Killer Instinct: A Killer Let Down

VideoGamer: "Microtransactions aren't necessarily evil, but Killer Instinct's model deserves to get knocked out."

Im sorry but this is a silly article, why are you complaining about spending $5 for a fighting game (with 2 characters)?

The game is awesome, I spent $20 on the game and I am having a blast learning and playing the characters. I don't like the way that "gamers" are now just a bunch of crybaby's, whining over small things, instead of enjoying the games for what they are.

Belking4552d ago

"I don't like the way that "gamers" are now just a bunch of crybaby's, whining over small things, instead of enjoying the games for what they are."

I agree, and game journalist are some of the biggest whiners out there. Pay $400-$500 for a console and then whine about spending $5. Gamers can be so selfish sometimes. Always concerned with themselves and never want to see things from another point of view. That stuff is getting kind of old now.

towelie12884552d ago

argeed the game is really fun

bessy674552d ago (Edited 4552d ago )

Yeah, I really don't see the issue with the pricing structure. $20 gets you everything (6 characters now, 2 more later, arcade mode once all characters are released) minus a few customization options. I'm really not understanding what the problem with that is. If they charged $60 then sure, that would suck. But I feel that for $20 it's a pretty good value.

MizTv4552d ago

I agree
Like it or not $20 is a good deal
But I would rather have it in disc

sinjonezp4552d ago

I like killer instinct but the purchasing model is quite flawed. I mean 20 bucks get you next to nothing. I can go get umvc with more characters and stages mode than anything. Granted i spend a lot of money on a console i would jusy love to have a decent amount of content for my money.

pivotplease4552d ago

Yeah as far as MT go this game actually offers a completely fair system that I would say is very intuitive and flexible for a fighting game (as you may not even want some characters). I'm sure there will be a disc with all the content included in the future. My guess is that they went this route so they could focus on a smaller amount of content and get the game out for launch.

caseh4552d ago (Edited 4552d ago )

They should have just released it as a complete package instead of promising things later down the line. Take a look at what Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown gave you for £9.99 compared to what you get with KI.

I'll save you the hassle of looking it up, a complete game with a full roster. My main issue with KI is because of the free to play character, if you're in it primarily for online play you are going to come up against him (Jago) 99% of the time.

4logpc4552d ago

Once you get out of the first few levels of the ranking system, Jago shows up much much less.

mediate-this4552d ago

Go play super street fighter four A.E, 80 percent of the time you play ryu, ken or akuma. All shotos, and i bought all iterations of that game, now in ki once you rank up to where i am, your going to wish you were playing just jagos. You wil be seeing lots and lots of high level glacius and thinder n orchid, sadira too. And me sabrewulf lol.

A good jago is deadly tho.

princejb1344552d ago

I haven't played the game however 20 seems really cheap. But my concern is when a game is successful they will continue to develop these kind of microtransactions type of games. Than ones greed kicks in the microtransactions will start to get more expensive and less worth it. We're already seen these in mobile games where you would pay for a game and than they add a bunch of microtransactions to fully enjoy the game

caseh4552d ago (Edited 4552d ago )

Most mobile games allow you to plough time into it to get all items. It's time consuming but rewarding. Not every game but most.

Warframe on PS4 uses the same model, but if you grind you can earn pretty much everything without paying a penny.

KI doesn't work like this sadly, not sure about Forza. It's setting a benchmark for future games if you ask me.

mediate-this4552d ago

@caseh, ki you can grind to get everything except characters. All you pay for in ki is the characters. The more oune you play you earn kp, you spend kp on on gear, levels, everything.

N4Flamers4552d ago

I really can't call it. This could be good or bad. You get 8 characters for 20 bucks without a story or anything to flesh out the game. You only get basic costumes for them too. Will you have to pay for Story mode? How long can the roster keep your interest? I don't think the model is terrible but the game seems bare bones. Only time will tell.

NemesisAU4552d ago

Story mode is included with the $20 purchase and will be released in a few months with the 2 new characters

N4Flamers4552d ago

Thanks for the info. I personally like what netherealm did with mk. They gave you enough content that it was worth the 60 dollars. I was hoping more companies would follow in their footsteps. I can't say I hate this business model because it has not been around that long and initially seems like a good investment. Like I said 8 characters is a light roster who knows how long it will hold people's attention. The game doesn't seem bad just unfinished.

PsylentKiller4552d ago

The game is $40 to unlock everything. It's free if you want to try the entire game with one character. How is this a bad business model for the players?

creatchee4552d ago

It's bad for people that like to whine about something where this isn't anything else to whine about lol

SliceOfTruth8884552d ago

its actually only 19.99 to unlock everything the extra 20 is for the original game and costumes that will eventually be available to 19.99 paid gamers

Veneno4552d ago

I think out of all the crazy, insane, anti consumer ideas Microsoft had flung at this new generation, this Free 2 Play model for a fighting game actually makes GOOD Business sense for MS and the consumer.

Its nice to only pay for the characters I want to play as. Saves me money. and it's entirely free with one character so I can figure out if I even want to spend any money at all on it? What's not to like?

caseh4552d ago

How can you tell if you like a character or not without using them? You can't, unless you pay for them. You may find you don't like that character, then feel like you've been fleeced out of extra money just to find out you don't like 'em.

Can you not see the catch 22 twist they've put on it?

Captain Qwark 94552d ago

@caseh

and if you like the character available, then hell the game is free. this is a solid pricing model imo esp for a fighting game

caseh4552d ago

@Captain Qwark 9

Don't know how into your fighting games you are but having a choice of 1 character in all modes is basically an extended demo.

I fail to see how this is a solid pricing model to be honest. I guess we'll see how the game shapes up within the fighting community. It will no doubt make this years Evo but whether or not it lasts past that is another matter.

pivotplease4552d ago

It is essentially a demo but there's nothing wrong with that. If you can get the game for free and then grab say two of your favourite characters for 10 bucks that's a pretty good deal. I think if you compare it to a fighting game releasing at 60 dollars and think of it like you're getting a sixth of the content for a sixth of the price it's a great deal. Usually when I play a fighting game I end up hating more than half the characters anyway and also fighters get boring quickly so not having to spend full price on a game that will last you a week is nice. Not even getting an xbox and I'm defending this model.

Volkama4552d ago (Edited 4552d ago )

I hate micro-transactions, I really do. But Killer Instinct's model is OK. You can choose to pay a fair, flat price to get everything.

Micro-transactions in Forza, Crimson Dragon, Ryse, Gran Turismo and so on are far far worse. Those have no flat asking price, just a bottomless pit trying to entice you to throw money in it instead of enjoying the game. Sick.

arbitor3654552d ago

40$ for 6 characters. you really have to ask why this is a bad business model?

CYCLEGAMER4552d ago

Take $20 off of that price tag and add 2 extra characters then ask urself the same question again.

MrPerfect8134552d ago

I really liked this business model honestly. Wasnt $20 bucks for all the fighters, which i think that is what i did, and $40 if you want everything?

So i paid $20 for a fighter that is rated somewhere 7/10 to 8/10 and i think it was great value.

I really want Zoo Tycoon but not for $60...maybe it will be Xbox Ones first games for gold game next year.

kewlkat0074552d ago

This game owns...it will get better with TJ Combo and Fulgore..

svoulis4552d ago

I bought the 20$ pack as well, I was happier doing that then spending 40$ for the same thing plus...the snes version of the game.

Killer Instinct: The Most Underrated Fighting Video Game in History

Killer Instinct is like the forgotten cousin at the fighting game family reunion.

yeah they were such good and fun games but they never really reached the mainstream audience. Killer Instinct was widely known and respected.

Cacabunga398d ago

Killer instinct is great, especially on snes but it’s not the most underrated fighter.. for me it’s Power Stone. So much potential in this series

Jawsh666398d ago

Bloody Roar was a game that had a sick concept but wasn’t made the best. I’d say Killer Instinct was the opposite of that, it was well made but the roster of characters were so similar to every other fighting game in that era that it ended up feeling like more of the same. I could be wrong that’s just how I remember it at the time and I played a ton of KI on SNES because it was one of the first games I owned.

PRIMORDUS398d ago

I loved this game in the arcade, my main was Jago, Ultra Combo!!! https://www.youtube.com/wat...

DivineHand125397d ago

That combo was way overkill 😂

PRIMORDUS396d ago

I know haha, I loved Jago.

Bathyj398d ago

You're kidding?
It enjoyed probably more success than it deserved.
Unlike Tobal 2

MeteorPanda397d ago

Tobal 2 was awesome. Sold really well cause art similarity to dragon ball

jjb1981397d ago

I remember trying my hardest to learn that "Ultra... Ultra.... Ultra...." finish. Such a great fighting game.

Popsicle397d ago (Edited 397d ago )

I can tell you definitely got some SNES time in. The slight differences in the ports due to hardware constraints were interesting. For example, the arcade version was Ultraaaa Coooommboooooooo! versus Ultra….Ultra….Ultra on the SNES.

Though SNES overachieved as a port for as demanding as a game KI was.The arcade version was one of the first cabinets with a dedicated hard drive and the SNES version was 32 megabyte cartridge which was huge for that system at the time.

jjb1981396d ago

Yeah, for sure. My local childhood arcade was always packed and it was hard to get a game in but once the SNES version came out, I was hooked. I can still feel the click of the power button.

I'll have to get this! Been a big fan of KI since the very first one.

Petebloodyonion906d ago (Edited 906d ago )

I love KI (still play the old arcade version) but feel like the Xbox version is like a big intimidating chessboard with no easy way to instruct you to play chess.
The game is so deep in terms of little things to do that it makes Smash Bros melee look like a casual experience.
Honestly, doing a combo Breaker is punish/reward by itself but hey you can add a counterbreaker.
Here's what you also need to know
Breaking Shadow-linker
Instincts
Shadow counter
Auto double,
linker, manual
ender
etc,

There isn't going to be any chance of this being played at tournaments unless it appears on all platforms like all fighting games.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH910d ago

SF5 didn’t appear on all consoles and was still played at Tournaments. I’ve seen KI tournaments recently so I don’t think your opinion is accurate.
