Killzone: Shadow Fall Review | Spong

Killzone has become, over its nine years, part of the PlayStation's heritage. Since its origins on PlayStation 2, it has spawned onto five different versions of Sony's machines, three console and two handheld, and with each release it's steadily improved and refined its recipe.

FlunkinMonkey4545d ago

It's funny how KZ's reviews seem to have improved more and more as reviewers have actually given the MP a chance, compared to the initial assumptions, pre-ejaculating (review wise) 'journalists'.

KZ is one of my favorite games to play, on the ps4. When I'm over Battlefield, I always pop it in. (don't even get me started on how big DICE dropped the ball)

It really is a great game, and I appreciate all the hard work, and detail, they put into the game.(a little noob/ish feeling at times {cod death streaks, as loadouts}, but it's still fun)

abzdine4545d ago (Edited 4545d ago )

i really have a problem with this new episode of Killzone.
For those who played the MP of the 2 and 3, don't you fell that some sounds are missing? It's so quiet it doesn't feel intense when i play MP.
I hate the Loadout system it's a lazy ass thing because they cut class number but still give you a mix of abilities to equip everytime. I think it takes so long time to edit a loadout with the right things everytime, i really prefer if they kept the classes as they were before.

This really makes me thing that this game has been rushed and 6 more months would make it amazing.

The game looks insane and the 1080p 60FPS add so much but in terms of immersion it's a 0/10.

Please guys share your experiences with multiplayer.

Jdoki4545d ago (Edited 4545d ago )

@abzdinbe

Not tried MP yet as still working through SP. I did really enjoy the MP in previous KZ games though.

One point you make that I really agree with even in SP is that the game lacks tension. I'm not sure if that comes from audio or game design - but I am not finding KZSF an intense experience. It's just a decent FPS with amazing graphics.

NewMonday4544d ago

my problem is with story and some game design on SP, but I love the MP, as for load-out's I agree, GG respond quickly to community feedback so they should improve it if enough players raise the issue.

@Septic

I love Metro/Grand Bazzar, BF3 is full of servers dedicated to these maps.

GarrusVakarian4545d ago

I have noticed that too, i found it hilarious that so many reviewers completely overlooked the multiplayer seeing as that's where KZ shines.

My copy should arrive today, can't wait to play it.

Gazondaily4545d ago

I just don't see the appeal for the MP. I just think its terribly derivative and boring.

The maps are uninspiring, the weapons are decent but nothing original. The one shot kill sniper rifle is OP, for obvious reasons. There are only 3 classes.

The maps have silly choke holds that promote spawn camping. Take park for example. You get locked in silly corridor battles that make Operation Metro look like a good map. Get an engineer class, put a turrent on one lane and shoot into the dooryway leading out of the spawn. Easy multikills.

The shield powerup promotes camping. Because the one-way shields are stationary people just prop them up and sit there firing through them. Get a few people doing it alongside each other and it becomes silly.

I pick the scout class and I admit its overpowered. The melee is overpowered, one hit kill. And the teleport ability just gets you out of danger immediately.

There's nothing in this game's MP to write home about apart from the 60fps gameplay. Its standard deathmatch fare with no real identity of its own and its scarce in content.

Believe me, I've tried to like it and I just don't see the appeal for some. Each to their own though.

abzdine4545d ago (Edited 4545d ago )

They compensate the lack of classes by adding loadouts, which is a terrible bad idea cause it takes too long time to edit a loadout after each death.

Read my comment above.

EDIT:
The loadout fits really well with Killzone: Mercenary because you can equip ALL weapons and gadgets from SP campain and you use same money for both but in SF they still keep classes which makes no sense.
Why not give the player the choice between using classes (and keep the ones that already exist) or loadout?
Killzone 2 had a perfect mix of them both, and with the General rank you can equip whatever ability with whatever class and gives a feeling of accomplishement cause the more you play the more you get used to the game the more things you unlock.
When everything is thrown at your face from the beginning..... smh.

EDIT:
Where is the amazing Operations mode from KZ3?? Was great fun with friends.

Gazondaily4545d ago

@abzdine

Yeah they really seem to have diluted the experience from the previous games. It seems like they have stripped away features. Clan support has been much requested for example, I can't see it here.

I really think its just a rushed release for launch.

SpringHeeledJack4545d ago

Looking at your comment history you was never going to like it anyway. Having little digs at playstation games while bigging xbone games has got old now. I'l never know how you find the time to supposedly play killzone if you are playing killer instinct so much.

The MP is shadowfall is great and very fun, the levelling system is a breath of fresh air and brings skill to levelling. Custom game modes eliminate the problems with the snipers and power shields but you didn't mention that or haven't really played it.

Most games have 1 shot kills with the sniper, but you say nothing about them, give it a rest because it's the norm.

Gazondaily4545d ago

@Springheeledjack

What are you trying to say? Are you saying I hardly played the game? I've played plenty and you can check my PSN ID if you want to be an idiot about it.

Also, check abzdine's comment history too. What about him?

"Most games have 1 shot kills with the sniper, but you say nothing about them, give it a rest because it's the norm."

What are you on about? One shot kill to the toe for a standard sniper rifle? You chat s***.

Stop crying over my opinion of the game. If you like it fair enough, but don't accuse me of being biased when a cursory glance at YOUR comment history just shows how biased you are.

SpringHeeledJack4545d ago

Sorry but the only idiot here is YOU if you can't even be bothered or didn't realise you can set up your own custom game and turn off the things you mentioned.

Like i said looking at YOUR comment history (which is s disgusting and abusive) shows your opinion means nadda pal and is really no surprise.

Let's be honest you are now working for a site so pretend to sit on the fence but the mask slips every now again lol. Try harder kid.

Gazondaily4545d ago

"Sorry but the only idiot here is YOU if you can't even be bothered or didn't realise you can set up your own custom game and turn off the things you mentioned. "

Lol what? Sorry I didn't realise there was a magic 'make better levels' or 'better weapons' or 'better classes' options. Learn to read then understand my post.

My comment history is disgusting and abusive.....right...

The irony of someone like you calling me 'kid'.

I've wasted enough time on you. Shed your crocodile tears elsewhere. All reviews are conspiracies and only you know what's best right?

15 Last-Gen Games That Still Compete with Current-Gen Graphics

GB: "Say what you will about the state of the industry, but even as games evolve, their graphics remain a key aspect. Even some of the biggest flops this year sport some gorgeous visuals, as publishers and developers push the boundaries of what’s possible, pouring years of time and money into their work."

Quantum Break and Ryse are two that I was really surprised did not get an FPS boost option when played on the Series X|S. when i started playing both on the XBO, I thought they are both good, but after playing them also on my steam deck (in 60fps) I just cant go back and play the base games on XB. They really benefit from that faster frame rate.

Driveclub is another i wished had a HFR mode on PS5.

MatrixxGT560d ago

Most games this gen are the exact same except now we get faster loading through SSD and a res and fps bump. Graphically not much has improved, hell most last gen games are being relabeled and resold as “remastered” with the aforementioned updates.
I haven’t seen or played anything on either platform that couldn’t be run on last gen. Guess the law of diminishing returns is really showing itself these days.

127maXimus560d ago

Most games from 20 years ago are basically the same as today, with resolution and fps upgrades. The AI is still just as braindead as it always has been, worlds are full of static, boring characters that do the same thing over and over.

Demetrius559d ago

Smh another reason why graphics haven't improved that much is because most devs too caught up on cross gen. Ps4 was/still a dope console but time has moved on we're halfway close to a ps6 reveal and devs still will be making games on last gen in 2025. Then theres Microsoft purposely got the Xbox series s that causes more devs to try to pull strings as much as they can smh. It's a mixed bag of stuff, the only ones I see pushing hardware is sonys studios and even some indie games look better

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX567d ago (Edited 567d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne567d ago (Edited 567d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro567d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken567d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown567d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72567d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken567d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya566d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast567d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood567d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

Killzone After a Decade in Hibernation

It's been 10 years since Killzone: Shadow Fall arrived for PlayStation 4 early adopters, and there's no sign of another sequel.

Obscure_Observer910d ago

Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer.

Vengeance1138910d ago

lmao sadly? Are you pretending to have actually played the series lol Sorry bud, no Killzone on Xbox.

Cacabunga910d ago

With the downfall of COD and BF, Killzone def. has a chance to make a groundbreaking comeback

910d ago
Notellin909d ago (Edited 909d ago )

What a low-functioning reply here typical of the fanboy N4G community.

Rimeskeem910d ago

“Dumped”

I think it’s called moving on.

Barlos909d ago (Edited 909d ago )

They brought out 4 main games and 2 spin offs: one on PSP and one on Vita. That's a decent run for any series. I also understand that Shadow Fall wasn't a success commercially despite it coming out at PS4 launch, and as a big Killzone fan even I couldn't get into it, so I think Sony/Guerrilla could see it was time to move on.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love another Killzone game in the vein of KZ2 but it's just not happening. Hell, I'd even take a remake or remaster of the first 3 games.

I'd hardly say it was "dumped" though, it spanned 3 console generations and 2 handheld generations.

1Victor909d ago

@obscured:”Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer”

Happily it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer( edited to reflect the writer true feelings and allegiance)
Kill zone was a FPS far ahead of its glitched competitors with nauseating bad camera angles, 10 years old screaming curses like a drunk sailor and bot aiming assist.

ChasterMies909d ago

“Sadly”?

The Horizon games were among the best games of all time. Killzone Shadowfail wasn’t.

Shane Kim909d ago

True, but damn the memories of KZ2 multiplayer. Still no MP as fun as that to this date.

Mr_cheese909d ago

Dumped and shelved are two different things

Tacoboto909d ago

And Sony as a whole dumped the FPS genre so they wouldn't have products competing with COD and (until purchase) Destiny.

GoodGuy09910d ago

I loved the KZ2+3 campaigns and MP in 2. There could be so much more done with the franchise. Horizon although good, I wish they'd go back to this wonderful IP. Take a break from Horizon please.

Flawlessmic910d ago

Agreed dude, I would absolutely love a reboot of the series, one can only hope that either resistance or killzone makes a return.

Have nothing but great memories, especially of the first 3 games, but all 4 were show stoppers graphically.

blackbeld910d ago

To making it a successful reboot they have to change that buttons layout! Make it playable like the cod button layout. Otherwise I’ll skipping it again.

Rynxie909d ago

And that's the reason why many fps games failed. Instead of being original and catering to it's fans, they tried to make it like cod. No, kz doesn't need cod button layout. It needs to be like it was on kz2 or balanced liked kz3.

Lightning77910d ago

I think Kill Zone would do great in Sony's LS push. As well as MAG reboot and bring back Resistance into LS.

Sharky231909d ago

@Lightning77

I think WarHawk would have been a great Live service game.

thorstein910d ago

Killzone games were so polished. The gameplay was just simple joy. MP was one of the best experiences.

I remember KZ3, just staring at how awesome they animated the water and then getting wasted because of it.

P_Bomb910d ago

It’s been a decade? Now I’m sad.

LiViNgLeGaCY909d ago

I hear ya bud. We're due for a revival.
