The Evil Within New Screenshots

Bethesda released yesterday these new screens for the upcoming survival horror game, The Evil Within. The game is set to release in 2014 for pretty much every platform out there, PC, old and next gen consoles excluding the WiiU.

CLOUD19834549d ago

Yep very nicely said, RE5/6 we get was not from this man the father of RE so u can't even call them true/original RE they were very bad wannabes survival horror games & bad games in general so it's time to play a "real" survival horror game from the man who invent the genre himself.

kraideral4549d ago

If it's anything like RE4 combined with a little Dead Space for boss fights, plus a little TLoU for ammo and supplies conservation, it will be a must play game. If not well...

Matt6664548d ago

Don't forget RE4 was bad, it what started the RE action BS factor off, anyone who says 4,5 or 6 is good clearly has no idea what a survival horror is.

MehmetAlperTR4549d ago

Actually RE5 was not from Shinji Mikami like CLOUD1983 said. This is real survival horror from Shinji Mikami. But screenshots are not new. They released them months ago. Anyway the game is looking good. They are using modified ID TECH 5 Engine for this game. Shinji san said graphics are important for the horror game. And he also said when we play this game, and if we ll say this is the most terryfing horror game we ever played, then Shinji san will be happy. Sorry for my English, I learned it via playing games.

FANTA11804549d ago

this could be really good ...

finally something reminicent of the resident evil original games.

pecorre4549d ago

I pre-ordere this game when it was announced. My most wanted games along with The Witcher 3.

Rzep4549d ago

Looks like every Resi-like survival horror. Don't really see why people are so excited. Just because a big name is attatched to the project does not guarantee anything.

kraideral4549d ago

My thoughts exactly and from what I have seen till now, it has nothing to get excited about.

Rzep4549d ago

The problem I have with this genre, is that it's a horror only in theme. It's not actually scary. There is pretty much no way that a Resi-like game can compete with Amnesia for example.

Kyosuke_Sanada4549d ago

Why's that? Is ii because of actual combat, monster design, setting? I mean I played Amnesia too and I love the game but would I place it over Resident Evil? No but nor vice versa, but mainly because it offers a different type of scare factor. I am not saying you are wrong to stating opinion but I really want to know why and I mean that in the most non-aggressive way possible.

Rzep4549d ago

Well simply put the last scare Resident Evil (as an example of this type of survival horror) gave me was the dog jumping through the window back in RE1. Combat has always been bad. Even when I still loved Resi I hated the combat.

Still not sure what you want to hear? To me these games simply aren't scary. Maybe it's the weak monster design, maybe it's the ridiculous story which was always more hilarious than suspensful. It could simply be that a game that features so many weapons and shootouts empowers the player too much. I mean Resi3 had Nemesis, which was a pretty neat idea, but by the end of that game my only thought when he showed up was an exasperated "Oh boy, here we go again".

To me the sound design in Resi was lacking till, man I don't know which game. Maybe the GC game with the booty nurse. Compared to Amnesia or even Outlast, Resident Evil seems like amateur hour when it comes to using sound to build tension.

I am not going to talk about what the Resi-likes and games have become. Re5 was weak and silly. Re6 is a joke of a survival horror.

Kyosuke_Sanada4549d ago (Edited 4549d ago )

You raise some valid points and for fans of the series similar to me I guess its a case of "one man's trash is another man's treasure" For me, I found the combat in Resident Evil (at least from the first to Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2) to be good mainly because it was made to be "realistic" in a sense that you don't feel like a one man army due to your movement speed and ammo count. Resident Evil always had a great formula of building a player's faith in a weapon only to strike down to size due to a monster or situation which has the same tension effect as not having one at all.

Sound design, for the weapons I wholeheartedly agree that they usually sounded like pea shooters until Resident Evil Outbreak and the two entries on Gamecube (Zero and Remake) but the ambience, especially the music from Masami Ueda and Tetsuya Shibita always made me feel uneasy. Even the tracks created for the save rooms in the game made me feel "Hey, you are safe for now...." that always clicked with me I guess.

Art design was top notch, I am a sucker for pre-rendered backgrounds. ReMake and Resident Evil Zero are ranked in my top 5 use of it in a horror game ever.....

Damn I am starting to ramble lol.....anyways I am saying that for me is each Resident Evil always had something that grabbed me into it with the GC entries being the best well-rounded packages for me. The Evil Within looks like it will be paying respects to it's predecessors instead of throwing away everything that made the genre great back in the day.

Like I said before, I am not trying to prove you wrong or anything because different strokes for different folks and I respect that because input from everybody is what developers need to hear in order to make their games better in the long run. I just wanted to share with you and the author some of the things old-school RE fans enjoyed so you can have a better perspective why we are excited for this release.

MehmetAlperTR4548d ago (Edited 4548d ago )

Rzep People are exiting about this game because this game is made by Shinji Mikami. Who is a Creator of a Resident Evil 1-2-3-4-Code Veronica- 1 Remake and Zero. RE5-6 was not from Shinji Mikami. He quit from cRapCom after RE4. And please read my comment at the upper area about this game. Shinji Mikami is one of the best about Survival Horror Game. He has got a lot of Master Pieces about Survival Horror. I know what you mean by RE 5-6. But those games are not belong to Shinji Mikami San.

The Evil Within Deserved More: A Great Horror Series Left Behind

The Outerhaven writes: While I hold Bethesda's The Evil Within series as some of the best Survival Horror games available, it's clear that Bethesda has no intention of revisiting the series. While Capcom is still working on its Resident Evil series, I look back at the now-dead survival horror series from Bethesda, wondering why the series was left wide open, and yet still not revisited.

An OK horror series left behind. It had some great ideas, but it never knew how to play to its strengths. Instead, it came out like just another RE4 clone.

I would love for a third entry to come out, but it needs to learn to lean in on the psychological aspect and move away from the generic "pew pew" ideology at the center of the gameplay loop. It doesn't need to abandon it; it just needs to put it into better context, is all.

Also, try a first-person perspective instead. Too many 3rd-person games with nothing to offer but an avatar taking precious screen space. At least make it an actual option and not that janky-ass mess the second game pretended to have.

Venoxn4g332d ago

Love both games, hope that we will get third game

i really didnt like the 2nd game.

...they didn't close, they changed owners. As far as i know HFR2 is still in the works.

Lightning77589d ago

Hifi 2 is still in development. The devs themselves said what they wanted to do with the sequel.

jznrpg409d ago (Edited 409d ago )

They closed then got new owners

The Evil Within Anniversary Edition?

Good God. We were robbed.

I would imagine they would have improved the graphics and animations to bring them more in line with the second game. Wishful thinking but it would have been really cool if they redid the voice lines from the first game aswell with the same actors from the second, I felt they had more personality in the sequel. The only person I thought gave it a bit more than the others was Jennifer Carpenter as Kidman but the sequels voice actress did a great job aswell.

Microsoft is going to do f*** all with the IP and we'll never see a second Ruvik and Seb showdown.

I hope Krafton goes back and gets it after Hi-Fi Rush 2 if it was only because they didn't want the initial purchase to get complicated.

Neonridr588d ago

I preferred the first game to the second to be honest.

-Foxtrot588d ago

I wasn't really making a point at what game was overall better, just the voices were so flat in the first one and it would be nice if the animations and the like would be improved upon.

FinalFantasyFanatic588d ago

I really got to get around to playing the first one, I really liked the second game.

Venoxn4g588d ago

It hurts so bad knowing that there might have been new content for Evil Within..love those games

CrimsonWing69588d ago

This is one of those things I’ll never forgive Xbox for.

127maXimus588d ago

What a stupid, short sided move by Microsoft. Comparatively it would have been cheap for them to hang onto their only Japanese studio, with actually good games that people want to play. I struggle to understand how Phil Spencer is still employed. At this point it is Kathleen Kennedy levels of failure.

BlackIceJoe587d ago

Well said about him being Microsoft's version of Kathleen Kennedy.

All he has been doing is to destroy Xbox and it is unbelievable he falls upwards.

This shouldn't have happened.

Who's next..

JEECE698d ago

Ninja Theory, most likely.

tay8701698d ago

Ninja theory. Others will follow as well. The smaller studios MS owns should all be worried. Maybe MS will try and release some of their games day and date on ps5 to save some of these studios.

jznrpg698d ago

I can see Ninja Theory. At least Tango made a game that was reviewed well. Ninja Theory spent a lot of years to release a tech demo that didn’t do well at all.

repsahj698d ago

I get it that Hellblade 2 is a boring game, but I hope they are not the next to be closed.

ABizzel1698d ago

@repssahj

Ninja Theory is likely on the chopping block too. They released Bleeding Edge which bombed, took 4 years to release Hellbalde 2 which doesn’t seem to be doing well, and still have Project Mara in limbo. They’re high on the chopping block.

MS was likely expecting their God of War / Uncharted quality game from NT based on Heavenly Sword, Enslaved, DmC, and to an extent Hellblade 1, but NT hasn’t delivered since Hellblade 1 which was 7 years ago.

Sonic1881698d ago

And Obsidian after Avowed releases

I rarely agree with you but on this I do!

PRIMORDUS698d ago

3 trillion MS is worth, yet they do this, well Phil the shit bag did. No studio needed to be let go, when you are worth this much.

anast698d ago

Sad, but I see characters and posters of either less than average or barely average games.

LoveSpuds698d ago

Have to disagree here duder, with respect. Evil Within was a good game and the sequel was fantastic, as was HiFi Rush. I'd concede Ghostwire was pretty average but regardless, shuttering a studio which just put out MS best game in donkeys years was complete shithousery on XBox' part.

Einhander1972698d ago (Edited 698d ago )

Microsoft paid 8B to buy Zenimax then fired well over 1000 people from Zenimax between the time they closed the deal and they announced these shut downs.

People talk about the 1900 they fired most recently, but that was only one wave of three sets of layoffs from their gaming division so far this generation totalling around 5000 people this generation. Not counting the dozen plus studios they canned last gen including Lionhead the original Fable developers.

anast698d ago

By every real metric HiFi was an average game. I don't see an Evil within poster in the thumb, which is a shame, because if they threw their weight behind that IP, they might have still been around.

LoveSpuds698d ago

I don't understand how you can say it was average in every metric when it garnered the reviews it did?
