GTA IV Technical Q&A

GTAGaming.com writes:

One of our members, PHiLCORE, has posted a very informative Q&A for GTA IV concerning technical limitations and features as well as some extra bits of information.

Something that stood out was that if you're not liking the sound of the new control scheme from what you've heard so far, you can switch to the classic control scheme by pausing the game and scrolling to Controls and toggling Classic Mode on.

Read the GTA IV Technical Q&A. Thanks, Phil!

This is a nice run down more developers should do this. Granted it's already available via the booklet but still wouldn't hurt.

Oh yeah and for those who claim that the Xbox360 version runs at a higher res.

"Xbox 360
1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480iPAL 50 and PAL 60 are supported

PS3
1080p, 720p, 576p (16:9 wide screen), 576i, 480p (16:9 wide screen),480iOnly PAL 60 is supported"

Both out max at 1080p yet the end result is,.. well we all know which looks better and if not am sure my friend sammy mantra will have no problem telling you. So i know many claim the Xbox360 runs at a higher res but clearly it is not so.

Varsarus6594d ago

I believe they both upscale from 720p

However

I just read this quote

"Note: to enable 1080p on the PS3 the user must select custom under display settings on the PS3 dashboard and only tick the 1080p box. This will force the game to boot in 1080p. If the display settings are set to automatic the game will boot in 720p, NOT in 1080p."

hmm, although I can't be sure.

GAMESRADAR,IGN,GT and EGM said the same DAMN thing

However Swedish gaming mag Gamereactor said that there are MAJOR DIFFERENCES between the 2 version

http://www.gamereactor.se/r...

Swedish Gamereactor mentioned in their 10/10 review that they were pretty surprised regarding the difference between the PS3 and 360-versions. The PS3-version features better colours, contrast, load times and what looks to be better resolution textures. The game also looks sharper and has a more stable fps.

IGN

http://www.n4g.com/NewsCom-...

"For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster. Don't worry Xbox owners, the load times are rarely more than 30 seconds and don't occur very often. The slight visual edge goes to PS3, but the 360 is no slouch. Either version will do you proud".

X360 version has FR dips too . more frequent than the PS3 version
"Past GTA titles have had mild-to-serious framerate issues and technical glitches, because the games were trying to do far more than the PlayStation 2 could handle. While GTA IV is pushing the PS3 and 360 to the limit, it also runs amazingly well. Sure, there are framerate hitches here and there and (particularly on 360) there is some texture pop-in, but it actually runs better than I expected. That a game with great AI, an awesome physics engine and a detailed open world runs so well and with such short load times is a technical marvel. For that, I can forgive framerate issues and some noticeable aliasing. "

http://www.n4g.com/NewsPend...

"PS3 version looks slightly more vibrant and sharp "

GAMESRADAR

http://www.gamesradar.com/x...

"Occasional pop-up".........ONLY in X360 version

So happy that i own a PS3

GAMESRADAR also confirms that PS3 version is SUPERIOR

"While the PS3 and 360 versions of the game are functionally identical, the PS3's visuals sport noticeably smoother edges, along with a warmer color palette that makes everything look slightly more realistic. If you're looking to compare Accomplishments with your Achievement-hoarding friends, though, forget it - GTA IV ignores these half-assed consolation prizes altogether. PS3 owners also have to put up with a nearly eight-minute installation the first time they start the game, which puts the normally slower Blu-ray load times on par with the Xbox 360 version. (That is, unless it's running on a 360 with no hard drive, which we're told will face much longer loads.)"

It is OVER for XBUTTS and 3 FIX ME

PS3 version has better COLOURS

MORE REALISTIC LOOK

NO FR DIPS

LESS POP INS

LESS LOADING TIMES

(loading times on arcade takes over a minute!!! what a shame)

HIGH REZ TEXTURES

MORE POLY PER CHAR

Jamaicangmr6594d ago

Am no resolution expert but i really doubt that they are being upscaled. Well not the PS3 since you have the option to select 1080p in the display settings. It's not much of a big deal to me if it is really but am just saying based on that i doubt it is upscaled on the PS3.

Premonition6594d ago

@Varsarus , I think what they are saying is, if your TV only does 720p it would be upscaled to 1080p but wont really be 1080p but if your tv does all 3 480p, 720 and 1080p and you set it to only 1080p it will do 1080p.

Varsarus6594d ago

@Jamaicangmr

Agreed, imo, the 360 should stay upscaled to 1080p, seeing as it has frame rate issues and such, however, I don't think there should really be a problem with the PS3 version to go 1080p, but I could see a drop in frame rates, but someone did exactly the same with COD4, and said there were absolutely no frame rate drops, so hopefully, the PS3 version can pull it off.

@Premonition

I actually thought of that for a second lol, but that's nice to know :D

aiphanes6594d ago

What HD resolutions does the game support (PS3/XB360)?

Xbox 360
1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i
PAL 50 and PAL 60 are supported

PS3
1080p, 720p, 576p (16:9 wide screen), 576i, 480p (16:9 wide screen), 480i
Only PAL 60 is supported

Note: to enable 1080p on the PS3 the user must select custom under display settings on the PS3 dashboard and only tick the 1080p box. This will force the game to boot in 1080p. If the display settings are set to automatic the game will boot in 720p, NOT in 1080p.

aiphanes6594d ago (Edited 6594d ago )

They show all the settings and features of both versions of GTA4..

Why cant I use the original PS2 car controls or I don't like the current control scheme.

Pause the game > Controls > Classic mode - toggle this option.

Where can I access the SIXAXIS menu?

It is located in the pause menu > Controls > selecting SIXAXIS brings up a submenu which allows the player to enable motion controls for various actions.

How do the SIXAXIS features on the PS3 controller work?

When in a helicopter you can control the pitch and roll of the craft.
When on a bike you can use pitch and roll to pull of wheelies and stoppies as well as leaning.
When on a boat you use it to steer and control the trim of the engines.
When in a vehicle you can use the pitch and roll to control the orientation of the vehicle when in mid-air.
When using weapons you can use it to quickly reload by pitching the controller up and down in quick succession

The game is too bright / the colours are washed out / there's too much glare.

Pause the game > display options once in the sub menu you will need to turn the saturation to it's lowest level and adjust the brightness and contrast to the desired level before readjusting the saturation level to the required level.

How much HDD space will the PS3 version take up?

3500mb

Notice from this Q and A the Xbox 360 version does not install on the harddrive. This is probably why the PS3 version has better load times. Somebody confirm this..

Peeps, I believe there is no upscalling in the PS3 version of this game...if it was it would support 1080i...it does support 1080p...so do we really know the reviews new this and set it to go 1080p instead of 720p? The Xbox 360 version could also be upscalled to 1080p....or even native....somebody will have to do some pixel counts...

Its going to be very interesting in the next few weeks.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies751d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken751d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing69752d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker752d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo752d ago (Edited 752d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing69752d ago (Edited 752d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos752d ago (Edited 752d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt751d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken751d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
