago

Backwards compatibility isn't important to me because I Still have my X1, Ps4, 360, Ps2, Ps1 and NES in my room. Why have backwards compatibility if you still have the systems?

Lenns4557d ago

I think you got MS and Nintendo mixed up

tweet754557d ago (Edited 4557d ago )

i tried a trick hooked xbox, 360 and one up to one tv I can now play every xbox game ever made in my room.

BobBelcher4557d ago

How many xbox games were made in your room?

Adolph Fitler4557d ago

I just duck taped my XBone, 360 & XBOriginal to one another...there we go, wallaah, presto, f^cking magic, now I have a full b/c lump of consoles.

Yui_Suzumiya4557d ago

I bet that sucker gets hot if you run all three simultaneously to 3 TVS.. can you imagine?! Good way to easily stay warm in the winter!!

Lykon4557d ago

i like your name. mmmm fit

assdan4557d ago

This would never work. There is not a backward's compatibility button. It's just not that simple.

XiSasukeUchiha4557d ago

Hmmmm..... That backwards fail on xbone(forcibly laugh for stupidty of a company) Evil laugh time http://www.youtube.com/watc...

With Major Nelson, Xbox Had a Consistent, Likeable and Trustworthy Spokesperson

For far too long Xbox have created a serious messaging problem for themselves, in losing Larry Hyrb they discarded the solution.

No no they didn’t major nelson knows nothing about how to succeed in the console business and did nothing trustworthy.

fr0sty324d ago (Edited 324d ago )

Major Nelson was full of shit, for sure... I remember all the lies he was spewing during the 360 years, and on into the Xbox One years. He lied about Xbox DRM, for instance. Pretty much everything he said here turned out to be a lie. Also, let's call him who he is, not the cheesy "character" he tried to portray. Larry Hryb is his name. I guess the suits didn't think a middle aged guy named Larry would resonate "with the kids", so they had to spice it up with a "cool" nickname.

Cacabunga324d ago

MN was a clueless guy like Greenberg. Just two trolls full of lies

VenomUK324d ago

This is some major revisionism as ‘Major Nelson’ was a corporate face for a corporation who was regarded as soulless and insincere. He was part of Xbox’s image problem outside of the US. There were videos of him fake smiling for fans who wanted photos, then his expression turning into a scowl! I saw him at E3 2013 outside the expo centre with a team of young staff and he just looked so pissed off - but then he and Xbox were under a lot of pressure that year! I’m not saying he is a bad person, just that you shouldn’t hold him up as an example of great PR because he wasn’t.

@mandf: “ No no they didn’t major nelson knows nothing about how to succeed in the console business and did nothing trustworthy.”
I totally agree with you and when I read the headline I 🤣

Notellin324d ago

Everyone in gaming made fun of the guy. Nothing he said was ever taken seriously by the community. He was never a gamer and everyone knew it.

-Foxtrot326d ago

Are Microsoft in that bad of shape we're doing the "Perhaps I treated you too harshly" shtick on Major Nelson...

darthv72326d ago

...watch out now, they will try to sell the idea that Mattrick was actually the good guy all along.

wesnytsfs324d ago

No, its N4G its so heavily filled with PS fanboys. I usually ignore the comments or take them with a grain of salt.

slate91326d ago

We aint gonna sit here with rose tinted glasses and glaze the cornball major nelson

StarcrossedBits324d ago

Yeah the first thing I thought was 'Holy cow that is some serious rose-tinted glasses'. Maybe it was written by someone who was 5 when the 360 was around and doesn't actually have a real memory of Larry.

If I was Facebook I would drop the branding as it is now associated with a failed streaming service.

exputers2167d ago

What do you think, why would Facebook partner up? They must be failing badly too lol

Stanjara2167d ago

While Mixer failed and didn't see any growth (or better, their traffic was going down), Facebook's gaming division (or whatever) was going up due to Oculus or chat or mobile gaming. More traffic on service, more ad revenue.
Increasing traffic also means that you have to go where there is traffic or where people are.
Since Facebook has money, and Mixer has money they went together to see potential growth.
Facebook goes for gaming because they have billions of people, who some of them are gamers, but they game on other platforms.
At this stage what ever they do they will se growth, but not from hc gamers or gamers in general, but from every day Joes who heard that fifa, gta and cod exists.

In other words, who cares :p

SpaceRanger2167d ago

Two companies that have been scrutinized for data collection practices, Facebook being the worst of the two. This is a partnership MS should have stayed away from.

Ausbo2167d ago

That was really the only option. Couldn’t have gone to YouTube because stadia would conflict with xcloud plans. Couldn’t go with twitch because amazon will be releasing their own answer to the streaming Wars.

The only other option was to not partner with anyone. If they did that, they’d be leaving their streamers high and dry. At least with Facebook they are offering partner status to those who had it in mixer and sign on bonuses

SpaceRanger2167d ago

It would have been way cheaper to just buy out people with sign on bonuses. The partnership with Facebook was probably expensive and will further tarnish their branding in the streaming space. Especially with so many companies boycotting Facebook right now.

And the likelihood of Facebook being integrated into the XSX at some point is super high now. Not sure anyone would want that.

MS can’t catch a break this gen when it comes to partnerships.

Ausbo2166d ago

The partnership is more about a gateway to xcloud. They want to push that to as many people as possible. They wanted mixer to be that, but it failed to gain traction.

This was more about xcloud than anything

Sunny_D2167d ago

I don’t know. His wording was cleverly typed. It feels like he’s saying it won’t be integrated for now.... Or get built into the OS someway or another.

RazzerRedux2167d ago

Sounds like this was all just a way to kill off Mixer and endorse an alternative that isn't Twitch or Youtube.

ColdSin2167d ago (Edited 2167d ago )

I think you are right. Amazon seems to have a game streaming service up their sleave and want it to go along with Twitch (click-and-play stuff). The same is true for Google with their Stadia streaming service.
