Why GTA IV is 'Next-Gen'

You can't ignore the hype and don't pretend not to care. In a few days you'll find out if the most talked-up game of this generation really was worth all the attention it's been receiving since its 2006 unveiling.

CVG are playing through GTA IV right now, and they are convinced Rockstar's sequel is not only up to the incredible amount of hype (well, most of it), but it's going to be one of the greatest examples of what a so-called 'next-gen' game should be. For the nit-pickers out there, maybe the headline should have read 'Why GTA IV is current-gen'. But that doesn't sound right.

Anyway, it's taken a few years into this current generation to see it, but here's why CVG think the latest Grand Theft Auto ticks all the boxes of a triple-A game in 2008.

Its THIS-gen.

This-Gen started 2 1/2 years ago.

This-gen sounds better than current-gen

AllahAkbar6605d ago

who cares, same thing really. can't believe some people actually take the time to compare and worry about words being said differently.

Torch6605d ago

are the dynamics of the city and it's inhabitants.

I dare you to just goof around within the city and not be surprised by some random and ever-unique series of startling and often-amusing series of events you set off.

The most fun I've had accomplishing absolutely nothing, ever in my life!

Antan6605d ago

"it's off the scale in my books."

Books???

You mean you have more than one??

okcomputer6605d ago

Yea I noticed that too, I was just wandering around the city last night and came across this randomly occurring gunfight between a bunch of cops and about 4 crooks that I had nothing to do with. It just randomly broke up. Just thinking about the amount of things going on at once is the game is staggering.

Visually the game is amazing too. Growing up in queens, there are areas that look JUST LIKE their real life counterparts, even the smaller more suburban parts of queens like forrest hills and kew gardens are replicated perfectly. I can't wait to unlock manhattan and compare that. gta4 has more than lived up to the hype.

Torch6605d ago

"Books???...You mean you have more than one??"

Why yes...yes I do.

That's how much I'm enjoying the game; no less than an extensive, unabridged volume will suffice. ;)

Antan6605d ago

"That's how much I'm enjoying the game; no less than an extensive, unabridged volume will suffice. ;)"

Counldn`t agree more.

Wasn't expecting GTA IV to look like such crap. Decent physics engine but everything else is just lol. The total map area isn't even bigger than San Andreas.

Torch6605d ago (Edited 6605d ago )

It's ironic for me, because I had absolutely no care for the previous GTA titles. I tried them, and had no patience for all the running around that was required.

But this one...well, and sorry for the cliche, but this one IS different.

Bugs? Hell yeah. Not the absolutely most impressive or polished graphics I've seen either (albeit still great visuals).

But as far as the fun-factor is concerned, it's off the scale in my books. And the attention to detail of the city itself, just makes my jaw drop.

Torch6605d ago

"Did you play San Andreas?"

Admittedly, no. Is that supposed to be the best one?

My bro-in-law, a long-standing die-hard fan, has it. I would definitely give it a shot since the currently one has strongly perked my interest.

Britjadg6605d ago

San Andreas was not as good i'm sorry. some of the visuals in 4 are completely out of SA's league. its a great game. not 10/10 great granted, but theres enough there to warrant a lot of the hype.

bit disappointed with some of the bugs though, my copy seems to have issue with "floating car" over stuff like pop up. although there are times when you are on a street and nobodys about - then you head round the corner and its dead unmovable traffic! crazy sh1t.

I wasnt that amazed.. It still has the same GTA Clunky character models.. They have no emotion in their face at any time.. Their month moves up and down only.. Contact physics are horrible.. Stuff falling through floors and people walking through stuff.. The game is great dont get me wrong.. but truly next gen is a stretched.. NO offense to 360 owners but 360 held it back...

Could you imagine if naughty dog lent their game engine to rock star for this game.. you would get uncharted graphics with the space of a blu ray dics to make what ever game your heart desires come true..

Rockstar had to fit a game on a DVD9 dics and then put it on a Blu ray disc.. I think they realized the limits of those dics and thats why they said 360 wont have nough space for their next game

BluRay disc just make it possible to do whatever you want as a dev.. and with 200 gig blu ray dics possible.. Think of the freedom a dev can have with that rediculous amount of space

power of Green 6605d ago

How is that true? the PS3 version fell short visually runs sub HD and has to use the HDD to run it. MSFT's catering to the Arcade SKU has to do with not useing the HDD.

MSFT patches POP-ins on all their AAA's anyways.

Cynical-Gamerzus6605d ago

I Agree, the game felt like XBOX1 version Minus in game soundtracks= so last gen..
Nothing great, the Polygons were high but the sad low Resolution killed it.

Ive been playing GT5 Prologue and GTA4 is a huge step down,I am squinting repeatedly to adjust to the low quality of graphics. This is very lame.
I had the same effect when playing Halo3 my eyes couldn't adjust to Low resolutions.
I'm spoiled I must admit.I have 50 1080p LCD
Most of my Blurays are VC-1 encodes and I listen to PCM audio
and love Hi-def.
What would ya expect???

I can't wait for God of War 3 redeem us all .....

Varsarus6605d ago

"PS3 version fell short visually runs sub HD"

and Oblivion on 360 is sub HD

Oblivion on 360 = 1024x600
Oblivion on PS3 = 1280x720

Sorry, but the 360 does exactly the same :D

"has to use the HDD to run it"

That's dumb, HDD has absolutely nothing to do with running the game, explain COD4, NO install, resolutions and AA are the same, loading times the same, and are on par visually and performance (some cases better on PS3).

"Infinity Ward has admitted that the PlayStation 3 version of Call of Duty 4 is better than the Xbox 360 version, stating that they had their "best programmers" working on the PS3 version."

The Closing6605d ago (Edited 6605d ago )

I've been saying this from before launch. I don't understand why everyone is rating this as a perfect game when it's pretty much exactly like the last 3. What's sad is there are going to be much better games this year that will sell a fraction, and wont pull goty away from gta4. There's still the same shoty combat system, poor driving mechanics, heck all the game play mechanics are sub standard. The missions are basically repetitive, and the same as the last game. The AI is still scripted, and does the same thing every time in the missions. I'm sorry, but that's just not "next" gen." It seems like a whole lot of quantity of quality still. Sure you can do it all, but can you do anything up to standard of games that specialize at certain things? Do I really need all this?

your just angry because you got the non-HD version lol!

LevDog6605d ago (Edited 6605d ago )

Actually I dont own the game.. I played a few hours a buds house on both console.. The difference are soo minor its dumb.. Honestly Uncharted blows GTA4 outta the water in terms of graphics..

Even tho Im pro Ps3, Ive played both versions and My opinion is on the game not which console its on

power of Green 6605d ago

Uncharted is pretty good looking thats it. So many games beat uncharted man. GTA4 is a sandbox game that looks stellar for its genre, period!!!!.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies766d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken766d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing69767d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker767d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo767d ago (Edited 767d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing69767d ago (Edited 767d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos766d ago (Edited 766d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt766d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken766d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
