Did Square Enix kill its Luminous graphics engine?

An Italian developer known to have worked on the development of a graphics engine during the Final Fantasy VIII era has made a rather interesting remark on the status of Square Enix’s Luminous graphics engine at the Indievault forums. He referred to Luminous as “R.I.P”, implying that the graphics engine has been abandoned, possibly in favor of a licensed engine such as Unreal Engine 4.

Reading the full italian text of the thread it's obvious that the guy is simply guessing. He also says that Final Fantasy XV would pass to Luminous when the engine is ready, which is also false.

So no. This is false, even more so because they're using the engine to showcase their new cloud tech.

FF15 is passing into Luminous when the engine is ready isn't it? Nomura said so.

'Using the same technique that was utilized for Agni’s Philosophy, the team at Visual Works will create the base for those cutscenes and then drop them into Luminous Engine to run in real time. Everything seen in the E3 trailer was made using the current rendering engine and tools, but will eventually be moved entirely to Luminous as XV and that engine are being developed in tandem.'

The trailer at E3 was using the Crystal Tools because the engine isn't really finished (and or they haven't dropped the gameplay into it).

But yeah, this sounds pretty false to me. I doubt SE is stupid enough to kill off an engine they've been working on for years.

@EXVirtual: Missed that one, but doesn't really matter. The engine has been used today to showcase their cloud tech. So much for dead.

EXVirtual4492d ago (Edited 4492d ago )

@Abriael, yeah. That's what I mean. This is completely bogus.
Also, it takes loads of money to make an engine. To kill it off in the middle of development while SE is in their current state would be dumb. I was just adding to what you were saying :D

Reibooi4492d ago

I have no idea why anyone would think that SE has given up on Luminous. I mean what we have seen with the demos of it are flat out amazing and even if it costs them alot to get it done it still makes sense as it will last them a LONG time.

It can make their games look pretty much like the CGI cut scenes that Final Fantasy is known for which is a incredible thing. I get square want to use other engines for other games(I don't understand why they would ever want to work with Unreal after it ruined The Last Remnant) but it would make more sense to kinda have a look to all their games. I mean Tomb Raider used a heavily modified version of the Crystal Tools engine and that game looks awesome.

I mean the only reason they would even consider not finishing the engine is if they were gonna go bankrupt tomorrow or if it was hell to develop for and one of the problems with Crystal Tools was exactly that so I doubt they would make the same mistake twice.

Ohohoho4491d ago

Not that I'm saying that this is true, but SE are the company that completely re-tooled White Engine to Crystal Tools to be a multiplatform engine right in the middle of developing FFXIII. I wouldn't put abandoning and engine passed them at all.

http://kumquatwriter.files....

Well if they did killed it then they just wasted a lot of money just from trying to develop an graphics engine.

Developing engines isn't cheap.

SilentNegotiator4491d ago (Edited 4491d ago )

"...I was not here! I did not even get up zis morning!"

It would be really dumb to drop it now....hey, sounds like something Squeenix might do!

ATiElite4491d ago

No! FFXv is still running on the Luminous Engine Luminous Studios may have died.

R&D must be bleeding them dry especially considering the financial hardships they've had this year! I hope their teams don't resort to licensing because in house becomes cheaper, over the long run. This was what caught them off guard last generation since most Japanese developers weren't ready for multi core coding and HD resolutions.

curtis924492d ago

I suppose if true it's due to unreal 4 engine's versatility which would make it easier to go multiplatform. Also probably cheaper if they were having trouble with their luminous engine.

BABY-JEDI4492d ago (Edited 4492d ago )

The new consoles are relatively easy to develop for in comparison to last gen. The real question is, who has the best & most versatile engine for the required task @ hand? Hell,, I don't know.

After all the time promotion and likely expense involved.

Wada really screwed them over.

Basically, their presentation says: Go Woke, Go broke.
Sorry fellow N4gamers.

Alos88104d ago

Or, alternatively, don't cut Switch and Steam out of your biggest releases day one.

360ICE104d ago

If your response to a 112 page presentation from a profit-maximizing investment fund about the need for corporate restructuring (i.e. layoffs), integrating non-gaming (i.e. sell merch or build a theme park) and other corporate initiatives, is that it's about "go woke, go broke", then it's because you've lost the ability to think in any terms. Awful way to live your life. Private equity is destroying the games industry while you obsess that Square made a cringe game everyone thinks is cringe in 2023. Time to move on.

gold_drake105d ago

i mean .. we've been saying this for years.

franwex104d ago

Oh darn. Maybe games with NFTs can fixed that!

Soy104d ago

Waaah waaah our profits aren't big enough! I mean, they're still growing and all, but we want it faster and NOW! Waaaah!
