IGN - Xbox One Review

IGN - "If you’re purely interested in gaming, you may want to wait until the platform stabilizes or drops in price. However, if you’re more like me and are tired of the dumbest screen in your house being your TV, the Xbox One will change your living room forever. Sure, you’re likely to experience some quirks – but Microsoft is pioneering new territory here. I, for one, will never turn off my console and TV with a controller again."

Abash4559d ago

Which is actually right, the Xbox One isn't just up to the standards the PS4 has set with all it's gaming capabilities. While both consoles will improve over time, Sony really made a console that is as close to flawlessness than any console has ever come with the PS4

Kingthrash3604559d ago

agreed.
the xbox brand was supposed to be a gaming brand. i think they should have made another device for the tv stuff and focused more on the x1. they took a chance by using a popular brand to sell a new idea. problem is people think pure gaming when they hear xbox. they could have made xbox tv on the side like sony did with the vita.
this whole idea was a huge mistake. for thos who enjoy the x1..great im glad you like it. but im speaking from a business and gamining aspect. looking at numbers, specs, and the overall console theme was a bad choice and a major flop.
i doubt it will sell more than the 360.

aCasualGamer4559d ago

This was actually a pretty good review of the console.

I feel in the end that the score was too generous considering that we are gamers and we want a gaming console more than anything else, and that there is no excuse for releasing a weaker console at a higher price. BUT, even with that said, i can see the potential. I just wish they'd executed better and wish they'd PR'd it better.

OhReginald4559d ago

@xHeavYx

its 7.8 given by IGN's xbox team. the ps4 was scored by IGN's playstation team.

tehnoob34559d ago

They have been near flawless in terms of marketing, and ease of use/ dev friendly hardware, but I would've liked more horsepower. The other console generations had hardware that was incredible for the time, worth much more than the price of the console.

Mystogan4559d ago

PS4 is far from flawless. Its UI simply sucks. And its not fair to say that X1 doesn't have all the gaming capabilities the PS4 offers. What exactly are those capabilities besides more pixels?

Prime1574559d ago

@mystogan

More like, ps4 has all the potential to have the same features as xbone AND more pixels.

Death4559d ago

"ps4 has all the potential to have the same features as xbone AND more pixels."

Ps4 could have the same features, but does not. At launch it does have more pixels in some games. Time will tell if the Xbox can output more games in native 1080p and it will also tell if PS4 can have the same features. History has shown that Sony has no problem stringing along its fans in regards to new features that are missing at launch. It took years for Sony to finally confirm cross game chat wasn't possible on the PS3. The PSEye will never see in the dark, voice commands will never work seamlessly since they aren't able to run in a background OS, and the attach rate for the cam will prevent devs from using it. You can lie to yourself and say the features can come with a firmware update, but you are better off sticking with saying you don't want a game console capable of anything more than games.

ThatEnglishDude4559d ago

@mystogan

What's wrong with the PS4 UI? It's sure as fuck a lot better than the unorganized, messy, cluttered look of the Xbox One/Windows 8.

ziggurcat4559d ago

@ mystogan

PS4 UI is clean, simple, and not filled with confusing tiles while being bombarded with ads. It's also really fast.

Ritsujun4559d ago

Lower than 8.
Xbone180/720p got IGN'd.

pyramidshead4558d ago (Edited 4558d ago )

I'd like to dip my unsalted pretzel into mystogan's comment for some seasoning.

moparful994558d ago

@Death

"Ps4 could have the same features, but does not. At launch it does have more pixels in some games. Speaking of missing features and stringing customers along was it not the 360 that used antiquated dvd9 citing we dont need larger discs, was it also the 360 that didn't have an HDMI port, built in wifi, and non proprietary hard drives? Not to mention the lack of true 7.1 dolby support that never came to the system and the shoddy hardware that was known before launch.. Despite lacking all of those features and terrible failure rate 360 fans constantly defended the 360 citing more games, better games, and a more cohesive experience. Yet whenever the shoe is on the other foot and Sony is the better gaming console at launch you come out and bash the PS4 for lakcing all of those unproven features that the X1 has... Hypocrisy is strong with you..

Big difference this time around is that the PS4's gaming clout is much stronger than that of the X1. Add in the fact that Sony has the better lineup of first party studios and a cheaper price and its a recipe for success...

Least they didn't get someone who could be biased....they got Fran Mirabella to do it, the guy used to do the N64 pages and Gamecube pages on IGN.

If you have a console which is lower in specs BUT costs more then it's rival then the score is pretty justified in my opinion.

Least with the PS3 you were paying more for more..."Blu ray is crap" they said, "It will die out"....well how things change.

MasterCornholio4559d ago

I pretty much agree. Microsofts focus on the Xbox One being an "all in one" device caused them to forget about the most important aspect of a console and thats gaming. Seriously why would anyone pay 100$ more for an inferior gaming experience unless all their friends game on that system or it contains the exclusives that their interested in ?

quaneylfc4559d ago

I think the bias reviewers are on this site. its ridiculous. they're both for gamers otherwise im playing the wrong fucking medium on my console.

N4G users need to stop being biased and comment fairly. the ps4 is more powerful, comes with a charge cable and is cheaper, those points can tip it in the favor of being better but the xbox actually has more positive reviews on aggregate. does that make the games worse on the xbox one? it does on this site.

unfortunately, reviews are the only thing that make the enjoyability of a game 'factual.'

The most enjoyable game i have played so far is Ryse and i hate sword-fighting games. its only opinionated, there are no facts.

nobody can say that the xbox isnt about gaming when you can play games on it, it just sounds either biased or backwards. take it upon yourselves to decide

p.s. i am not biased, my ps4 is coming on the 29th yaaaay

Volkama4559d ago (Edited 4559d ago )

Wuh? I don't think many people said blu-ray was cr** or would die out. Just that it was expensive, and unnecessary for games at the time. And it was.

The 360 was still able to offer Skyrim and GTAV well past it's expected lifespan.

Incidentally, the blu-ray drive on the One is still completely unnecessary for games. You install every game to the HDD, you could do that with multiple DVDs and not compromise a game in the slightest. It just doesn't add $200 dollars to the price any more, and the multi-media functionality is part of the package too.

PC games also come on DVDs.

So what has changed?

Sony exploited their PS fanbase to win a media format war.

All hail Sony.

Mystogan4559d ago

Yes its lower specs wise, but are you purposely forgetting about Kinect? The PS4 doesn't come with a PSeye and its not even as advanced as Kinect 2. The price is perfectly acceptable. Unless you don't like what Microsoft is trying to do with it. And you like Sony exclusives. Then yes the pS4 is for you. But if you want new gaming experiences with kinect and want a console that can do much more than just gaming. And you like Microsoft IP's. Xbox One is for you.

Mister_Dawg4559d ago (Edited 4559d ago )

Blu ray is crap and will die out.

Digital baby. Thats the future right there.

Believe it.

@Mystogan. Very well said dude. A voice of reason on n4g. You my friend are few and far between.

MysticStrummer4559d ago

"are you purposely forgetting about Kinect?"

Until Kinect is shown to be required for a quality gaming experience there's no reason to remember it, except that it adds to the price of the console.

"nobody can say that the xbox isnt about gaming when you can play games on it, it just sounds either biased or backwards."

You wouldn't say a generic PC is "about gaming" when comparing it to a pure gaming PC would you?

Death4559d ago

What did Blu-ray do for gaming on the PS3? This gen Blu-ray will allow for more games to be in native 1080p without the need for multiple discs. We are still installing to the HDD for Blu-ray games, we just don't need a separate disc for it. Is Resogun or the highest rated PS4 game, Flower better because of Blu-ray? http://www.metacritic.com/b...

Kinect offers developers the opportunity to change the way we interact with games. Has it done anything a week after launch to justify it's inclusion? Not really. Does it have more potential than Blu-ray? Absolutely. Can we make an informed decision on it's value to the system today? Not at all. At the end of this generation we will know how or if it impacted gaming at all. Today the only reason to complain about it is because it has the potential to do more for gaming than the PS4 can. That is the only reason PS4 fans complain. Nothing they can do this gen can compensate if it does what Microsoft hopes it will.

pyramidshead4558d ago

lol this is the first time I've ever seen a comment showing a user talking to himself.

How peculiar.

solar4559d ago

MS paid IGN to review it lower.

Loki864559d ago (Edited 4559d ago )

@Enemy - Is this comment actually needed, who review a console a week after it comes out, that is not even close to enough time to make a proper decision, but this kind of trolling is not needed. Along with the rest of this talk in here, such a pathetic community.

No actually my stance has been since the first Xbox was released is let the consoles mature, then halfway through the cycle review the consoles as a whole.

Enemy4559d ago

Were you saying that when the PS4 was reviewed days before it even came out?

XboxPS4559d ago

You are one of the examples that If you're praising Sony and hating Xbox,It gives you more bubbles.
You are trying too much to make the Xbox look bad,That you don't care about PS4.

XboxPS4559d ago

Come on,give me those disagrees and bubble votes,I like it!

Snookies124559d ago

I don't hate on Xbox, still have my original and have owned two 360's. I have plenty of bubbles though...

On topic though, I'll probably pick up an X1 in the future. At the moment I'd want a PS4 first. My buddy has an X1, so if I really want to play anything on it I can go over to his place. Either way, there are still a lot of good titles coming out for last gen. So I'm pretty content without the new consoles (for right now). I know that'll change once some must have games start coming out though lol.

malokevi4559d ago

Great review. I agree with him on basically every point. Loving my console. Like him, for me, theres no going back to the old way of doing things. Xbox and Kinect run the living room, and I couldn't be happier.

Basically it screams "NOT FOR GAMING".

I expected more from this review.

-Foxtrot4559d ago

"Snap multitasking"

I thought it's been proving the snap stuff doesn't work as well as it was made out to be.

"Xbox One is a gaming console with exciting living room innovations, but it needs refinement"

Obviously not if every good point you gave the review in the end was NOT gaming related.

AgitatedOcelot4559d ago

Of course it sucks. It's the same as Windows 8 "metro" and it's awful multitasking.

It's funny because everything on the Xbox One works about as well as I expected. That is to say it's laggy, and the voice features are very limited and you have to shout at the thing and sound like an idiot.

I watched that presentation video they did of the UI that everyone raved over and thought, yeah, that's a load of bullshit. And it was, and noone is really even saying much about that.

H0RSE4559d ago (Edited 4559d ago )

You are speaking in terms of facts, but what you say actually aren't...

- you don't have to shout at the Kinect - you can just speak at a normal voice. Of course, people have different speaking volumes, as well as enunciate words differently, as well as having the Kinect at different distances from them - results will vary.

- I can't really comment on the voice features, because I don't actually know what all the commands are. I do know that the commands I use, "xox on" "xbox, record that, " "xbox snap/unsnap." work the first time 9 times out of 10. The one command I have found that it will not recognize is "xbox off." Whenever I say it, it thinks I'm saying "xbox pause."

- I have found nothing laggy about the UI. The UI is actually something I was impressed with. I have found that games sometimes crash to the dash, and their were problems with enabling chat in parties, but that was only on the first day. This is launch time, I expect a plethora of patches to be released for both consoles. For those who own a 360, compare the dash and features at launch to what we have now...

The experience you are describing is just that - your experience. Everyone is not having the same experience/issues as you, so don't speak as though they are irrefutable facts.

dansdooz4559d ago

ha ha ha awful multi taskin?! xbox one is incredible in this regard, the machine might not push as many pixels as the ps4 but trust me the experience is amazing.
Xbox one is much bigger than just gaming this device has the potential to change entertainment in the living room period.
Did you read apple just bought the tech behind kinect 1, yes thats apple...makes you think doesnt it...

Volkama4559d ago (Edited 4559d ago )

@Horse "XBox Off" will never work. "XBox turn off" will :)

Other less obvious one I use a lot is "XBox Select", it changes potential selections green and seems to be very effective in listing for a game/app title at that point too.

Loki864559d ago

Snap works perfectly for me and has already had huge benefits for when I am gaming and voice commands work very well despite these reviews that apparently can't talk like normal people. So I'll enjoy my true next-gen console while you play games with better graphics, which I can do far better on my PC.

Rainstorm814559d ago

The irony in this comment....aren't consolez for games the next gen features the x1 offers aren't gaming related, more competing with what tv or cable boxes feature set.

In the end its a glorified tv remote with a camera.

Id preferred a strong push toward features that would change gaming, like XBL did before on Xbox and 360, Not futuristic PIP (picture in picture).. also can't you do everything the x1 does on ur pc also?

Loki864559d ago

No actually you can't do most things the X1 can do on your PC, also has alot of gaming related evolutions with alot of room for grow. You don't even have the console I wouldn't expect you have a rational argument so I'll just say you are wrong.

liquidhalos4559d ago

Wait so lets break down what your saying. You will enjoy the true next gen gaming experience by getting an xbox. Okay fair enough, then you go and add - that the ps4 is superior in terms of graphics but if you want to match it you will play on pc....... So why have a next gen console if like you admit if you want good looking games you need to play on pc?

Tell you what, get a job and actually invest in next gen system, dont start silly troll wars because your bored and want in.

moparful994558d ago

What I find funny is all of these people raving about the multimedia functions of the X1 calling it the future and true next gen experience but these same people bashed the PS3 and its myriad of multimedia capabilities..

Blu ray, memory card readers, media server functionality, custom os etc were downplayed by the xbox elitists and now that the PS4 is the pure gaming device and the X1 has all of these unproven multimedia functions these same elitists are goin on about how its the true next gen experience.. So sick of people moving the goal posts to justify their console allegiance...

its the same critic score - ps4
ps4 dont have games now, and xbox one dont have stream now, its ok lol

TKCMuzzer4559d ago

The simple reason for it getting a lower score is because out of the box and for the price it's not as good as the PS4, you pay more money but the value can not be seen and that's because it just not there.
Plus why do people still think the Xbox one has the better games at the moment, many reviews are mixed on both consoles.

ic3fir34559d ago

yess true, im buy both, but ps4 im buy november 2014, because the order and uncharted 4, xbox one now, its better, because better line up, and- titanfall, sunset overdrive, fable legends, halo 5, quantum break, D4,below its all 2014 games, ps4 its rentable later much more later

LordDhampire4559d ago

@ic3fir3, your post can't be taken seriously...all you are doing is labeling games coming out for the xbox not games you are interested in....

We Are Xbox

Dear team,

Xbox has always been different.

We started with a simple idea. Games should bring people together through shared experiences. That led to the first Xbox in 2001, Xbox Live in 2002, and new ways to connect, from friends lists and achievements to parties and play across devices. Today, Xbox reaches over 500 million players around the world, with some of the most important franchises in entertainment.

If they go back to exclusive games it at least shows that they are finally getting it. They would be turning down immediate money for something that will potentially workout in the long term.

Only issue is they've already opened Pandora's box. A lot of their base has moved to PC or jumped to PS. So will be a long road to get back on track.

We have been saying this from day one exclusives are a must if you are going to be selling hardware look at Nintendo and Sony before Jim Ryan. That's the proven formula. You had some that were deluded and blinded by loyalty accepting that multiplat was the future and that MS was merely getting ahead of where the industry was headed, but at least they can finally see the light and agree with what everyone has been saying for a decade+

pwnmaster300029d ago

True, blame it on the rabid fanboys. MS can do no wrong and spinner this multiplatform move. While the actual fans moved on.

I feel like with the new Xbox coming they are hoping to bring back those old fans and then if it goes well. Bring back exclusives.

If the new console is performing like series x and one. Naw they staying multiplatform.

darthv7229d ago

Actual fans dont move on... they can add to their hobby while waiting for the next new release. If you believe what you typed then I guess PS fans moved on too.... you know, since its been a Sahara for 1st party games this gen.

S2Killinit29d ago

The fans didn’t tell them to go multilat. MS was forced to after the 82 billion they spent to destroy gaming. Then, while xbox fans cheered, MS realized they can’t justify the price tag by selling through xbox only, so they went multiplat and in the process began to downplay console gaming.

29d ago Replies(4)
CrashMania29d ago

I think it's too late, xbox sales were diving even before ABK, they got even worse since then even long before the full multiplatform push. I'd be surprised if they even went back to timed exclusivity at this point, Helix is basically a PC and is going to be expensive, they already struggle to sell cheaper xbox consoles, it will be low volume and they'll have a very small 'console' base to sell to, which has already been conditioned to just play via gamepass anyway.

S2Killinit29d ago

They will do what they always do, they will promise the world at the beginning of next GEN and then failed to deliver all generation long. But there will always be some gamers who will buy into their promises.

ocelot0729d ago

Absolutely agree, Do people genuinely believe Microsoft are now going to go. Hang on how's about we go back to 2020. Then GP was stagnating, Games sold where awful because of GP. Outsold by Playstation by a landslide.

They have sold 5m of Forza I believe on PS5. Spite it being a old game. I think Starfield is going to sell well in the end. Halo is deffinetly going to sell well as is Fable and Forza Horizon 6.

I think at best (for Xbox fans). Single player titles like Clockwork will have a timed exclusivity. Multiplayer centric games like Forza, E Day will release day and date on all platforms.

Or all games will release on all platforms day and date. But maybe Xbox and Windows Store copies will have exclusive bonuses. Or may even get timed exclusive dlc like Fallout and Elder Scrolls and COD use to do.

I think they will treat Xbox players like the premium customers or at least act the way. But will serve just the Playstation and Switch 2 customers as well.

Neonridr29d ago

I don't see them removing PC from the equation. Considering MS has a heavy enough investment in the PC market, it would be foolish to abandon them. I could see them taking away games from PlayStation or ensuring they are timed exclusives at the very least. Say what you will but if Call of Duty ends up becoming a timed exclusive to Xbox machines, that would hurt PlayStation, don't pretend like those games don't sell millions.

Outside_ofthe_Box29d ago

They would lose out on a lot of CoD sales tho. Doesn't PS make up most of the sales?

Neonridr29d ago

@Outside - possibly, but it might push people to want Xbox hardware so they can play with their buddies day one.

Who knows.

S2Killinit29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

it would but remember doing that can splinter the COD fan base and in the process damage the call of duty brand which is probably the only franchise in that $82 billion purchase that in anyway gets even close to delivering what Microsoft thought they bought. If Microsoft fudges around too much with the COD franchise, you might even see a competitor franchise show up on the scene and that would be a catastrophe after the huge debt that Microsoft put itself into with the ABK purchase.

But Its almost guaranteed that Microsoft will want to do something drastic at the beginning of the next generation as they always do. We will see.

Pyrofire9529d ago

Their lifeline of solely the Xbox consoles is dry. Good-Great games on a 1st party scale can't be made at a loss so willingly - sent to the Xbox to only sell limited copies.
They invested billions scooping up studios and need to start making returns.
Sucks that nearly every company is publicly traded and have to be so shareholder biased but that's how it is.
Their words are strong but it'll take time to see what their actions accomplish. Lowering the cost of Game Pass and taking CoD off of it was a good clear start.

darthv7229d ago

More like, allot of their base just played game pass. So now they need to encourage them to start buying again.

S2Killinit29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

A lot of their base left for greener (bluer?) pastures.

--Onilink--29d ago

What exactly is the long term goal with exclusives though?

Because for the most part, the hardware side of things has never been the most profitable, even sometimes being subsidized for a period before breaking even. And that’s before the hardware component nightmare we currently live in.

The whole point of exclusives was to get more people to buy your console in order to have a bigger install base, which meant even bigger software sales.

But if their ports to PS5 are selling (for the most part it seems) quite well, then other than negating the cut Sony takes there, unless you are REALLY increasing your software sales on your own console, it probably doesn’t make that much of a difference?

Honestly I don’t even understand Sony’s decision to scale back on it for PC unless they weren’t even recouping the port expenses. They released ports when the hardware sales never really dropped, and now that all consoles will undoubtedly take a noticeable drop in sales due to the ridiculous prices, that’s when they decide they don’t want to sell to a larger install base to more easily recoup dev costs… it’s just weird

Outside_ofthe_Box29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

I agree. I mean once they went multiplat, in theory there should be no going back especially when you have games that have sold really well on other platforms.

Microsoft are the ones that announced that they are reevaluating. So I'm just guessing on what their end goal is. Right now Xbox as a hardware is not a must buy for anyone but fans of the brand because their games can be played elsewhere. Going exclusive would solve this, but you lose out on a ton of money instantly which has always been what the company does not want to do so not really sure what their "reevaluating exclusives" means unless they are pulling a Phil Spencer and are just saying what people want to hear and will continue to do what they are currently doing.

darthv7229d ago

Their ports to PS5 are selling because Sony's output has been so dry... the fans are thirsty, and MS is the oasis.

SIdepocket29d ago

Unfortunately, the studios they buy wither under their leadership.

mcstorm29d ago

Microsoft still has a name with Xbox the issue is the casual games are not looking at the console because its not the same console their friends have. Look at that poll on how many users upgraded from xbox 365 to one and then the X. Part of Microsoft's downfall was thinking that the Wii was the market they had to be in when really it was the core market. If you get the core gamers you then get the market to. As I posted a few minuets ago on another post Microsoft putting exclusives on PS this gen could bold well if they hit next gen with all our games are staying exclusive from this new gen. They will then get gamers wanting Halo, Forza Gears but this is also where Microsoft fell over with the xbox one and X in terms of they did not have may quality 1st party games affter they fell into the Gears, Forza and Halo cycle. If they can get some old IPs back to bring back the old core gamers as well as fresh ips to bring in new gamers things could improve next gen. But as I said in my last post its all if buts and maybes at the moment. No one knows if the next home consoles will be to expensive that people move to pc as we are now seeing or look at the stem deck as a cheepier alternitive.

DarXyde29d ago

"Only issue is they've already opened Pandora's box."

That's very optimistic. It's not the only issue, far from it. There is a serious rupture between Microsoft generally and the public caused by their weird Game Pass price fluctuations, taking down physical game space in stores, and being the first to go nuts on hardware price hikes that they themselves played a big part in.

They're also charging beyond a premium for Helix which is just vile at a time when the economy is in shambles.

The company itself is really not doing itself any favors with the approach they're taking Windows. Even France is looking to ditch Windows in favor of Linux.

But the most offensive thing is this AI push. They're doubling, tripling, and quadrupling down on the very technology they're using to replace a considerable proportion of their workforce... And the slap in the face is how they bake copilot into everything when nobody likes it—they couldn't even make Bing stick, so why on earth are they trying so hard? You know it's bad when people would rather use ChatGPT than Copilot which is killing their OS. But aside from their snatching up of farmland to build data centers (and reduce the agriculture capacity of whichever country allows them to build them), they made an AI-generated gamer gurl that loves AI the head of Xbox.

Even if we grant them the full benefit of the doubt, it hardly matters what Xbox wants to do if Nadella says no, and that includes exclusive games. Microsoft's relationship with Xbox is the opposite of Sony's relationship with PlayStation—Microsoft pulls the reins of Xbox, but Sony damn near went under for the PS3.

“If they go back to exclusive games it at least shows that they are finally getting it.”

Great strategy, especially after Forza selling 5 million on PlayStation and sea of thieves selling at least another million (2 million) for example. In March 2026, Xbox consoles sales ratio vs PS was 10:1.

In addition to that, with Gamepass, which unequivocally cuts out chunks of sales (Cannibalizing revenue from 1st month sales especially).

I’m sure going exclusive again after releasing everything on Ps5 is going to work out great for business.

Despite all of that, it's clear that Microsoft's Xbox division is broken beyond repair.

PlayStation is currently draining money on flop after flop. It's Sony that needs to re-evaluate their strategy

Wonder how much money was lost on perfect dark, hellbalde 2, 300 million lost revenue
by putting cod on gamepass. The recent Jason schrier news that Xbox has cancelled dozens of projects, spent 70 billion just to see Xbox sales further collapse and gamepass see little growth.

The fact is this has been PlayStation's most profitable generation and they are making loads of money and selling plenty of consoles and games. While MS won't give you any sales figures or profit numbers for Xbox, says it all really.

"Our presence on PC isn’t strong enough."

Fishy Fingers29d ago

It isnt. But I dont think they mean in 'games', rather, footprint.

They own the OS but as far as gaming is concerned, Steam dominate. I imagine the VAST majority of people who use the Xbox app/launcher are PC gamepass subs. No ones buying their 3rd party PC games through Xbox PC.

and many gamers prefer SteamOS for gaming over Windows too. If only Valve would be more uncompromising to the anti-cheat makers that locked out non-windows players, more pc gamers would have moved onto SteamOS by now and not looking back to Windows. overall, Win11 is a terrible, bloated, unoptimized OS which is not what many people want

Agreed and I think that's where they are going to focus on more. I think cheaper games on Windows/Xbox store (MS IP) compared to Steam and Epic and maybe even compared to PSN store as well.
