An Italian developer known to have worked on the development of a graphics engine during the Final Fantasy VIII era has made a rather interesting remark on the status of Square Enix’s Luminous graphics engine at the Indievault forums. He referred to Luminous as “R.I.P”, implying that the graphics engine has been abandoned, possibly in favor of a licensed engine such as Unreal Engine 4.

Square Enix announced its financial results for the first nine months of the fiscal year, related to the period between April and December 2025.

3D Investment Partners, a major shareholder of Square Enix, issued a 112-page presentation criticizing the company's 'sluggish' revenue and profit margins.
Waaah waaah our profits aren't big enough! I mean, they're still growing and all, but we want it faster and NOW! Waaaah!

MP1st managed to get our hands on Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined months before it releases, and here's our hands-on preview!
I know nothing
R&D must be bleeding them dry especially considering the financial hardships they've had this year! I hope their teams don't resort to licensing because in house becomes cheaper, over the long run. This was what caught them off guard last generation since most Japanese developers weren't ready for multi core coding and HD resolutions.
I suppose if true it's due to unreal 4 engine's versatility which would make it easier to go multiplatform. Also probably cheaper if they were having trouble with their luminous engine.
After all the time promotion and likely expense involved.
Wada really screwed them over.
