Gamesradar:Mercs 2 Better looking on PS3?

Gamesradar reports:

''The world is going GTA IV crazy - and quite rightly so - but we've also been catching up with another anticipated open-world action game, Mercenaries 2. Developer Pandemic were on hand at a recent EA event, with senior producer Jonathan Zamkoff ready to update us on the Venezuelan bang-fest.
But it sounds like PS3 might actually get the better looking version in the end. Zamkoff reckons that PlayStation 3 is better than Xbox 360 at anti-aliasing, which suggests to us that Sony's version will be a sharper and perhaps more pleasing visual experience. We'll have to wait until our own eyes see the evidence to get excited, but it's interesting nonetheless.''

Seems the tables are really beginning to change in favour of the PS3.

Fishy Fingers6593d ago (Edited 6593d ago )

Well developers have had plenty of time to get their heads around the systems architecture. No more excuse's.

bumnut6593d ago

good job i own both consoles.

thewhoopimen6593d ago

Very Interesting considering how many developers last year came out with PS3 games that had no Anti-alising at all. Where did the transition happen?

Vip3r6593d ago

I noticed that too. I was surprised to hear it in GTA4 and I thought the 360 would have been better at it because it had 10mb of special memory for it.

SUP3R6593d ago

And so it begins.
If you didn't see it coming, your eyes were closed.

SIX6593d ago

I found this very interesting as well. My 360 games always look smoother around the edges which makes the games look more solid and CG like. It looks like Sony wasn't kidding when they said that they would be helping developers get the most out of there system. Exciting times.

sonarus6593d ago

lol just one game looks better on ps3 and now every game wants to start looking better on ps3.

I am honestly surprised that the ps3 is better at AA than 360. I remember reading one of those random things where they break down the ps3 graphics chip and 360 graphics chip and they said 360 chip has the edge in AA

ion6666593d ago

sell your xboxs because if u preordered gta on that system beware of the u know what, alot of people r going to be pissed

Homicide6593d ago

Just as Homicide suspected, the PS3 version is superior.

games but there finally getting a handle with the hardware. . . lol

mistertwoturbo6593d ago

LOL that's actually pretty funny and actually made me laugh out loud in real life. I just looked like a crazy person in front of my girlfriend

anyway, I agree EA has no more excuses

nutjuice6593d ago

and none of the 20 were really any good. But they have some nice ones coming out now, but it seems PS3 is the version to get all of a sudden. Maybe Peter Moore knows something about the future of the 360 that MS won't let its fans hear?

ThaGeNeCySt6593d ago

what happened to that 8 mb ED-Ram (sp?) in the GPU that would allow for free and easy AA at no cost?

PirateThom6593d ago

I'm guessing as the games become more complex, they're having to use that for raw processing rather than AA.

Fishy Fingers6593d ago

Yeah I agree with Pirate, they will program it to use very last drop of power, they wont leave 8mb spare for AA later.

And lets be fair, 8mb can't really make much difference.

omegaheat6593d ago

That's the reason I know that this is definitely a load of crap. And let's make a correction; GTAIV does not have better anti aliasing in the PS3 version. The developers had to use some kind of filter blur in the PS3 version because the PS3 has problems with aliasing. It's nothing new. I think Sony's trying way too hard to one up Microsoft everytime there's a big title release. It's becoming quite obvious now and not to mention pathetic.

Fishy Fingers6593d ago (Edited 6593d ago )

Umm what does Sony have to do with reviewers claiming the PS3 looks better in GTA or Pandemic saying Mercs has more AA on the PS3?

EDIT: Oooh lots of disagrees, seem you guys know something I don't. Shame you wont share huh.

VaeVictus6593d ago

b/c reviewers seems to think the AA is better on the PS3. You have inside info? Link please?

leeger6593d ago

yeah yeah yeah keep telling that to yourself. Whatever makes you happy.

jollygoodchap86593d ago

How do you sleep at night?

Good, I'm guessing...Why do I think that? Because of that of old saying...

Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Mu5afir6593d ago (Edited 6593d ago )

Once you have a game at 640p / and MSAA the EDRAM is useless as it doesn't have enough memory to process the sample data. The DATA transfer rate to the GPU is very limited, so even if EDRAM could AA the samples, it can't process them fast enough to do any good.

The AA was actually made for standard def games, until Sony came into the picture and Microsoft decided to market their standard def system as a HD gaming platform. Fact is the X360 wasn't designed for HD gaming.

DJ6593d ago

Is very small, and only capable of handling 480p resolution with 4x Anti-aliasing (bare minimum for clean edges), or approximately 680p with 2x Anti-aliasing (which doesn't do much).

While ED-RAM is very expensive, had they put in 30MB of ED-RAM the 360 would've been capable of doing 4x Anti-aliasing at 1080p resolution, no problem. As it stands though, if a developers wants to do 720p resolution with 4x Anti-aliasing, the frame has to be chopped into multiple parts before being sent in to the ED-RAM for anti-aliasing. And then sent back into system memory to be pieced back together and have post-processing filters applied.

RSX simply does all that within GDDR3 memory, and has twice the bandwidth to handle it. The ED-RAM was a great idea since the PS2 proved how useful it could be, but ATI/Microsoft really did skimp on the financial investment. They could've had a real big edge over nVidia/Sony in that regard.

sonarus6593d ago

Yea when MSoft came in with the X360 they were targeting the PS2 but they have still managed to hold off against the PS3. Seriously speaking everyday it seems like value of the PS3 is increasing and the value of the 360 is decreasing...where is that price drop

Varsarus6593d ago

Again, nice post :P

I heard on a forum, that the 360's UMA shared RAM is just slow as hell, and in order to operate it you must have EDRAM?

I cant agree with a lot of games on this list. Far, far more deserving entries - which I wont go into now. All I will say is Blast Corps U...I can dream, cant I?

I_am_Batman4169d ago

The Darkness games are among my favorite games of last gen. Both were very unique in their own ways. I'd love to see a third iteration though I doubt it'll happen.

Folklore 2 would be nice as well.

idlet4169d ago

Folklore was great! Great mechanics and atmosphere. Shame it never got too much notice

I_am_Batman4169d ago

Yeah. If I hadn't played the demo I would've probably missed out on it as well.

Helloween134169d ago

Well apart from Jak and Daxter the rest are total crap and I for 1 are glad there was no more of that crap, now if you want to talk about Heavenly sword and Medievil now thats 2 that should have another go at this gen

TomLovesXBOX4169d ago

Legend of Dragoon. That is all that needs to be said.
