Has the PS4 risen from the PS2′s ashes?

The PS2 was a freak console in sales terms; currently holding the title of highest selling gaming device of all time with a little over 155 million units and in many countries it’s still selling in low numbers. It was something of a perfect storm for Sony when the PS2 arrived. The price was excellent, it included a DVD player, it had a great fan base from the 100 million unit selling PS1, Sony were hot as a brand and life was great for them.

wonderfulmonkeyman4543d ago

That's saying too much.
Yeah, the PS4 is doing great, but there's no way that saying it's going to match, let alone top, the PS2 is a fair guess at this point, regardless of the high starting sales.

Not saying I wouldn't be pleased if it eventually made it there, but it really is too soon to call this thing the PS2 reborn.

LOL_WUT4543d ago

The ps4 is the ps2 reincarnated ;)

Snookies124543d ago

The PS2 comes back 2 generations later to make 4. It's just a fact. Lol, I kid. Seriously though, the PS4 is doing very well, and it's anyone's guess as to how far its reach will extend. We'll just have to wait and see.

mikeslemonade4543d ago (Edited 4543d ago )

PS4 140 mil+
X1 60 mil
WiiU 30 mil

Just don't understand why people keep predicting 80-90 mil X1s. So you are trying to tell me the X1 will be as successful as the 360??

Jughead34164543d ago

2.1 million units in just 2 weeks. I'd say they're definately on their way. Just wait until their 1st party studios start to unleash their games upon the world.

PSVita4543d ago

The greatness gene just skipped a generation

Locknuts4543d ago

In terms of how much I enjoyed the systems: PS3 > PS2.

Snookies124543d ago

Nah, the PS3 was great. It just needed a while to kick into full gear. There are still a ton of great titles coming out in 2014 for it! :]

hulk_bash19874543d ago (Edited 4543d ago )

The PS3 had great and successful new IP's come out like Uncharted, inFamous, and LBP just to name a few so I'd say greatness was there for the PS3 generation.

MarioAna4543d ago

The PS3 was great and for me a better generation than the PS2 thanks to the games. But the article is about sales. Sure it's early but the PS4 is going to be big.

It's saying way too much.

The PS2, and even PS3, were both far superior machines when they launched.

But I guess I'm probably wrong, since I'm one of those old-fashioned cooks who thinks games and media functionality matter more than arbitrary technical specifications.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi4543d ago

Not sure if I like the term ashes. That implies that the ps2 was destroyed or lost or was bad. I think the ps4 will rise from the ashes of last gen in general. It brought a lot of cool new IP's but it was overall bland.

kingdom184543d ago

Well I take this as how when a Phoenix dies it is reborn anew from its ashes. I believe this year it was when Sony "Killed" the PS2, as in they stopped producing them and the last game was also released to it as well.

hellvaguy4543d ago (Edited 4543d ago )

No because the ps2 had low end hardware (compared to gamecube and xbox), but stellar games. The ps4 has the best hardware, but the worse game lineup (so far & obviously will change).

So at this early stage, its really too soon to say when at first glance they are polar opposites.

thaiboy4543d ago

Worst game line up, seriously.

So far it has the best of what the Xbox One has to offer. Then sitting behind the curtains are the next games that are going to come from the likes of Naughty Dog, Insomniac and Santa Monica all of which will be exclusives and if those developers past games are anything to go buy (Uncharted, Last of Us, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance and God of War) they are sure to be amazing.

Also lets not for get the indi PSN devs like Pixel Junk and Hello games.

Lol, worst game lineup. Hilarious

hellvaguy4542d ago

Ok so not one of those games u listed are out right now on the ps4. Which is why I said right now. Think before u speak. U really do need to do that. Please?

Metallox4543d ago

From the ashes? I don't think so, the PS4 it's the next entry of a great line of hardware that is PlayStation.

They for sure chose the worst way to deal with it

-Foxtrot15d ago

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose16d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE16d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername15d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy16d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde16d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8616d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8616d ago (Edited 16d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300016d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle16d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments
