Is The Steam Machine Pointless?

Article by Metin Ismail of Die4Games.Com

The Steam Machine is on it’s way. Now that the PS4 and XBOX ONE have proven that machines dedicated to gaming are still sort after Valve have even more of a reason to get excited. The real here is “Do the gamers want it?” I have been thinking out this for a while now and I have come up with my own theory. The question I ask myself was “Do I need it?”. My answer is: No not really. Will I buy it? Sure, I’ll give it a try. There are some really controversial subjects within this topic. I have tried to list them in order to help you decide whether or not you’re going to buy one.

well it's technically better than Xbox one and Ps4 but i guess it won't find a market

dedicatedtogamers4545d ago

It probably won't find a market.

We all must remember that it is software that sells the hardware. It wasn't until breakout "exclusives" like Angry Birds that smartphone gaming exploded in popularity (yes, at first Angry Birds was exclusive to the App store and unavailable anywhere else).

What breakout exclusives are announced for SteamBox? What developer is making an only-for-SteamBox title that all of us just GOTTA have?

Okay, okay, the easy answer is to say "it'll have a billion PC games, duh!". But that's not the correct answer. Lumping a ton of games on a platform doesn't automatically make it a success. It has to have development strength behind it.

So, I'll ask again:

What breakout exclusive(s) is/are going to sell the SteamBox?

Ratty4545d ago (Edited 4545d ago )

Steam machines are simply PCs that come pre-installed with SteamOS so it can't really have exclusives per se. Unless they were Steam exclusives.

It's as you say, though. It probably won't find a market. I can't imagine a lot of people will buy a steam machine when they can probably get a PC with the same hardware for cheaper/same and just install SteamOS on it. The controller and OS are nice ideas though.

Pandamobile4545d ago

The SteamBox isn't going to have exclusives. There's not point to it.

iPad4545d ago

"What breakout exclusives are announced for SteamBox? What developer is making an only-for-SteamBox title that all of us just GOTTA have? "

This is why I believe if Valve announces HL3, it'll be exclusive to SteamBox.

webeblazing4545d ago

why do they need to have exclusives when there are a ton of exclusives thats not on consoles.

Steven214545d ago

@webeblazing EXACTLY I don't own a gaming pc but I'd love to play civ 5. This is the perfect thing for myself. I definitely plan on getting one. This will be for all the PC games I've shown interest in but cannot have because my macbook sucks at playing games on. I for one am very excited for this and cannot wait to get my hands on one

Maxor4545d ago (Edited 4545d ago )

Exclusive is a console fanboy concept. The PC doesn't need exclusives because it already come stocked with enough blockbuster exclusives to fill up this entire page. For example games like Civ 5 have been selling in bunches on the PC for years and it's almost entirely digital and do I even need to mention the dozens of MMOs with millions paying $9-$15 per month??

The only question regarding Steam Machine is that will there be enough support for Linux to make it a viable alternative. If I'm in Microsoft place I would immediately release a HTPC OS with Kinect to kill this Linux gaming trend before it starts. Because if Linux gaming takes off it would be more of a threat to MS than the PS4 ever could be.

Wesley854545d ago

@Ipad Valve has already stated that it will not develop any exclusive games for the Steam Machine. That would include HL3. HL3 will come out for X1, PS4 and PC.

AndroidVageta4545d ago

Not only that but SteamOS is Linux based to begin with so it's gaming library is already WAYYY behind what you can get on Windows.

Rivitur4545d ago

What exclusives will it have? It will have pc games that's its exclusives...

Ju4545d ago (Edited 4545d ago )

Linux is fine with me. I haven't booted into Windows since forever. Cinnamon2 on Ubuntu13 works quite well, actually. If I could get games for it, I probably won't switch back ever. Well, depends if I start doing some real work with it again. And someone please port Netflix over. It probably won't replace my PS4; but could be a nice extension. I like a small yet powerful box which can also run desktop apps. Like the return of the "Home Computer". That would quite be nice; and no MS attached and no Apple pricetag either. Not sure if that'll work out, but I kinda hope it will. Finally some competition in the (home) desktop market and games might just be the driving force to make this happen.

Somebody4544d ago

Everyone's looking at this from a console perspective when we should see it from a PC perspective.

Yes, you could use the Angry Bird example to highlight the importance of software over hardware but you're leaving Android out of the equation. Android don't have any killer apps, that I'm aware of, but like the PC it gradually builds up steam over the years and now it flooded the market. Lumping a ton of games doesn't make it a success but it does keep it alive and worthwhile long enough for a killer app to come by which is pretty much how the PC and Steam operates over the years.

Speaking of killer apps, one funny thing that I've seen from these Steam news is the reactions. Console gamers love to boast their consoles' exclusives but when one suggests that Half Life 3 should be a PC/Steam Machine exclusive, everybody's up in arms and spam the dislike button.

It's like the PC is damned for not having exclusives but damned if it ever have one.

Ratty4545d ago

That depends on the Steam machine in question.

Kayant4545d ago

It's not. After reading more into it. It's an important stepping stone into making Linux a serious gaming platform. With SteamOS it gives devs a lightweight and standard distro on which they can work on. It also provides a more streamlined gaming OS like on consoles with little overhead so should use less resources & improve performance somewhat.

Even though SteamOS is going to be free it needs some way to which it can find a wider audience as well as show devs it's a serious platform and the Steam machines are just that.

They are consoles but unlike traditionally where there is one hardware base, steam machines will offer multiple hardware configs to suit your budget/performance metric. The machines will come with all the necessary items to get going. SteamOS, Controller, HDD. They also have the advantage of allowing you to install any other OS.

So for average gamers who have been wanting to get into PC gaming or have a hard time choosing between the two then this is the probably the most complete gaming package they can get for the money.

For me I would rather build my own & just install SteamOS when it's ready :)

AndroidVageta4545d ago

Linux is the problem with the Steam box though. People will buy one and expect it to run any PC game only to find that the harsh reality of it all is that it...can't.

Linux can't run a LOT of PC games...like 95%+ of them. So besides the Valve games and some others here and there the amount of games on the Steambox platform is what's going to kill it.

Like someone else said, just buy a Windows PC for roughly the same price and the problem is solved.

Rivitur4545d ago

Well you can install windows for it and some new games coming out will support linux.

PSN-JeRzYzFyNeSt4545d ago

pointless.. won't sell if you have a pc stick to that.

SkullBlade1694545d ago (Edited 4545d ago )

No, it's not.

People seem to think this is a small PC which you just plug a mouse + keyboard in to.

No, it's a console which has its own controller and custom Operating System, just like how the PS4 and Xbox One are.

This platform is simply more open for other hardware manufacturers to join in on the fun.

You could also turn your own PC in to one, but I don't think this is really the point of SteamOS.

a_squirrel4545d ago (Edited 4545d ago )

It is literally a PC but with a custom case (very well designed) and custom input (custom controller, possibly others. They were really interested in biofeedback but they found out that the hands are a bad place to try that instead of say, ears.)

This custom OS you speak of will be publicly available to download and install after release. SteamOS = Linux. That's actually really good though. Linux is perhaps the second most supported with drivers and software next to windows, and since this, drivers are going to get better, the old X-server (display server) that most linux OS run, is to be replaced in about a year in major Linux OS releases by either Wayland or Mir. Which one, it doesn't really matter.

Something that consoles tend to have is exclusives. Valve confirmed that they will not release their games exclusive to the steambox or Steam OS. That only pushes people away from their platform. *cough cough* Windows Live gaming.

The point is Linux is undergoing such an acceleration in development in years, it's really hard to understate how crazy fast this is all going to happen when it does.

Ju4545d ago (Edited 4545d ago )

It's not "just linux". It is a well defined distro which developers can rely on with a well defined online distribution system which Linux doesn't have (the package managers are not good enough). It will depend if Valve can reach a critical mass to make this attractive to developers. It will also be interesting to see how Valve can guarantee which HW is supported and with what baseline developers can work with. Then I can see it might be a nice open pseudo-console. And a dream for indies comes true - because anybody can program for it.

-Foxtrot4545d ago

I don't see what market they are going for

Most PC Gamers will have built their own gaming rigs and most people I know get very attactched to them.

Console gamers have the PS4/Xbox One/Wii U

If the Steam Machine was to try and bridge that gap between PC Gaming and Console Gaming while having it so Console Gamers could easily have an easy built PC then why didn't they just do a full on console. Why have multiple ones to choose from, with different graphics card etc.

Not to mention most console gamers are not going to like the controller. I don't and thats by looking at it...without analogue sticks I don't see it appealing the mass console gaming crowd.

Grave4545d ago

Disagree. If you've been paying attention you'd know that Valve is going to let gamers make changes as they see fit to the controller. Don't like it? Good. Change it and make it better.

Directly from Valve: "The Steam Controller was designed from the ground up to be hackable … We plan to make tools available that will enable users to participate in all aspects of the experience, from industrial design to electrical engineering."

-Foxtrot4545d ago

What if you don't know how to hack

Isn't that the whole point of these machines, for people who arn't that tec smart. People keep saying "Oh Valve are giving you a choice do it yourslef"....yeah but how. I mean I could use my PS4 controller but I don't want to, I want them to make a Steam controller with analogue sticks alongside the one without them....I mean isn't that the whole point of all this....choice.

Grave4545d ago

@Fox

You are right. Choice is the main point. You could use their controller, a PS4 controller, an Xbox 360 controller, an keyboard and mouse, any other 3rd part controller, or wait for someone to "hack" a Steam controller and give it analogue sticks.

a_squirrel4545d ago

@Foxtrot
Hacking can be really easy or hard. Hacking can be pulling out the touchpad and sticking in a PS4 type analog stick.

But even if you don't know...
"We plan to make tools available that will enable users to participate in all aspects of the experience, from industrial design to electrical engineering."

That makes it clear that you won't have to.

MidnytRain4545d ago (Edited 4545d ago )

It's a prebuilt PC with SteamOS. You can plug in whatever controller you want.

MrPerfect8134545d ago

Cant i just download steam, install it to my pc and do the same thing?

MidnytRain4545d ago

ether813

Pretty much. This product is for rich people who don't mind throwing money at everything, or people who are afraid to build their own PC.

silvacrest4545d ago

even then, you can just buy a pre built gaming PC

steam machines will have to bring something new and useful to be relevant

MidnytRain4545d ago (Edited 4545d ago )

The vast majority of prebuilt offers out there are scams. They charge you much more money for even less performance. Spending a little time educating oneself can save literally hundreds of dollars.

"It's Just So Lame" - RTGI Modder Thinks DLSS 5 Is Impressive But Shares AI Slop Sentiment

Pascal Gilcher calls DLSS 5 impressive but shares the "AI slop" sentiment, explaining the likely tech behind it and why he dislikes it.

I fail to see how this is AI shhhhlllloooop. Looking at the different games they showed, this has made many of them look far better.

isarai_lee51d ago (Edited 51d ago )

It's AI slop because it ignores the artists intent and changes the details ESPECIALLY when it comes to character faces. The scariest part of it is introducing it as the next stage of DLSS, a feature where the current iteration already has controversy surrounding it and for quite a lot of games cannot be fully disabled. So reasonably the precident is already set for what path this could take, and it's not good

blacktiger50d ago

In case you didn't watch the video then let me point just one part. It overrides the lighting. Then the question of what is the point of ray tracing cost and so on. Many of the lighting deletes shadow, including shadow on the face like eyes even chin.

Chard50d ago

Why stop at art when it comes to human input - why not just have AI play the game for us, remove human input altogether

theshizer51d ago

If you don’t like it, just don’t enable it. Personally I think it looks great from the videos I have seen.

isarai_lee51d ago

And what about when you can't? Cause there's plenty of games where you cannot fully disable dlss already, i mean we're well into an era where it's a major crutch for developers to cover up their cut corners, why would this be any different?

blacktiger50d ago

You are playing with people's money and allow Nvidia to scam you.

In case you didn't watch the video then let me point just one part. It overrides the lighting. Then the question of what is the point of ray tracing cost. This is all lie to raise the cost of the graphic card.

Andrew33651d ago

Making characters look more realistic not ok because we want the developer to decide on how the game was intended to look. - Internet

Change entire game through mods thus changing how the developers intended the game to be is ok. - Internet

isarai_lee51d ago

Something consumers can do to a product after they have purchased it, entirely optional and can always be undone with a fresh install

VS

The leading gaming hardware manufacturer making this the next iteration of the main AA/Upscaling technique that is heavily relied upod by modern devs and is not optional in most games.

Not at all the same but nice try

jwillj2k451d ago

At the moment you need 2 5090’s just to get an image on the screen so this is all vaporware until proven otherwise.

Andrew33651d ago

The good news is you can just not use it as well.

Christopher50d ago

It's all about choice in the end. But, I would say that calling it 'more realistic' is quite a stretch. It looks like AI art, and that's rarely realistic.

Urrakia3451d ago

All the comments I see are reminding me of how we got to the current state of gaming when microtransactions were first introduced: "It's completely optional guys, we promise! If you don't like it just don't buy it!"

I think we all know how that ended up.

Popsicle50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

I had the same exact thought the first time this was brought up in a separate article about a week ago. Took me straight back to the conversations surrounding “horse armor.” Just don’t buy it they said. Years later, many IPs I previously enjoyed are so infected with monetization schemes that I don’t even consider purchasing them anymore.

DLSS 5 and the like are the same thing wrapped in a different package. History rhymes but many of us never learn from it.

blacktiger50d ago

Biggest Scam. Overrides lighting and shadow. So why keep Ray tracing? It's all a scam to raise graphic card. We now see Nvidia with Microsoft downturn anything against them. Sony is next!
